Kip has just released a live EP that you can stream for free via Spotify. The link is here.
Now, it doesn't appear that you can purchase this EP (I think it's just a Spotify thing), but I'm still very glad we have it. This EP sounds simply incredible. It's 5 songs--one of them is a live version of "Beer Money" but the other 4 are all new songs: "Come And Get It", "Hang A While", "Heart's Desire", and "Lipstick". All 4 of them are incredible and they all sound like they are much stronger songs than "Young Love" and "Dirt Road" (and I did like those, but I like these new ones way better), not to mention more radio-friendly as well.
The Boot has Kip saying that he delayed the release of his sophomore album so that he could "make a record he fully believed in". Now, while I'm sure that's true (that he wanted to make a record he really believed in), I think we all know that the reason the album isn't out already is because neither "Young Love" nor "Dirt Road" did well enough (especially DR).
Still, having heard these new tracks, I'm optimistic again. "Come And Get It" sounds like it could return Kip to the top 15 at the very least, if not bring him all the way back to the top of the charts. "Heart's Desire" would be a great choice too. I'm not sure if I see MCA releasing a new single yet this fall, even though Kip's CMT headlining tour (with openers Sam Hunt and Charlie Worsham) starts tomorrow...mostly because the next couple of weeks are pretty packed with new releases. They could try to send a single out anywhere from late October through early December; otherwise, they'll probably have to wait 'til Jan/Feb and come back with a big roll-out plan.
Even though these are live, the production sounds really, really good, and Kip's vocals are just incredible. Okay, I need to find another word, because I've used 'incredible' a few too many times now. Kip just has such an awesome sound to his music and I really want him to be one of the next big stars. He and Charlie Worsham have been my 2 favorite newcomers in the last 5-10 years at least. So it was just really sad to see "Young Love" and "Dirt Road" not do that well especially after his superb debut album and the 1-2-3 punch of "Somethin' 'Bout A Truck" (really the only song I don't like from him), "Beer Money", and "Hey Pretty Girl" that did so well at radio.
I really hope he comes back with the right song. Man, I am just so excited again, because this live EP is really, really great. Hopefully Kip can get back on track and have more success at radio again.
