Also of note: Effective this week, the methodology for the Hot 100, along with Billboard's genre hybrid songs charts, has changed slightly to rebalance desired chart ratios for sales, airplay and streaming, as the chart's streaming component has often been above its desired average ratio, and download sales noticeably below, in recent weeks. Such adjustments to these multi-data pool charts are common (and have been implemented on the Hot 100 when, for example, sales had increased exponentially). Interesting...

Digital sales have been on a downward trend for a good portion of 2014. I am surprised they didn't implement this change sooner.

They should have separated the video streaming (youtube) and audio streaming (spotify,etc.). Decreased the ratio of video streaming only, maybe with slight increase of the audio streaming's ratio, but that's just nitpicking.

It's good that they choose to adjust the formula now instead of some months ago because this is the first week for the new Billboard year. They did the same for 2014.

Streaming adjusted down and sales adjusted up, wonder how that will affect things. Positively. The Hot 100 will finally give us a more accurate representation of the biggest songs (instead of things like Hot N*gga somehow being top ten with almost no sales or airplay. stay with me is finally gone it has been gone for a good 3 or 4 weeks now lol someone has been snoozing...

Glad to see Hot Boy out of the top 10. Also glad to see I'm not the only one, Love Me Harder, and Don't rise as well.

I wonder what the Canadian year-end chart will look like. This is what I am predicting, so to speak:
1. Happy 2. All of Me 3. Counting Stars 4. Dark Horse 5. Stay With Me 6. Timber 7. Rude 8. Fancy 9. Am I Wrong 10. All About That Bass
11. Talk Dirty 12. Problem 13. Maps 14. Shake It Off 15. Say Something 16. Summer 17. Team 18. Demons 19. Love Runs Out 20. Hideaway 21. Crazy For You 22. Wake Me Up 23. Best Day of My Life 24. Pompeii 25. The Monster
I probably neglected some songs so let me know and I'll fit them in. I am aware that quite a few of these will probably be off lol but I'm sure it won't be too far off from this.
I prefer this one to the USA one in many ways

No 'official' "R&B / Hip-Hop Songs" in the Top 10. When on Earth was the last time?!? So I just found out that this happened last on the week of October 27th, 2012 when the #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, "Diamonds" jumped 18-11 on the Hot 100 (this was also the second week after Billboard changed their methodology for the genre chart to be literally just the order in which all songs deemed by Billboard fall under R&B/Hip-Hop appear on the Hot 100 rather than being solely airplay-based). Of course Diamonds jumped into the top ten on the Hot 100 the following week and every week since then the #1 song on the chart was in the top 10 on the Hot 100, and most of the time even #1 (Diamonds, Thrift Shop, Can't Hold Us, Blurred Lines, The Monster, Happy, All of Me, Fancy). Surely before the change in methodology this was very common I assume because songs that didn't do so well on the Hot 100 like Climax dominated that airplay format. Interesting trivia!

No 'official' "R&B / Hip-Hop Songs" in the Top 10. When on Earth was the last time?!? There weren't any at all in the top 10 for most of 2012 so probably then. But I think it's possible that Tuesday or I Don't f**k With You might get top 10 soon. I don't really mind though, because R&B/Hip-Hop music has frankly dominated 2013 and 2014, nearly every pop song now is influenced by those genres as opposed to dance like it was before (even in the current top 10 ones like Love Me Harder, Don't and I'm Not the Only One).

Streaming adjusted down and sales adjusted up, wonder how that will affect things. It'll probably make the chart more volatile, i.e. less instances of the top 3/5/7 being static for week after week.

While I do think I'll *like* this change, this is the kind of masturbatory Billboard logic that bothers me. What is the "desired ratio?" Who defines it? Why am I not supposed to just assume this is Billboard trying to create more variance in the top ten (and prevent "viral smashes" from surging past more traditionally promoted songs)?
Again, not saying it doesn't or can't make sense, but it'd be nice if Billboard operated with more transparency - seeing how its chart data is so authoritative in the industry.

I wish this change happened back in February/March 2013 when Harlem Shake was #1. And I agree with the person who said that it should be only for YouTube streaming not audio-only streaming like Spotify. Those are essentially just on-demand radio where people pick a tune they want to hear and play it (not the case with YouTube though as butt vids and the like have too strong of an influence on what people want to watch rather than listen to)

Why do they owe us more transparency? The music fans... Billboard is an industry newspaper. They work closely with labels and retailers and now streaming outlets to compile the charts. Do most of them even subscribe to Billboard anymore? I'm not even sure they are authoritative except when it comes to the Hot 100. That seems to be the most talked about chart. Labels, retailers and streaming outlets can get all their info from SoundScan. Billboard has very little staff, makes a lot of errors and the magazine is a shell of what it used to be.

Labels, retailers and streaming outlets can get all their info from SoundScan. Billboard has very little staff, makes a lot of errors and the magazine is a shell of what it used to be. I feel like you're making two different arguments, so I'll reply to both: -- Regarding Billboard as an industry publication: Billboard hasn't been a pure trade journal in decades (if ever), and it isn't remotely one now. Like The Hollywood Reporter, it has actually worked hard to rebrand itself as an end consumer-driven publication (look at the change in content type). It is not an "insider" service like Mediabase or SoundScan -- it is a publication that targets and derives most of its visibility (if not revenue) from mainstream audiences, not from industry personnel. And even if you want to say it still *is* an industry trade, industry trades service mainstream, consumer-oriented publications like USA Today and Entertainment Weekly. It wants them to communicate its data - as that expands its credibility and awareness levels. -- Regarding Hot 100 transparency No one is saying Billboard "owes us" anything - but it is asking us to take it seriously, and we do post and obsess over the data each week, so why shouldn't it want to explain how it works? Why shouldn't we want to KNOW how it works? To my knowledge, the Hot 100 is the only key entertainment industry chart system that uses a concealed scoring system -- and operates without any sense of transparency. When Nielsen reports TV ratings, for instance, it doesn't just say #1 "The Walking Dead" (=), #2 "Scandal" (+2), #3 "How To Get Away with Murder (*hot shot debut*). It tells you how many people watched those shows and what percentage of different demographic viewers watched. It also doesn't apply undisclosed "curves" to its score the way the Hot 100 does. When box office data is reported, they just don't tell you rankings either. They tell you how much money the movies made. I'm not sure why we wouldn't WANT Billboard to tell us: Blank Space - A Sales (=B points) + C Streams (=D points) + E airplay (=F points) = Total Points = #1 Or, if it's not going to do that, at least explain changes to the methodology without relying upon hollow, vague buzzwords.

Paul Grain's chart watch from YahooMeghan Trainor lands her second top 20 hit in a row as “Lips Are Movin” jumps from #38 to #19 in its fifth week. Her breakthrough smash, “All About That Bass,” holds at #2 for the fourth week, after logging eight weeks at #1. With all this going for her, you’d think that Trainor would be a cinch to receive a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist next Friday. Think again. Eligibility in that category is linked to the release of a full-length album, or an EP consisting of at least five songs. Trainor’s EP, Title, consists of just four songs. So close! But Trainor will almost certainly have other nominations to celebrate next Friday. “All About That Bass” is likely to be nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. This week’s big Hot 100 news is Hozier landing his first top five hit with “Take Me To Church.” That was the lead of a Chart Watch blog which we posted Wednesday. If you missed it, here’s a link. This blog will deal with key debuts and moves below the top 10. "I Don’t F**k With You" by Big Sean featuring E-40 jumps from #14 to #11 in its ninth week … Mr. Probz's”Waves” jumps from #19 to #14 in its 14th week. The song topped the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart for two weeks in May. "Uptown Funk!" by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars vaults from #65 to #18 in its second week. “Uptown Funk!” is vying to become vying to become Mars’ fifth top 10 hit as a featured artist. Mars was featured on B.o.B's “Nothin' On You” (#1 in 2010), Travie McCoy's “Billionaire” (#4 in 2010), Bad Meets Evil's “Lighters” (#4 in 2011) and Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa's “Young, Wild & Free” (#7 in 2012). “Uptown Funk!” is the biggest hit whose title begins with the word “Uptown” since Billy Joel's “Uptown Girl” (#3 in late 1983). You had to know I wouldn't be able to resist that one! Selena Gomez lands her second top 20 hit as “The Heart Wants What It Wants” jumps from #26 to #20 in its third week. “Come & Get It” reached #6 last year. Three Christmas-related songs enter this week’s Hot 100. Pentatonix's “Mary, Did You Know?” is the week's top new entry at #26. Band Aid 30's “Do They Know It's Christmas?” opens at #63. Idina Menzel's duet with Michael Buble, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” bows at #78. Let’s take them one by one. "Mary, Did You Know" is from Pentatonix’s album, That’s Christmas To Me, which jumps to #3 on The Billboard 200. The quintet’s “The Little Drummer Boy,” from last year’s EP PTXmas, reached #13 on the Hot 100. "Do They Know It’s Christmas?" was re-recorded to aid in the global fight against Ebola. It’s the third version of this Bob Geldof/Midge Ure song to crack the Hot 100. The original recording by Band Aid reached #13 in 1984. A Glee rendition reached #92 in 2011. The new version features such top British stars as Bono, Sam Smith and One Direction—but not Adele, whose absence is conspicuous because the track was co-produced by her principal producer, Paul Epworth. The Band Aid 30 record enters The U.K.’s Official Singles Chart at #1. It’s the fourth version of the song to reach #1 in the U.K. The Band Aid original spent five weeks on top in 1984. A second version, attributed to Band Aid II, spent three weeks on top in 1989. In 2004, a version by Band Aid 20 spent four weeks on top. "Baby, It’s Cold Outside" is from Menzel’s top 10 album Holiday Wishes. The song has been a holiday perennial since it was introduced in the 1949 movie, Neptune’s Daughter. “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (written by Frank Loesser) is one of two Christmas songs to win an Oscar for Best Song. The other, as you doubtless know, is Irving Berlin's “White Christmas.” And now, back to the countdown. “Beg For It” by Iggy Azalea featuring MO jumps from #49 to #35 in its fifth week … Carrie Underwood's “Something In The Water” drops from #35 to #38 in its eighth week. Despite the drop, it's #1 on Country Songs for the third week. Ed Sheeran lands his sixth top 40 hit as “Thinking Out Loud” leaps from #62 to #40 in its seventh week … Milky Chance's “Stolen Dance” jumps from #50 to #41 in its 18th week … Tim McGraw's “Shotgun Rider” jumps from #54 to #45 in its eighth week … Ella Henderson's “Ghost” vaults from #94 to #52 in its fourth week. The song topped the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart for two weeks in June. Two songs from One Direction's FOUR enter this week’s chart. “Night Changes” is the week’s second-highest new entry at #55. “Stockholm Syndrome” bows at #99. FOUR enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week, with first-week sales of 387K. Lorde's “Yellow Flicker Beat” leaps from #82 to #65 in its third week … “Bed Of Lies” by Nicki Minaj featuring Skylar Grey debuts at #70. It’s from Minaj’s third studio album, The Pinkprint, which is due Dec. 15 … Imagine Dragons's “I Bet My Life” re-enters the chart at #72. The song has climbed as high as #53 … O.T. Genasis's “Coco” debuts at #77."Good Girls" by 5 Seconds Of Summer re-enters the chart at #85. The song has climbed as high as #34 … “Burnin’ Up” by Jessie J featuring 2 Chainz debuts at #90. It’s from her second U.S. album, Sweet Talker … Matt McAndrew's version of Hozier's “Take Me To Church” debuts at #92. McAndrew is a contestant on The Voice. "Booty" by Jennifer Lopez featuring Iggy Azalea re-enters the chart at #94 in the wake of the two stars’ show-capping performance of the song on the American Music Awards. The song (which also credits Pitbull) peaked at #18 … “I Don’t Mind” by Usher featuring Juicy J debuts at #95. It’s from his long-awaited eighth studio album, UR … “G.D.F.R.” by Flo Rida featuring Sage The Gemini re-enters the chart at #98. It has climbed as high as #84.
