FYI I was not referring to Charli... But ARIANA GRANDE, ie already big in the young demo with her previous album, winning best new artist at the AMAs (voted by the public) and lots of followers. Fancy benefitted from Problem. Fergie, Gwen, Nelly, Shakira belong to a former class of divas replaced by the new crowd: Katy, Rihanna, Gaga, Taylor, Kesha, even Demi, Selena, etc. Black eyed peas was not Fergie and even if we stretch that, the last BEP era was not something to be too proud of. One hit, one medium sized hit, and flops is not that huge. Fergie's last big era was too long ago for the immediacy of pop music. An era that spanned 2 albums released within a year of each other that produced 3 #1s, a total of 7 Top 10 hits, over 20+ million in digital singles, and over 14 million in album sales wasn't an era to be proud of?! Also a headlining gig at the Super Bowl... ooookay. Also how did Fancy benefit from Problem? One was already a Top 5 hit and having massive spin gains and digital gains before the other song was even known. Fancy benefited from a great video that went viral, an SNL skit, Jimmy Fallon Lip-Synching to it and various other factors. Nice try :) I was not talking about the huge END era but The Beginning era (FYI that is another era). The Time was a slight disappointment compared to the previous huge era. Just Can't Get Enough saved the era but then Don't stop the party flopped badly. Also, the level of autotune practically made Fergie unrecognizable. In terms of Iggy, we can't underestimate the effects of Problem either. Already buzz online about Ariana's collaboration the week of April 14, the snippets released the week of April 21 and then the HUGE sales when it was released. Iggy first reached the top 3 of the hot 100 with Problem; Fancy's ascent into the top 10 was on April 30th. I'm not saying Problem was the only or even the main factor for Fancy's success, but it benefitted from the spotlight given to a widely popular artist from the core pop audience demo that was ready to break out, and who had the best weekly sales of a single with lots of advance buzz.

"Fancy" was a hit, period. "Problem" could have never existed and it still would have went #1. You act like Ariana Grande was some huge star, she had what, one (not mega) hit and a semi-hit album. Let's not try and get technical with dates and theories here. And to say Fergie is in the same boat as Iggy... no. People know who Fergie is, people know who BEP is. And most importantly, radio and radio programmers know who Fergie is because she's an established act. And they're the ones who play the records.
This song is off to a soft start because, quite frankly, it's not that good. There is no hype, no promotion, no push from her record label or herself. It was just kind of thrown out there.
If Fergie had come out of the gate with a hot first single, with the hype and promo that is usually afforded an artist of her stature, we'd be looking at a completely different scenario. It should have been played as "The Return Of Fergie." Instead, we got, "Oh yeah... that Fergie bitch is back..."

I definitely feel like kids know who Fergie is, all you have to do is mention either Fergie's name or The Black Eyed Peas and people automatically start talking about "Big Girls Don't Cry" or "Fergalicious" or "Glamorous" or even her BEP hits. They definitely know who she is.
She's not getting a lot of promotion for this, which imo, is the reason it's still relatively low on the charts...

People certainly know who Fergie is and her biggest hits were so outlandish and campy that they've almost become identifiers for that era so it's not even that her hits have been forgotten but still...does that mean anything now? I like the Ferg alright but to act like she is/was a major part of pop music history is a bit of a stretch imo. The Dutchess was a sales monster and she had a series of strong singles but it was not some seminal work of the time and I don't think Fergie has ever really been respected or admired for her craft, even for a pop artist.
I'd love to see her comeback and give us some London Bridge sleeze again but if she doesn't take off I won't be totally shocked. People barely took her seriously as a solo artist back then and now she's become lumped in with the BEP who have become more noted for releasing watered down generic factory hits than for their awesome early 2000s work. If she has some great current material, I could see her getting a hit but I really don't see the GP/radio opening their arms and welcoming her back like some lost sister if everything isn't completely on point.

Gwen song will flop after the radio deal tho.
This song will be the real hit of the two.
Top 10 after the video for sure.

If she has some great current material, I could see her getting a hit but I really don't see the GP/radio opening their arms and welcoming her back like some lost sister if everything isn't completely on point. This board has a long (and ongoing) history of over-crediting female artists. One of those that I've seen was that Fergie was the major reason for the BEP's success for all four of the album campaigns that she was a part of the BEP, which isn't true. For the first two, you can convincingly make that argument, especially for the second project. One of the reasons she was in such a great position going into her first solo project was that she was the focal point of the biggest hits of Monkey Business (Don't Phunk With My Heart and especially My Humps) placed her squarely as a frontwoman in the spotlight. There was no denying that she had emerged as the biggest star of the group, but that does not mean that that held afterwards. Their end of decade return signaled a shift, and not just musically. There was a definite conscious effort to equalize her and will.i.am, and it worked. Her profile went down enough and his went up enough to place them on equal footing pretty much everywhere that wasn't a gay club. Not only did it work too, it worked to massive success and anyone who denies that is...well, in denial for lack of a batter term. The BEP were able to successfully morph themselves into an act that could play the World Cup and The Superbowl and in the process, they also played a major part in reshaping the landscape of popular music. And once they wrapped up those concerts for The Beginning, she pretty much vanished while Will stayed around, he's probably a bigger celebrity now than her. Of the 5/6 (Imma Be was pretty much a US & Canadian hit only) hits they got off The E.N.D. and The Beginning, she was really present as the center only on one, Meet Me Halfway, which didn't do as outstandingly as some of the others stateside. I remember for pretty much every single release they had other than that here, there were floods of complaints on how she wasn't featured enough and sounded processed, and the songs would still go on to be big hits. Some people's vision of Fergie here is as dated as those shots from the video set. Once the BEP regrouped, she was pulled back from being the only focal point of the group to sharing it with Will. And at the same time, seeing as her vision seems to be stuck in the mid-00s, it's no wonder will.i.am downgraded her. And I'm not even saying this as a hater. My love for the BEP is well known here and I spun all four of the albums they did with her, along with her solo project, into the ground, but the writing's clearly on the wall here.

The Time was a "slight disappointment?" lol. It's one of the worst covers I've ever heard in my life.

I actually had no idea The Time did that well. I remember it as a pretty big flop in my head, but I guess that is maybe because of just how BIG the singles were from the previous album more than it being an actual flop.

It had a soft performance in the US for a lead single, especially after such a huge era. It peaked at #8 on CHR and didn't hang on very long. And after the Superbowl performance, it had the inevitable sales spike and reached it's peak position on the Hot 100 after it was done at radio.

#35 on iTunes, #71 on Amazon and finally in Googe Play's Top 100 (for what it's worth)... Slowly but surely it's making the climb.
