Unlikely. It's only spent 5 weeks in the bottom half of the top 10 this decade. Might end up with 9 weeks in total.

The methodology has to be fixed before that can happen. Under Daniel Collins system, Uptown Funk is #3 but we know it should be #1 since on the all time list, UF is the highest song of the decade.

Streaming pay rates are not any drastically smaller than sales pay rates.

Almost the entire industry from veteran Country stars, to 80s Pop stars, to 90s Vocal Divas now makes more, if not, similarly as much from streaming payments as they do sales payments.

And if people who haven't had a hit in multiple decades are making $500k, $750k, and $1m in just America (1 country!) from streaming over a year (1 year!), how would new artists that are getting current hits with huge streams not 'be able to make a living'? A few millions sounds like a very privileged life to me.

This also ignores the fact the touring industry is bigger than ever.

In addition, there's also merchandise sales which is bigger than ever, endorsements (more oppurtunities than ever in the social media era), AND artists now have better tracking for when their music is used in media (SoundExchange) to help them get royalties.

And when streamed albums have the shelf life of a fruit fly, how likely are its listeners to buy tickets (at the prices demanded by U2 or Coldplay) to see that act in ten years' time?

Just because veteran artists do best in touring does not mean younger artists don't do well in touring at all.

Ed Sheeran's tour has grossed over $450 million (not on the list because it hasn't ended yet) and is looking to become the highest-grossing tour ever. Taylor grossed $350 million this year, Drake did ~$100 million, Bruno has done $200 million.

B-List & C-List popstars can easily pull in $10 million, $20 million, and $30 million with a tour. Demi Lovato's tour earned $18 million, Lana Del Rey's tour earned $16 million this year. A large percentage of that is certainly enough to live off for a lifetime.

I've forgotten the year Billboard published their Top Money Makers list when Drake made more money off streams than Adele made off album sales for 25.

I think artists in this generation will be more than okay. Like you've pointed out, there are several opportunities out there for the taking and a lot of these new artists are smart enough to focus their energy on touring excessively and establishing themselves as bonafide touring acts early on in their careers because touring has always been the biggest source of income for musicians.

I'm especially excited for the touring future of these new artists because a lot of artists who are burgeoning touring staples aren't necessarily massive mainstream acts. They don't score the biggest hits or pull in the biggest streams, but yet, they're flourishing off ticket sales and tour merch sales. I think they'll all be okay.

Like you also pointed out, the artists who are massive streaming acts/established touring acts will benefit the most moving forward. Better streaming rates are getting lobbied for yearly and by 2020-2022, when the music industry is probably entirely running on income generated from streams, I can see the streaming rates being even better.

Hot 100 All-Time Top  500 Artists list

How it's derived:

• Based on performance of all songs on the Hot 100 in the history of the chart (1958 to present)
• Only lead performers are credited for songs, even on duets. (e.g. Brandy & Monica, Rihanna & Drake. Yes, I know this makes it less accurate, but infinitely simpler to calculate).
• Songs are weighed based on the year they peaked. That is songs from faster moving chart years are multiplied by values greater than 1, slower moving years are multiplied by values less than 1. (Fastest year, 1965 is multiplied by 1.767, the slowest year, 2017, is multiplied by 0.595.) This allows for acts from all eras to be represented.
• Substantially the same act recording under different names (e.g. John Cougar / John Mellencamp, Paul McCartney / Wings, P. Diddy / Puff Daddy) are collected together. Regularly performing duos (Simon & Garfunkel, Sonny & Cher) are treated separate from their solo acts.

If Perfect is given the multiplier for 2017 (when it first peaked) rather than 2018, then it's in the same year as Shape of You & Despacito, so all 3 of those could be getting a lower multiplier.

Billboard uses 0.8 multiplier for 2017 and 2018 calendar years, and if it decides to use 0.75 for 2019 given streaming's still growing, I did a quick calculation that Girls Like You (1,510,292) just passed God's Plan (1,502,400) and top 15 of the decade.

But it's fascinating that using real points Girls Like You hasn't even entered top 100 of the decade yet... You heard me

rockgolf thanks for putting all the work into this and it was fun to see, however I do have a question about choosing only the "lead artist" for duets, because the thing is there is no lead artist for duets, they're credited together and get equal billing, by definition. The fact that one name appears before the other is arbitrary, or based on alphabetical order, and it might even get rotated, etc. I would just give both acts either full credit for the song, or split it 50/50 - I don't see how that would be too hard to calculate? You could also do something similar for songs with "lead" and "featured" acts, giving the former 70% of the points and the latter 30%, like how Billboard does.

Actually it would be very difficult to get all this information together. I’d have to go through 60 years of charts and identify situations where artists are credited as duets rather than as regular duos and there is no simple way to differ or differentiate those.
But, hey, if you want to put together a full and accurate list of every do a duet that has appeared in the history of the Billboard charts feel free to do so and I’ll try to get those numbers.
