The Gaslight Anthem w/ Against Me! and Jimmy Eat World
9/12/14 @ The Mann Center in Philadelphia, PA
Against Me!
I liked the handful of Against Me! songs that I knew before this show, but not quite enough that I would have likely gone to see them by themselves. So I'm glad that these guys happened to be opening for two bands who I had been waiting years to see, because they put on a great show. Laura had a seemingly endless supply of emotion and energy throughout their set. I'll elaborate on this below, but their drummer was also one of the stars of the night.
Jimmy Eat World
I've loved Jimmy Eat World since I first heard "Bleed American" in 2001, and 13 years later, I finally got to see them live. This was apparently one of only two shows on The Gaslight Anthem's Get Hurt tour that included Jimmy Eat World too. :) Despite the fact that I'm not as familiar with their newer albums (I've listened to each one at least once or twice, but that's about it in some cases), they played every song I was hoping to hear. I was especially glad to hear "Let it Happen"- it's one of my all-time favorite singles from them, but I wasn't sure that they'd play it because it didn't even make the Alternative top 50.
The Gaslight Anthem
At the start of the show, Brian Fallon announced that their drummer had had to fly home earlier that day due to an emergency and that Against Me!'s drummer, Atom Willard, would be filling in. I know that professional drummers are supposed to be able to sight-read and all, but Atom still impressed me a heck of a lot considering that he didn't know The Gaslight Anthem's music at all (according to Brian). There were a few spots in which the percussion seemed slightly dumbed down (and understandably so), but other than that, I never would have been able to tell the difference.
After 12 songs, they changed gears and finished the show with a 10 or so song acoustic set (since, at that point, Atom had played a set with Against Me! and a 12-song set with Gaslight Anthem and inevitably needed a break). Some of the normally-electric songs sounded great as acoustics, while others sounded only 'okay'. Overall, I was glad that the acoustic set was part of the show. They have very few acoustic tracks on their albums, and I think Brian's voice sounds great on every one of them (especially "National Anthem" (not a cover of the Star-Spangled Banner ), which is downright gorgeous), so I've always wanted to hear more acoustic stuff from them.
