As expected, Taylor Swift's blockbuster 1989 album spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The set sold 402,000 copies in the week ending Nov. 9, according to Nielsen SoundScan — down a moderate 69 percent compared to its 1.287 million bow. The album's second-week haul is the second-biggest week for an album in 2014, following 1989's debut a week earlier. 1989 has sold 1.688 million copies in its first two chart weeks. Swift's last album, 2012's Red, fell by 72 percent in its sophomore frame (1.21 million to 344,000). The album before that, Speak Now, also started with more than a million (1.047 million) and slipped by 69.5 percent (to 320,000) in week two. It seems the music industry mostly avoided releasing albums from A-list artists to compete with 1989's second week. Thus, the top 10 sees only two new arrivals: Bette Midler's It's the Girls (No. 3) and Calvin Harris' Motion (No. 5). Last week's No. 2 set, the Now 52 compilation, holds in the runner-up slot with 59,000 (down 42 percent). Midler's tribute to girl groups — which features covers of such tunes as TLC's "Waterfalls" and The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" — bows with 40,000 sold. The Warner Bros. Records release is Midler's highest debut ever, and second-highest charting album following the No. 2-peaking Beaches soundtrack. (The latter consists entirely of Midler tunes, as heard throughout the film.) It's the Girls is Midler's first album since 2008's greatest hits set Jackpot! The Best Bette, and first album of new material since the 2006 Christmas effort Cool Yule. Below Midler is Jason Aldean's former No. 1 Old Boots, New Dirt, which rises 5-4 with just over 35,000 (down just 17 percent). It's one of the albums in the top 10 that benefit from exposure on the Country Music Association Awards (CMA Awards) on Nov. 5. Aldean performed the album's "Burnin' It Down" on the broadcast. Calvin Harris scores his first top 10 album as his fourth studio release, Motion, bows at No. 5. It also easily clocks his best sales week yet with 35,000 sold. His previous high was logged by his last album, 18 Months, when it debuted and peaked at No. 19 in 2012, starting with 17,000 sold. Florida Georgia Line's Anything Goes is steady at No. 6 with 30,000 (down 21 percent), Barbra Streisand's Partners climbs 11-7 with 28,000 (down 2 percent) and Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour jumps 14-8 with 27,000 (up 2 percent). Brantley Gilbert's Just As I Am zooms 62-9 with 26,000 (up 306 percent) as it was deeply discounted to 99-cents during the tracking week in the Google Play store. Sam Hunt's Montevallo rounds out the top 10, sliding 3-10 with 25,000 (down 64 percent). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" bounces back to No. 1 (up one spot) with 190,000 (up 43 percent). The song's sales were aided by its performance by Trainor on the CMA Awards with Miranda Lambert. Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" slips 1-2 with 164,000 (though up 5 percent), while Swift's "Shake It Off" re-enters at No. 3 with 130,000 (up 1,020 percent). The latter song fell off the tally last week due to complete-my-album transactions in the iTunes Store (effectively exchanging the song for an album purchase of its parent album, 1989). Hozier's "Take Me to Church" holds at No. 4 (123,000; up 16 percent) and Maroon 5's "Animals" dips 3-5 (114,000; up 4 percent). Selena Gomez scores her second-biggest debut sales week, as "The Heart Wants What It Wants" bows at No. 6 with 102,000. It's the first single from her upcoming greatest hits album, For You, due out Nov. 24. Gomez's biggest sales start came with 2011's "Who Says," which launched with 116,000. Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" climbs 11-7 with just over 84,000 (up 20 percent) and Carrie Underwood's "Something In the Water" bounds 35-8 with 84,000 (up 144 percent). The song was performed on the CMA Awards (Nov. 5), while its music video premiered the same night. "Bang Bang," by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj rises 10-9 with 83,000 (up 17 percent) and Tove Lo's "Habits (Stay High)" descends 5-10 with 81,000 (up 3 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 9) totaled 4.95 million units, down 15 percent compared with the sum last week (5.80 million) and down 13 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.68 million). Year to date album sales stand at 204.14 million, down 13 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (234.33 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 18.29 million downloads, up 6 percent compared with last week (17.29 million) and down 11 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (20.62 million). Year to date track sales are at 953.65 million, down 13 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (1.09 billion). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Lady Gaga's ARTPOP debuted at No. 1 with 258,000. The previous week's leader, Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2, fell to No. 2 with 210,000 (down 73 percent).

#5 seems to be the highest EDM acts can go.. Didn't both David Guetta and Avicii reach #5 as well?

I thought $0.99 albums no longer counted post-Gaga?

Fantastic sales for Taylor. Also, I'm really glad to see Calvin finally get a Top10, and a Top5, album. Deserved.

When was the last time that someone sold 400k+ on their second week? As far as I can remember, The 20/20 Experience, Red, Tha Carter IV, Born This Way, Speak Now, Tha Carter III and Graduation all missed the mark. Did The Massacre do it? If anyone has second week sales for The Massacre/Feels Like Home/Confessions/any other albums with 750k+ opening weeks, I'd love to see.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-calvin-harris-in-motion-201236123.htmlChart Watch: Calvin Harris In Motion By Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch Calvin Harris lands his first top 10 album as Motion, his fourth studio album, enters The Billboard 200 at #5 (35K). Harris’s previous album, 18 Months, peaked at #19. Two songs from the new album have made the top 20: “Summer” and “Blame” (featuring John Newman). Motion enters The U.K.’s Official Albums Chart at #2. Trivia note: Harris is the third artist with that surname to land a top five album. Jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris hit #2 in 1961 with Exodus To Jazz. Actor and singer Richard Harris hit #4 in 1968 with A Tramp Shining. Taylor Swift's 1989 sold 402K copies in its second week, which tops the first-week sales of every other album so far this year. (Swift’s closest competition is Coldplay's Ghost Stories, which sold 383K copies in its first week in May.) I wrote about this in a separate blog which we posted today. If you missed it, here’s a link. Now 52 holds at #2 for the second week (59K). Bette Midler's 14th studio album, It’s The Girls!, debuts at #3 (40K). It’s her sixth top 10 album. She scored her first, The Divine Miss M, in March 1973. Midler has now put an album in the top 10 in five consecutive decades. This is her highest-charting album since the Beaches soundtrack peaked at #2 in June 1989. I wrote a separate blog about Midler’s album, which we posted on Monday. If you missed it, here’s a link. Jason Aldean's Old Boots, New Dirt rebounds from #5 to #4 in its fifth week (35K). Aldean sang his #1 country hit “Burnin’ It Down” on last week’s Country Music Assn. Awards. The album tops the 500K sales mark this week. Aldean’s previous album, Night Train, took just two weeks to reach 500K. His album before that, My Kinda Party, took seven weeks. So this is more or less in line. Old Boots returns to #1 on Top Country Albums. This is its second week on top of that chart. Three other country albums are listed in this week’s top 10. Florida Georgia Line's Anything Goes holds at #6 for the second week in its fourth week (30K) … Brantley Gilbert's Just As I Am rebounds from #62 to #9 in its 25th week (26K). There was a 99-cent sale on the album in the Google Play store … Sam Hunt's Montevallo drops from #3 to #10 in its second week (25K). “Leave The Night On” is a top 30 hit on the Hot 100. Barbra Streisand's Partners rebounds from #11 to #7 in its eighth week (28K). Trivia note: This marks the first time that Streisand and Bette Midler have had albums in the top 10 in the same week … Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour rebounds from #14 to #8 in its 21st week (27K). The album goes over 750K this week. The Frozen soundtrack rebounds from #19 to #13 in its 50th week. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 40th week. The Doobie Brothers' 14th studio album, Southbound, debuts at #16. The group performed on the CMA Awards. The group had eight consecutive top 10 albums between 1973 and 1980. Ed Sheeran's x, which debuted at #1 in June, holds at #27 in its 20th week. The album returns to #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart. This is its ninth week on top of that chart. That’s the longest run at #1 for an album by a male artist since James Blunt's Back To Bedlam spent 10 weeks on top in 2005-2006. The two other albums since 2006 that have spent nine or more weeks at #1 in the U.K. have been by female artists: Adele's 21 (23 weeks) and Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events (10 weeks). Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV drops from #7 to #28 in its 271st chart week. The album is #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the second straight week. Paul McCartney & Wings' Venus And Mars re-enters the chart at #31. Wings At The Speed Of Sound re-enters at #45. Both were #1 albums; both spawned #1 singles: “Listen To What The Man Said” and “Silly Love Songs,” respectively. Wings At The Speed Of Sound logged seven weeks at #1 in 1976, longer than any other album by McCartney and/or Wings. Bob Dylan and The Band'sThe Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 11 debuts at #41. The Complete edition debuts at #42. If sales of the two editions had been combined, it would have debuted at #13. The original double-disk The Basement Tapes reached #7 in September 1975, 18 years after the album was recorded. Dylan’s The Bootleg Series was launched in 1991. Coming Attractions: Look for Foo Fighters's Sonic Highways to debut at #2 next week, with first-week sales in the 180K range. (Taylor Swift's 1989 will probably hold on at #1 for the third week, with sales as high as 300K.) Pink Floyd's The Endless River will probably debut at #3 (140K), followed by Garth Brooks's Man Against Machine at #4 (125K). Big K.R.I.T.'s Cadillactica and Nick Jonas's Nick Jonas will open around #6 and #7 (each with 35K).

The Massacre sold 771,000 in its second week. It was the last album to sell 400k+ in its second week until this week. I will never understand 50 Cent's popularity 2003-2005 (besides "In da Club").

Beaches indeed would count as a Bette Midler album, even if her name didn't appear on the chart back in the day- the RIAA credits it to her, too.

Ugh. Christmas albums.
Blake Shelton has *5* albums on the chart this week.

And the holiday albums return in force.
Mr. Buble's album is just unstoppable- and he has yet another holiday special airing this year.
Celine Dion's album is back early, and higher than last year- last season, it re-entered at No. 194 on the Dec. 14 chart.
