www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6274279/blake-shelton-scores-second-no-1-album-billboard-200Blake Shelton Scores Second No. 1 Album on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield | October 08, 2014 11:00 AM EDT Country king Blake Shelton earns his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as his new release, Bringing Back the Sunshine, debuts atop the list. It was released on Warner Bros. Nashville Records on Sept. 30, and sold 101,000 copies in the week ending Oct. 5, according to Nielsen SoundScan. He previously tallied a No. 1 with 2011's Red River Blue, which opened with 116,000. His best sales week ever came in 2013, when his last album, Based On a True Story, bowed at No. 3 with 199,000. His new album's current single, "Neon Light," rises 8-7 on the Country Airplay chart -- a new peak. It gained 10 percent in radio audience for the week, according to Nielsen BDS. It's his 21st top 10 on that list. Bringing Back the Sunshine is only the third country album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2014, following Eric Church's The Outsiders (on the chart dated March 1) and Shelton's wife, Miranda Lambert, with her Platinum set (June 21). Shelton also brings "sunshine" to the top of the chart for the first time. It's the first occasion the word has been used in the title of a No. 1 album. The previous highest-ranked "sunshine" album was Natasha Bedingfield's No. 3-peaking Pocketful of Sunshine in 2008. Another country act, Lady Antebellum, arrives in the No. 2 slot on the Billboard 200 with their fifth studio release, 747. It sold 74,000 copies in its first week, which is less than half of what their last album, 2013's Golden, bowed with: 167,000. 747 is the group's sixth top 10 album. With Shelton and Lady Antebellum at Nos. 1 and 2, this is the first time the top two albums are country efforts in nearly four years. Country music last controlled the top two rungs on the Nov. 20, 2010-dated chart, when Taylor Swift's Speak Now and Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Barbra Streisand's duets album Partners holds at No. 3 with 73,000 (down 43 percent) and last week's No. 1, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga's Cheek to Cheek, falls to No. 4 with 59,000 (down 55 percent). Next up, Prince arrives with the first of his two debuts in the top 10: Art Official Age, which bows at No. 5 with 51,000. He also enters at No. 8 with Plectrumelectrum (with the band 3rdEyeGirl; 26,000). Prince is the first act to achieve two simultaneous top 10 debuts in a little more than 10 years. The last act to do so was Nelly, on the chart dated Oct. 2, 2004, when his Suit and Sweat albums started at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Kenny Chesney's The Big Revival slips 2-6 in its second week with 39,000 (down 70 percent) and Maroon 5's V rises 9-7 with 31,000 (up 19 percent). The latter title benefits from the band's performance on NBC's Saturday Night Live on Oct. 4. Chris Brown's X falls 6-9 with 24,000 (down 36 percent) and The Script's No Sound Without Silence debuts at No. 10 with 24,000. Over on the Digital Songs chart, Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" maintains its grip on the No. 1 slot, selling 202,000 downloads (down 20 percent). Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" is steady at No. 2 with 188,000 (down 16 percent). One Direction and Carrie Underwood come crashing in at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, with their newest singles: "Steal My Girl" and "Something In the Water." One Direction sold 186,000 downloads, while Underwood shifted 125,000. The former is from One Direction's forthcoming new studio album, titled Four (due Nov. 17). The latter is the lead track from Underwood's first greatest hits album, Greatest Hits: Decade #1, due out Dec. 9. "Something In the Water" clocks Underwood's best debut sales week for a digital song, and her highest sales frame since 2009 (when "I Told You So," featuring Randy Travis, sold 126,000 in the week after the pair performed it on Fox TV's American Idol). Maroon 5's "Animals" roars 21-5 (115,000; up 121 percent) following the song's music video premiere on Sept. 29 and a release of a new remix featuring J. Cole. The band also played the tune during their Saturday Night Live appearance. (The J. Cole remix represents about 14,000 downloads of the song's sales total for the week.) "Bang Bang," by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj falls 3-6 with 106,000 (down 15 percent), Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow," featuring Rita Ora, dips 5-7 with 89,000 (down 14 percent) and Tove Lo's "Habits (Stay High)" descends 4-8 with 88,000 (down 19 percent). Jason Aldean's "Just Gettin' Started" is the third and final debut in the top 10, bowing at No. 9 with 86,000. It's the latest offering from his new album, Old Boots, New Dirt, which will make a high debut on next week's Billboard 200 chart. Closing out the top 10 is Jason Derulo's "Trumpets," horning its way into the region with a 12-10 climb (78,000; up 11 percent). It's Derulo's sixth top 10 on the Digital Songs chart, and the third from his Talk Dirty album (following the title track and "Wiggle"). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Oct. 5) totaled 4.35 million units, down 1 percent compared with the sum last week (4.41 million) and down 9 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (4.80 million). Year to date album sales stand at 180.01 million, down 14 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (209.98 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 18.17 million downloads, down 1 percent compared with last week (18.02 million) and down 8 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (19.81 million). Year to date track sales are at 866.66 million, down 13 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (994.41 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Miley Cyrus' Bangerz debuted at No. 1, selling 270,000 copies, Panic! at the Disco's Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die started in the No. 2 slot with 84,000.

Better than the 90,000 first projected. At least Blake Shelton has opened north of the 100k mark three times.

SoundScan should announce today that Adele's "21" has sold over 11 million copies.
Will her label also announce her new album today?

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-the-glut-of-country-albums-172401268.html Chart Watch: The Glut of Country AlbumsBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch Blake Shelton's BRINGING BACK THE SUNSHINE and Lady Antebellum's 747 hold down the top two spots on The Billboard 200. This marks the first time country albums have ranked #1 and #2 since November 2010, when Taylor Swift's Speak Now and Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party held those spots. That’s the good news. The bad news: Both Shelton and Lady A posted disappointing sales tallies. Shelton’s album sold 101K copies in its first week, about half of the first-week tally of his previous album, Based On A True Story… (199K). It’s also far less than first-week tally of the current album by his wife, Miranda Lambert. Platinum sold 180K in its first week in June. For that matter, it’s less than the latest by Maroon 5, the group headed by Adam Levine, Shelton’s frequent foil on The Voice. V sold 164K copies in its first week last month. Lady A’s album—its fifth studio set—sold 74K copies—which is less than half of the first-week tally of the trio’s previous album, Golden (167K). What’s going on here? There’s a glut of albums right now by top country acts. There may simply be more albums than country fans have time or money to pursue. Tim McGraw released a new album two weeks ago. Kenny Chesney had a new one last week. And many more albums by top country acts are on the way. Jason Aldean's Old Boots, New Dirt came out Tuesday. It will be followed by Florida Georgia Line's Anything Goes (Oct. 14), Little Big Town's Pain Killer (Oct. 21) and Garth Brooks's Man Against Machine (Nov. 11). (I skipped over Taylor Swift's 1989, set for release on Oct. 27, because she’s gone pop.) Why do they all come out right on top of each other? Sales spike for all artists in the fourth quarter and artists want to capitalize on that. For country acts, there’s a second reason. The annual Country Music Awards telecast (set for Nov. 5) is the biggest platform of the year for country music. Despite the disappointing sales tally, there’s a ray of “Sunshine” for Shelton. This is his second #1 album on The Billboard 200, following 2011’s Red River Blue. (Based On A True Story… debuted and peaked at #3.) Shelton’s return trip to #1 comes just four months after his wife Miranda Lambert landed her first #1 with Platinum. Two other married couples have each had #1 albums in the same calendar year. Beyonce and Jay Z have achieved the feat twice: in 2011 (with 4 and Watch The Throne, respectively) and again in 2013 (with Beyonce and Magna Carta Holy Grail, respectively). Faith Hill and Tim McGraw did it once, in 1999 (with Breathe and A Place In The Sun, respectively). Shelton’s album also enters Top Country Albums at #1. It’s his fourth #1 on that chart. Lady Antebellum's debut at #2breaks a string of three consecutive #1 non-holiday studio albums by the trio. 747 also enters the country chart at #2. It’s Lady A’s first non-holiday studio album to fall short of #1 on the country chart. Barbra Streisand's Partners holds at #3 for the second week in its third week on the chart (73K). It’s Streisand’s first album to spend its first three weeks in the top three since Back To Broadway in 1993. Deep trivia: This is Streisand’s third #1 album on which her name was shown as just Streisand (no Barbra) on the front cover. She was also identified that way on the covers of A Star Is Born and Guilty. Cheek To Cheek by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga drops from #1 to #4 in its second week (59K). For the first time in his career, Prince has two albums in the top 10. The funk-heavy Art Official Age debuts at #5 (51K). The rock-oriented Plectrumelectrum (which is credited to Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL) debuts at #8 (26K). These are Prince’s 33rd and 34th studio albums; his 15th and 16th top 10 albums. Prince first cracked the top 10 in May 1983 with 1999. Prince is the first artist to debut in the top 10 with two albums in the same week since Nelly opened at #1 and #2 in October 2004 with Suit and Sweat. The all-female trio 3RDEYEGIRL is Prince’s third backing group on a top 10 album. He teamed with The Revolution on Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day and Parade and with The New Power Generation on Diamonds And Pearls and The Love Symbol Album. Kenny Chesney's The Big Revival drops from #2 to #6 in its second week (39K) … Maroon5's V rebounds from #9 to #7 in its fifth week (31K). The group performed on Saturday Night Live on Oct. 4, the day before the end of the sales tracking week. Chris Brown's X drops from #6 to #9 in its third week (24K) … The Script's fourth studio album, No Sound Without Silence, debuts at #10 (24K). It’s the group’s second top 10 album. The album reached #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart. Adele's 21 tops the 11 million mark in U.S. sales this week. I took a look at this blockbuster in a separate blog we posted last week. If you missed it, here's a link. Coming Attractions: Look for Jason Aldean's Old Boots, New Dirt to debut at #1 next week. Also due: Hozier's Hozier, Alex & Sierra's It’s About Us, Keyshia Cole's Point Of No Return, Jackson Browne'sStanding In The Breach, Weezer's Everything Will Be Alright In The End, Stevie Nicks's 24 Karat Gold—Songs From The Vault and Tinashe's Aquarius

George Strait’s three week old live album The Cowboy Rides Away: Live From AT&T Field has now sold 87k copies, which is a strong sales number for a live recording. Garth Brooks’ The Ultimate Hits continues its renaissance as a physical piece of media in stores while Dustin Lynch’s Where It’s At surpasses the 50k albums scanned mark in one month on the charts. Prince has a unique distinction this week…I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure no artist has ever topped both the rock and R&B album charts in the same week with two different albums. Honestly, I can't think of any other major artists who could even release two albums of different genres in the same week.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6281504/adele-21-surpasses-11-million-sales Adele's '21' Surpasses 11 Million In U.S. SalesBy Keith Caulfield | October 10, 2014 Adele's mega-selling second studio album, 21, has surpassed the 11 million sales mark in the U.S., according to Nielsen Soundscan. The set, released in 2011 on XL/Columbia Records, is only the 12th album to sell at least that many copies since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. 21 sold another 4,000 in the week ending Oct. 5, bringing its cumulative sum to just over 11 million after 189 weeks in release. (It has sold 157,000 to date in 2014 alone.) The album was released on Feb. 21, 2011, spent 24 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and has yet to exit the tally: It has spent all but 11 of its chart weeks in the top 100. On the latest chart, reflecting the sales week ending Oct. 5, it climbs 113-95. The last album to hit 11 million faster than 21 was nearly 12 years ago, when Creed's Human Clay hit 11 million in its 165th week of release (week ending Nov. 24, 2002). Adele is currently working on her third album, and it is not due until at least next year, according to reports. A recent financial filing by her label, XL Recordings (reported by The New York Times), states that "there will not be a further new release by Adele in 2014." Her publicist tells Billboard that "at the moment, nothing is scheduled." Earlier this year, Adele tweeted a cryptic note, leading some to think that a new album might materialize by the end of this year. 21 finished both 2011 and 2012 as the top-selling album of the year and was Billboard's year-end top Billboard 200 album for both years. (It was the first time an album had achieved that distinction since Michael Jackson's Thriller in 1983 and 1984.) 21 generated five hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including three No. 1s: "Rolling in the Deep," "Set Fire to the Rain" and "Someone Like You." 21 is the 12th largest-selling album of the SoundScan era, and the fifth-biggest by a woman. The top seller in that 1991-present span is Metallica's self-titled 1991 album, with 16.04 million, followed by Shania Twain's Come On Over (15.58 million), Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill (14.95 million), the Beatles' 1 (12.41 million), Backstreet Boys' Millennium (12.25 million), the Whitney Houston-led The Bodyguard soundtrack (12.14 million), Santana's Supernatural (11.85 million), Creed's Human Clay (11.69 million), Marley's Legend (11.66 million), 'N Sync's No Strings Attached (11.16 million), Norah Jones' Come Away With Me (11.02 million) and Adele's 21 (11 million).

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6281527/herb-alpert-returns-charts?utm_source=twitter Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Herb Alpert Returns After 27-Year AbsenceBy Keith Caulfield | October 10, 2014 Plus: the first new Christmas album of the season debuts! On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart, Blake Shelton scored his second No. 1 album with Bringing Back the Sunshine, as the Warner Bros. Nashville album sold 100,000 copies in the week ending Oct. 5, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Shelton's effort was one of five debuts in the top 10. Of course, there was lots of chart action elsewhere on the chart. Let's take a closer look: – Herb Alpert, In the Mood - No. 172 – The legendary Herb Alpert -- who has earned five No. 1 albums in the 1960s -- returns to the Billboard 200 for the first time in 27 years as his new album, In the Mood, as it debuts at No. 147. He last appeared on the list with 1987’s Keep Your Eye on Me, which peaked at No. 18 and spent its final week on the tally on Oct. 17 of that year. Alpert's new effort sold 2,000 first-week copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and also debuts at No. 2 on Traditional Jazz Albums. That’s his second top 10 Jazz set in a row, following 2013’s Steppin' Out, featuring Lani Hall, which hit No. 10. Keep Your Eye On Me was released on the label Alpert co-founded, A&M, and supported by his top five Billboard Hot 100 hit "Diamonds." That track climbed to No. 5 on June 20, 1987, and was produced and written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. (It also featured A&M's then-biggest star, Janet Jackson, on vocals.) – Melissa Etheridge, This Is M.E. - No. 21 – The rock veteran's first independently released album, after spending her entire 26-plus year career on Island Records, also debuts at No. 2 on the Independent Albums chart (14,000 sold). — Soundtrack, Frozen: The Songs - No. 30 – A new permutation of the Frozen soundtrack arrives with 11,000 sold. The set includes only the songs from the film, without the score. Unlike the original release of the album, which included both the score and songs, and spent 13 weeks at No. 1. — Ray Charles, Genius Loves Company - No. 47 – Reissued for its 10th anniversary (with liner notes by Billboard's own senior correspondent Gail Mitchell), the former No. 1 and winner of the Grammy Award for album of the year, returns with 7,000 sold (up 1,976 percent). — Michael W. Smith, The Spirit of Christmas – No. 80 — The Spirit of Christmas is the first new holiday album to debut on the list this year, selling 4,000 and also entering at No. 5 on Christian Albums. Billboard's seasonal Top Holiday Albums chart will return next week, reflecting the sales week ending Oct. 12). — Bryan Adams, Tracks of My Years - No. 89 – The rocker's covers album starts with 4,000, and is his first chart entry since 2008's 11 hit No. 80. Adams' only No. 1 album, Reckless, celebrates the 30th anniversary of its chart debut in November, and will be re-released in an expanded deluxe edition on Nov. 25. — Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Gone Girl (Soundtrack) — No. 111 — This soundtrack (3,000 sold) from the Academy Award-winning duo is the third they've scored for a David Fincher-directed film. It follows The Social Network (it peaked at No. 20 in 2010) and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (No. 44; 2012).
