www.billboard.com/articles/news/6244197/maroon-5-tops-billboard-200-with-vMaroon 5 Tops Billboard 200 With 'V'By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | September 10, 2014 Jeezy starts at No. 2 on the chart, while Bob Marley earns his highest-charting album ever. Pop band Maroon 5 nabs its second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as its fifth studio release -- appropriately named V -- debuts atop the list. It sold 164,000 copies in the week ending Sept. 7, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The 164,000 start is a drop-off from the arrival of the group's last album, 2012's Overexposed, which launched with 222,000 at No. 2. However, V's bow is bigger than of the album that came before Overexposed -- 2010's Hands All Over, which debuted at No. 2 with 142,000. Maroon 5 topped the chart once previously, with their second album, 2007's It Won't Be Soon Before Long. That release continues to hold the group's personal best sales week, when the album shifted 429,000 in its debut frame. It Won't Be Soon Before Long followed the group's breakthrough debut album, Songs About Jane, which peaked at No. 6 in 2004 and spent 122 weeks on the chart. Rapper Jeezy follows Maroon 5 on the new chart, as his latest effort, Seen It All: The Autobiography, arrives at No. 2 with 121,000. He also enters at No. 1 on both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and Rap Albums chart. Jeezy's last album, 2012's T M: 103 Hustlerz Ambition (credited to Young Jeezy), debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, selling 233,000 copies in its first week. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack rises one rung to No. 3 on the latest Billboard 200, selling 53,000 copies (up 10 percent). Its cumulative sales rise to 426,000. Last week's No. 1 album, Ariana Grande's My Everything, slides to No. 4 in its second week, selling 42,000 (down 75 percent). Next up on the chart, reggae legend Bob Marley claims his highest charting album ever, as his greatest hits set Legend (with his band the Wailers) jumps from No. 100 to No. 5 ( 41,000; up 1,166 percent). The set's big gain is owed to the Google Play store discounting the title to 99-cents during the tracking week. The digital album normally sells for around $8. Legend was released in 1984, and had previously gone as high as No. 18 in 2012. Marley has visited the top 10 once before, with 1976's Rastaman Vibration, which peaked at No. 8 on the July 4, 1976-dated chart. Following Marley is rock band Counting Crows with the debut of Somewhere Under Wonderland, bowing at No. 6 with 32,000. It's the group's sixth top 10 album, and first since 2008's Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings debuted and peaked at No. 3. Closing out the second half of the top 10 is the soundtrack to Frozen (holding at No. 7 with 30,000; up 11 percent), Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour (5-8 with just under 30,000; down 4 percent), the Now 51 compilation (8-9 with 28,000; up 10 percent) and Wiz Khalifa's Blacc Hollywood (6-10 with 20,000; down 34 percent). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" regains the No. 1 slot, rising one rung, selling 312,000 downloads (up 17 percent). Last week's leader, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," dips to No. 2 with 281,000 (down 21 percent) in its third chart week. "Shake" has now sold 1.2 million downloads. Jessi J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj's "Bang Bang" is steady at No. 3 with 170,000 (down 30 percent) and Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow," featuring Rita Ora, rises 5-4 with 143,000 (down 24 percent). Minaj's "Anaconda" descends 4-5 with 130,000 (down 31 percent), Grande's "Break Free," featuring Zedd, jumps 8-6 with 95,000 (down 20 percent) and Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" is stationary at No. 7 with 84,000 (down 33 percent). Clean Bandit's "Rather Be," featuring Jess Glynne, returns to the top 10 after a week away, rising 12-8 with 82,000 (down 4 percent). MAGIC!'s "Rude" zips 17-9 with 81,000 (up 21 percent) and Sia's "Chandelier" swings back into the top 10, climbing 11-10 with 79,000 (down 12 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 7) totaled 4.13 million units, down 1 percent compared with the sum last week (4.18 million) and down 18 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.06 million). Year to date album sales stand at 162.79 million, down 15 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (190.95 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 19.13 million downloads, down 6 percent compared with last week (20.27 million) and down 14 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (22.33 million). Year to date track sales are at 793.75 million, down 13 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (910.33 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Keith Urban's Fuse debuted at No. 1, selling 98,000 copies. The Weeknd's Kissland started in the No. 2 slot with 95,000.

The Frozen special last week wasn't a big ratings winner, but the album did see a decent-enough gain.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-10-legend-ary-facts-about-marleys-171628414.html A 'Legend'-ary Rebound: Bob Marley's Classic Album Enters Top 10, Three Decades After Its ReleaseBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch Thirty years after it was released, Bob Marley & the Wailers's Legend finally cracked the top 10 on the Billboard 200. The compilation, the one reggae album that everybody knows, vaulted from No. 100 to No. 5, selling 41,000 copies. The reason for the surge? The album was discounted to just 99 cents in the Google Play store. That comes out to about six cents per song. (You could buy the entire digital album for 30 cents less than you would have had to pay for any one individual track!) On one hand, it's surprising that Legend has never before cracked the top 10, because greatest hits albums, especially by big-name artists, have a history of doing very well on the charts. On the other hand, it isn't really surprising. Unlike, say, Eagles or Journey, both of which had a long string of hits before releasing their greatest hits albums, Marley only became a big star in the U.S. with this album. There was little reason to think that Legend would become a blockbuster when it was released in the summer of 1984. Marley, who had died of cancer three years earlier, had not been a huge record seller in the U.S. Just two of his albums had reached the top 40. And he never had a top 40 single. Sure enough, Legend got off to a slow start. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 168 in August 1984. It was the sixth-highest of seven new entries that week, coming in below the latest releases by '80s faves Spandau Ballet and INXS and the little-remembered Y&T. Legend originally peaked at a middling No. 54 in October 1984. But it just never stopped selling. In honor Marley's album finally making the top 10, here are 10 facts you may not know about the classic album. 1. Legend has sold more copies since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan started tracking music sales, than any other album from the '60s, '70s, or '80s. It ranks ahead of such perennial hits as Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and Journey's Greatest Hits. The album's current sales tally (just since 1991, mind you): 11,642,000. 2. Legend and the Beatles's 1 are the only greatest hits sets or compilations to top the 10 million mark in sales since 1991. The Beatles's album, released in 2000, has sold 12.4 million copies. These compilations have sold more copies since 1991 than greatest hits albums by such top artists as Journey, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Eagles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Guns N' Roses. 3. Though Marley is a true music legend, Legend is just his second top 10 album. His first was Rastaman Vibration, which reached No. 8 in July 1976. Marley only this week pulls even with his son Damian Marley, who had a pair of top 10 albums in 2005 and 2010. 4. As an artist, Marley notched just one Hot 100 single, "Roots, Rock, Reggae," which hit No. 51 in 1976. But several of his songs were well-known by the time Legend came out. Johnny Nash took the sensuous "Stir It Up" to No. 12 in April 1973. Eric Clapton took "I Shot the Sheriff" to No. 1 in September 1974. Perhaps most famously, the Jamaica Tourist Board used "One Love" as an endlessly-aired commercial jingle to lure travelers to the island. 5. Other artists, especially in the hip-hop realm, have continued to have success with Marley's songs in the years since his death. Fugees included "No Woman, No Cry" on their No. 1 album The Score in 1996. Their remake made the top 40. Warren G had a top 20 hit with a 1997 update of "I Shot the Sheriff." 6. This marks the first time that an album has taken 30 years to finally crack the top 10 on the Billboard 200. Two albums have taken more than 10 years to finally crack the top 10. Phil Collins's 1998 compilation, …Hits, took nearly 14 years to finally hit the top 10. (Like Legend, it surged because of a 99 cent sale.) Avenged Sevenfold's 2003 album Waking the Fallen took more than 11 years to finally hit the top 10. It achieved the feat just last week due to the release of a deluxe reissue. 7. This marks the third time that an album by an artist who has been dead for more than 30 years has made the top 10 on the Billboard 200. The Beatles's 1 returned to the top 10 in September 2011, nearly 31 years after the death of John Lennon. Led Zeppelin's first three albums returned to the top 10 in June, nearly 34 years after the death of drummer John Bonham. 8. This is Legend's 293rd week on the Billboard 200. As impressive as that total is, it would be far higher were it not for a rule that kept older "catalog" albums off the big chart until 2009, when a much-needed rule change allowed catalog albums to compete alongside current albums. The album reached a new peak, No. 26, in June 2011, and another new peak, No. 18, in August 2012, before finally cracking the top 10 this week. 9. Legend rebounded from No. 7 to No. 1 in its 1,128th week on Top Catalog Albums. This is the album's 120th week at No. 1 on that chart since 1991. That's more weeks on top than any other album. In fact, it's more than the two runners-up combined. They are (of all things) Creed's My Own Prison, with 54 weeks at No. 1, and the Grease soundtrack, with 52 weeks on top. 10. Legend isn't the first catalog album to make the top 10 on the Billboard 200 after being discounted to just 99 cents by a digital retailer. In the space of four weeks in the summer of 2012, Phil Collins's aforementioned …Hits, Bee Gees's Number Ones and Frank Sinatra's Nothing but the Best all made the top 10 after being discounted to 99 cents in Amazon's MP3 store. In March of that year, Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits rebounded to No. 3, due to a 25-cent offer at Amazon MP3 and Google Play.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-maroon-5s-v-other-super-short-album-185046794.htmlChart Watch: Maroon 5's 'V' & Other Super-Short Album TitlesBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch You’ve probably heard that one-word song titles are becoming more popular, a reflection of our keep-it-short Twitter era. Along those same lines, we’re starting to see more one-character album titles. Maroon 5's V this week becomes the second album with a one-character title to reach #1 on The Billboard 200 in the past few months, following Ed Sheeran's x. This is the first year in which two albums with such super-short titles have hit #1. And a third album with a single-character title, Chris Brown's X, is vying for #1 two weeks from now. Over the years, four other albums with single-character titles have reached #1: Foreigner's 4 (1981), the Beatles's 1 (2000), Omarion's O (2005) and Beyonce's 4 (2011). V, which sold 164K copies in its first week, is Maroon 5’s second #1 album. The Los Angeles-based group first topped the chart in May 2007 with its sophomore album, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. Its last two albums, Hands All Over and Overexposed, both peaked at #2. The group’s debut album, Songs About Jane, never climbed higher than #6, but is by far the group’s best-seller. As of last week, it had sold 5,025,000 copies. Maroon 5 has now had as many #1 albums as Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine's fellow coach on The Voice. Of other past or present coaches on The Voice, Usher has had four #1 albums; Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani (as part of No Doubt) have each had one. Jeezy's Seen It All: The Autobiography, his fifth studio album through a major label, debuts at #2 (121K). All five of these albums have reached the top three. Two made #1: 2006’s The Inspiration and 2008’s The Recession. This is Jeezy’s first album since he dropped “Young” as part of his name. Jeezy will turn 37 on Sept. 28, so it was probably time. Jeezy isn’t the first act to drop Young as part of its name. The Young Rascals became The Rascals in April 1968, with the release of the hit single “Beautiful Mornin.’” This is Jeezy’s second name change. He went by the name Lil’ J on his 2001 album Thuggin’ Under The Influence (TUI). Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 rebounds from #4 to #3 in its sixth week (53K), aided by a $6.99 sale at iTunes. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the sixth week. The movie was #1 at the box-office for the fourth non-consecutive weekend. It’s the first movie to spend four weekends on top since The Hunger Games in the spring of 2012. Both movies were boosted by soundtracks that reached #1. Ariana Grande's My Everything drops from #1 to #4 in its second week (42K). I have some good news for Grande fans too: Her 2013 debut album Yours Truly tops the 500K mark in sales this week. Bob Marley & the Wailers's Legend vaults from #100 to #5 (41K) after being discounted to 99 cents in the Google Play store. I posted a separate blog about that this morning. If you missed it, here’s a link. Counting Crows's seventh studio album, Somewhere Under Wonderland, debuts at #6 (32K). It’s the group’s sixth top 10 album. The group’s 1993 debut album August And Everything After remains its best-seller, though its 1996 follow-up, Recovering The Satellites, is its only album to reach #1. The Frozen soundtrack holds at #7 for the second week in its 41st week (30K). The album has sold 3,387,000 copies. Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour drops from #5 to #8 in its 12th week (30K). The album returns to #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart. This is its third week on top in Smith’s home country. The album has climbed as high as #2 in the U.S. Now 51 dips from #8 to #9 in its fifth week (28K) … Wiz Khalifa's Blacc Hollywood drops from #6 to #10 in its third week (20K). Coming Attractions:Look for LaCrae's seventh studio album, Anomaly, and Jhene Aiko's debut album, Souled Out, to battle for #1 next week. Both are expected to sell in the 70K plus range. Also due: Ryan Adams's Ryan Adams (about 40K), Lee Brice's I Don’t Dance (40K), Dustin Lynch's Where It’s At (30K), Interpol's El Pintor (30K), Banks's Goddess (25K), Robert Plant’s Lullaby And…The Ceaseless Roar (24K), Vance Joy's Dream Your Life Away (21K) and Ritzz's Next To Nothing (21K).

From Billboard: Chart Moves
On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart, Maroon 5 nabbed its second chart-topping album as V debuted atop the list, selling 164,000 copies in the week ending Sept. 7 (according to Nielsen SoundScan). The group last topped the list in 2007 with It Won't Be Soon Before Long.
Of course, there was lots of action elsewhere on the chart. Let's take a closer look:
– Soundtrack, Guardians of the Galaxy - No. 3 – Combined, the soundtracks to Guardians of the Galaxy (426,000 sold this year) and Frozen (No. 7; 3 million) -- both former No. 1 albums -- comprise 39 percent of all soundtrack sales in 2014 (8.9 million). Unsurprisingly, both Frozen and Guardians of the Galaxy are also the No. 1 and 2 biggest selling soundtracks this year. Frozen and Guardians of the Galaxy were released by the Disney Music Group, on its Walt Disney Records and Marvel/Hollywood Records labels, respectively.
— Miranda Lambert, Platinum – No. 13 – Following sale pricing of the set down to $6.99 at both iTunes and Amazon MP3, the album vaults 34-13 with a 94 percent gain to 17,000 sold for the week. Lambert's Twitter and Facebook accounts also spread the good word about the promotion, no doubt driving sales.
— Johnny Winter, Step Back – No. 17 – The late blues guitarist not only claims his highest charting album ever, but also logs his third No. 1 on the Blues Albums chart, selling 12,000 copies. Nearly half (45 percent) of its first week was sold through Internet retailers.
— Thirty Seconds to Mars, Love Lust Faith + Dreams – No. 128 – The album re-enters the chart with a 109 percent gain, courtesy of sales generated along their concert tour stops in Michigan and Illinois. In total, the album has sold 186,000.
— Katy Perry, Teenage Dream – No. 152 – The pop diva's album dances its way back onto the list, with a 31 percent hike (up 64 percent in downloads) after iTunes discounted the title to $6.99 during the tracking frame.
— Blonde Redhead, Barragan – No. 180 – The band celebrates its 10th year on the Billboard charts with the debut of its new release, Barragan, selling 2,000. The act first appeared on the Billboard 200 dated April 10, 2004 with its Misery Is a Butterfly album.
— Various Artists, WOW Hits 2014 – No. 189 – The popular Christian and gospel compilation brand WOW -- which includes series like WOW Hits, WOW Gospel and WOW Worship -- has sold 26.2 million albums in the U.S., according to Nielsen Christian SoundScan. The WOW brand launched in 1995 and has notched 19 No. 1s on the Christian Albums chart and 17 No. 1s on the Gospel Albums chart.
