Lecrae Earns First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | September 17, 2014 11:00 AM EDT Rapper Lecrae collects his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as his new Anomaly opens atop the list. It sold 88,000 copies in the week ending Sept. 14, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's also the first chart-topper for Lecrae's label, Reach Records. Anomaly's launch is Lecrae's best sales week, trumping the 72,000-unit start of 2012's Gravity, which debuted and peaked at No. 3. (Gravity was also Lecrae's highest-charting album — and only top 10 — until Anomaly's arrival.) Anomaly is the Grammy winner's sixth No. 1 on the Gospel Albums chart and his fifth leader on Christian Albums. (Most Christian hip-hop releases are eligible to appear on both sales charts.) Thus, Anomaly is the first title to crown both Gospel Albums and the Billboard 200, and just the fifth set to lead both Christian Albums and the Billboard 200. In terms of the latter achievement, it follows Chris Tomlin's Burning Lights (in 2013), TobyMac's Eye on It (2012), LeAnn Rimes' You Light Up My Life — Inspirational Songs (1997) and Bob Carlisle's Butterfly Kisses (Shades of Grace) (1997). While Lecrae, 34, might not quite be a household name — he's yet to chart a single on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 — he has sold 1.4 million albums and 2.9 million track downloads. He has released seven studio albums, and made his chart debut in 2005 with Real Talk (No. 39, Gospel Albums). He reached the all-genre Billboard 200 for the first time in 2008 with Rebel, which peaked at No. 88. Lecrae leads a parade of new entries in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, where six more titles arrive. The seven debuts are the most the top 10 has seen since Oct. 26, 2013, when seven titles also stepped in (led by Miley Cyrus' Bangerz). Last week's No. 1, Maroon 5's V, falls to No. 2 with 80,000 (down just 51 percent). It had a smaller-than-normal sales decline because its sales were buoyed by redemptions of the album sold with tickets to the band's upcoming tour. Traditionally, those titles that debut at No. 1 tumble by more than 70 percent in their second week. The chart's second-highest debut is Jhene Aiko's full-length debut album, Souled Out, which enters at No. 3 with 70,000. It also opens at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and R&B Albums. Rocker Ryan Adams snags his highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 as his new self-titled release starts at No. 4 with 45,000. He previously went as high as No. 7 with two different albums, 2007's Easy Tiger and 2011's Ashes & Fire. Country singer Lee Brice starts at No. 5 with I Don't Dance selling 38,000. It also crowns the Country Albums chart — his first leader on that tally. His last album, Hard 2 Love, debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on Country Albums, selling 46,000 in its first week. Jeezy's Seen It All: The Autobiography dips 2-6 on the Billboard 200 in its second week, selling 33,000 (down 73 percent). Following Jeezy is rock band Interpol with El Pintor, which launches at No. 7 with 31,000. It's the group's third consecutive top 10, following a self-titled album in 2010 (which debuted and peaked at No. 7) and Our Love to Admire in 2007 (No. 4). Country singer Dustin Lynch is the sixth new album in the top 10. His Where It's At bows at No. 8 with 31,000 — his best sales week yet. It's his second album, and follows his self-titled debut, which hit No. 13 in 2012. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack slides 3-9 with 30,000 (down 43 percent). Lastly, Robert Plant scores his eighth top 10 album as a solo artist, with the arrival of Lullaby And … The Ceaseless Roar at No. 10 (29,000). It's his third straight top 10 as well, following 2010's Band of Joy and 2007's Raising Sand (with Alison Krauss). On the Digital Songs chart, Meghan Trainor's “All About That Bass” holds at No. 1, selling 312,000 downloads (down less than 1 percent). Taylor Swift's “Shake It Off” is steady at No. 2, with 309,000 (up 10 percent). Also stationary in the No. 3 slot is “Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, selling 147,000 (down 14 percent). Fall Out Boy's “Centuries” logs the week's highest debut, starting at No. 4 with 138,000. It's the first single from the band's upcoming sixth studio album. Iggy Azalea's “Black Widow” (featuring Rita Ora) descends 4-5 (127,000; down 11 percent), Nicki Minaj's “Anaconda” falls 5-6 (126,000; down 3 percent), and Clean Bandit's “Rather Be” (featuring Jess Glynne) climbs 8-7 (80,000; down 2 percent). Jason Aldean's “Burnin' It Down” steps 11-8 (78,000; down less than 1 percent), Maroon 5's “Maps” vaults 43-9 with 78,000 (up 161 percent), and Ariana Grande's “Break Free” (featuring Zedd) drops 6-10 (74,000; down 21 percent). Overall album sales in the chart week ending Sept. 14 totaled 4.2 million units, up 1 percent compared with last week's sum (4.1 million) and down 9 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (4.5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 166.9 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point in 2013 (195.5 million). Digital track sales totaled 18.5 million downloads, down 3 percent compared with last week (19.1 million) and down 16 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (22.1 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 812.3 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point in 2013 (932.4 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when Jack Johnson's From Here to Now to You debuted at No. 1 with 117,000 and Justin Moore's Off the Beaten Path started at No. 2 with 97,000. www.billboard.com/biz/articles/6251699/lecrae-earns-first-no-1-album-on-billboard-200

Chart Watch: Lecrae Brings Christian Rap To #1Twenty-five years after the trio DC Talk pioneered the form, Christian rap is still something of an anomaly, hence the title of Lecrae's current album, Anomaly. But by now there’s a ready audience for it. The album enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week (88K). Anomaly is the first album ever to reach #1 on both The Billboard 200 and Top Gospel Albums. It’s the fifth album to reach #1 on both The Billboard 200 and Top Christian Albums. What’s the difference between “Gospel” and “Christian”? “Gospel” usually denotes music performed in a Southern Gospel tradition by African American artists. “Christian” also encompasses what’s often called Inspirational or Contemporary Christian music, which is usually pop-oriented music performed by white artists. The four previous Christian albums to reach #1 on The Billboard 200 were Chris Tomlin's Burning Lights (2013), TobyMac’s Eye On It (2012), LeAnn Rimes's You Light Up My Life—Inspirational Songs (1997) and Bob Carlisle's Butterfly Kisses (Shades Of Grace) (1997). Anomaly is Lecrae’s seventh studio album; his second to reach the top 10. Gravity reached #3 in September 2012. Remarkably, Lecrae landed a #1 album before he ever appeared on the Hot 100. Anomaly is the second album to debut at #1 so far this year with a title that consists of a word that may be unfamiliar to younger fans. The first was ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron, which hit #1 in March. Stick with pop music and build your vocabulary, one album title at a time. Anomaly is one of seven albums to debut in the top 10 this week. That’s the most debuts in one week in 11 months. Is this a sign of how much exciting product came out last week, or simply a sign that few albums are showing staying power? You decide. Maroon 5's V dips from #1 to #2 in its second week (80K). It benefitted from a Ticketmaster bundle in which fans redeemed albums sold with tickets to the group’s upcoming tour. Jhene Aiko's debut album, Souled Out, debuts at #3 (70K), 10 months after her EP, Sail Out, reached #8. The EP spawned Aiko’s Hot 100 hit “The Worst.” Aiko has also been featured on two other chart hits: Big Sean's “Beware” and Drake's “From Time.” Incidentally, both Tower Of Power and Hezekiah Walter & LFC have released albums titled Souled Out. Walker’s album reached #55 in 2008. Ryan Adams's 14th studio album, Ryan Adams, debuts at #4 (45K). It’s his third top 10 album and his highest-charting album to date. Adams first charted in October 2001. Lee Brice's third studio album, I Don’t Dance, debuts at #5 (38K). It’s his second album to reach the top five. Hard 2 Love hit #5 in April 2012. The title track from I Don’t Dance cracked the top 40 on the Hot 100. (Genesis took an album titled We Can’t Dance to #4 in 1991.) I Don’t Dance enters Top Country Albums at #1, displacing Miranda Lambert's Platinum. It’s Brice’s first #1 on that chart. Jeezy's Seen It All: The Autobiography drops from #2 to #6 in its second week(33K). Dustin Lynch's second studio album, Where It’s At, debuts at #7 (3 1K). The album draws its title from Lynch’s single “Where It’s At (Yep, Yep),” which reached #48 on the Hot 100. The country singer’s eponymous debut album reached #13 in August 2012. Interpol's fifth studio album, El Pintor, debuts at #8 (31K). It’s the rock band’s third top 10 album in a row. Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 drops from #3 to #9 in its seventh week (30K). This is the 40th consecutive week in which at least one soundtrack has appeared in the top 10. That’s the longest consecutive run in which at least one soundtrack has appeared in the top 10 since 1992-1993, when a soundtrack placed in the top 10 for 49 consecutive weeks, thanks mostly to Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard. Guardians is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the seventh straight week. Robert Plant’s 10th solo studio album, Lullaby And…The Ceaseless Roar debuts at #10 (29K), three months after remastered versions of Led Zeppelin's first three albums debuted in the top 10. This is the 21st top 10 album of Plant's career. That tally includes 12 albums with Led Zeppelin, one as a member of The Honeydrippers, two collabos with Jimmy Page, one with Alison Krauss and five solo albums. Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour drops from #8 to #16 in its 13th week. The album holds at #1 for the fourth non-consecutive week onThe Official U.K. Albums Chart. Bob Marley & the Wailers's 1984 compilation Legend drops from #5 to #36 in its 294th week on the chart. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 121st week. Six U2 albums are listed on this week's chart, in the wake of an iTunes sale of the band's catalog (which followed the unprecedented free delivery of their new album, Songs of Innocence, to every iTunes account). All of the catalog titles were priced from $5.99 to $7.99. The band's 1987 classic The Joshua Tree is the band's top album. It re-enters at #47. Coming Attractions: Look for Barbra Streisand's Partners to debut at #1 next week with sales in the 155K range. Chris Brown's X looks good for #2 (about 130K). Also due: Tim McGraw's Sundown Heaven Town (67k), George Strait's The Cowboy Rides Away: Live From AT&T Stadium (45k), Train's Bulletproof Picasso (40k), Slash feat. Myles Kennedy's World On Fire (25k), and For King & Country's Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong (24K). music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-lecrae-brings-christian-rap-to-1-184711068.html

There are 65 Catalog albums on the Billboard 200 this week!
I'm starting to think Billboard should remove Catalog titles from the Billboard 200 since they are taking it over.
Give current artists a better chance to chart on the BB200.

There are 65 Catalog albums on the Billboard 200 this week! I'm starting to think Billboard should remove Catalog titles from the Billboard 200 since they are taking it over. Give current artists a better chance to chart on the BB200. Yes others would chart but numbers would get even more embarrassing

Yes- the bottom of the BB 200 would have lesser sales than what is there now. But, probably not much, since there's not much gap between albums in the second half of the BB 200.
I wonder how many catalog albums will be on the chart in November/December. :O

Give current artists a better chance to chart on the BB200. I completely disagree with you. The Top 200 albums for the week should be the Top selling albums for the week. I was SO happy when they changed their rule. Plus they have current album chart anyways. If an album 10 years old sells better than a new one why shouldn't it be on The Top 200 selling albums for the week????

^^ this. The BB200 should be the top selling albums, period. I wish they had a version of the Hot 100 that included all sales/airplay, regardless of the age of the song. I guess call it Top Comprehensive Singles Chart or something.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/6258983/billboard-200-chart-moves-frozen-exits-top-10-after-39-weeksBillboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Frozen' Exits Top 10 After 39 Weeks By Keith Caulfield | September 19, 2014 — Soundtrack, Frozen - No. 13 – After 39 straight weeks in the top 10, Frozen finally falls out of the region (dipping 7-13). This is the first time the album has melted away from the top 10 since the Dec. 28-dated chart. In total, Frozen -- which was released in November 2013 -- has sold 3.4 million copies and hasn't sold fewer than 23,000 in a week. It is 2014's top selling album, with 3.1 million sold this year. — Katy Perry, PRISM - No. 25 – The pop diva's most recent album vaults 52-25 with a 129 percent gain after iTunes sale-priced the set for $6.99 during the tracking week. Perry's Facebook page also shared a link to the sale, no doubt driving traffic to iTunes. — Queen, Live at Rainbow '74 – No. 66 – Queen's newest archival live album debuts, marking the band's first new release to chart since 2009. It's the group's 28th chart entry. Another new album, Forever Queen, is due Nov. 11 and features a previously unreleased duet with Michael Jackson titled "There Must Be More to Life Than This." — Madvillain, Madvillainy – No. 117 – A new special-edition vinyl release of the album pushes the 10-year-old set back onto the chart with its best sales week (3,000) since 2004. On the Vinyl Albums chart, it debuts at No. 3. — U2, The Unforgettable Fire – No. 142 – U2 and the Beatles combine for a total of 11 titles on the chart this week, thanks to the former teaming with Apple for the release of its new album and the latter's new mono vinyl reissues. Promotion in the iTunes Store for U2's catalog pushes six of their titles onto the chart this week: No. 47 (The Joshua Tree), No. 52 (U218: Singles), No. 78 (Achtung Baby), No. 142, No. 172 (Rattle and Hum) and No. 181 (War). The Beatles dot the list at No. 108 (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band), No. 147 (self-titled), No. 159 (Revolver), No. 166 (The Beatles in Mono) and No. 176 (Rubber Soul). — alt-j, An Awesome Wave – No. 186 – After a seven-month absence from the chart, the album returns (up 8 percent to 2,000 sold for the week) courtesy of the band's performance on TBS' Conan (Sept. 8). — Tennis, Ritual in Repeat – No. 189 – The pop trio (led by married couple Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore) arrive with 2,000, thanks in part to support from public radio stations like KCRW Los Angeles. The album's song "Needle and a Knife" was the ninth-most-played track on the station in the week ending Sept. 14, according to Nielsen BDS.
