One Direction’s ‘Four’ Makes Historic No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Chart

1D is only group to debut at No. 1 with their first four albums

One Direction makes history, again, as the act’s new album Four debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. They are the only group in the 58-year history of the chart to see their first four albums debut at No. 1. (A year ago, they became the first group to enter at No. 1 with their first three studio sets, when Midnight Memories bowed atop the chart.)

The new album was released on Nov. 17 through SYCO/Columbia Records.

Here’s a by-the-numbers look at the achievements the British/Irish quintet has made with Four’s chart-topping arrival:

- With 387,000 sold in the week ending Nov. 23, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Four earns the second-largest sales debut of the year, and the biggest week overall for a group. Only Taylor Swift’s 1989 was larger, with its 1.287 million start.

- One Direction is the only group to see their first four studio albums debut at No. 1. (They were already the only group to arrive atop the list with their first three sets.)

- They are the fourth act, overall, to have their first four studio albums debut at No. 1. They follow soloists Britney Spears (between 1999 and 2003), DMX (his first five, 1998-2003) and Beyonce (five, 2003-2013).

- Four tallies the biggest week for an album by a group since One Direction’s previous effort, Midnight Memories, started with 546,000 on the Dec. 14, 2013-dated Billboard 200 chart (reflecting the sales week ending Dec. 1).

- Four is One Direction’s fourth No. 1 album in a row, in less than three years. They previously topped the list with their debut effort, Up All Night (on the list dated March 31, 2012), Take Me Home (Dec. 1, 2012) and Midnight Memories.

- In the history of the Billboard 200 chart, only three groups have reached No. 1 with their first four studio albums: One Direction, The Monkees (between 1966-1967) and The Kingston Trio (with their first five sets, 1958-1960). While all four of One Direction’s albums debuted at No. 1, The Monkees and The Kingston Trio’s releases climbed to No. 1 after entering the chart at a lower rank. (The chart didn’t see its first debut at No. 1 until 1975, when Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy started atop the list.)

- In total, just six acts have reached No. 1 with their first four studio releases: Beyonce, DMX, The Kingston Trio, The Monkees, One Direction and Britney Spears.

Pentatonix Hits Top Three on Billboard 200, Nickelback Debuts in Top 10

As earlier reported, One Direction's Four debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 387,000 copies in the week ending Nov. 23, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the second-largest debut sales week of 2014 (after Taylor Swift's 1989 arrival of 1.287 million), and the largest week for an album by a group.

One Direction's start is slightly less than anticipated. On Nov. 18, a day after the album's release, industry forecasters suggested it would start with 420,000. By Friday, Nov. 21, its first-week projection was scaled back to 400,000. One Direction's last album, Midnight Memories, bowed at No. 1 with their career-high sales week: 546,000.

Swift's 1989 album slips one rung to No. 2 on the new chart — after three weeks at No. 1 — selling 214,000 (down 32 percent). The album has now shifted 2.21 million. With five weeks left in SoundScan's tracking year, 1989 is threatening to become the top selling album of 2014. Ahead of it is only the Frozen soundtrack, with 3.27 million.

Four is the final No. 1 on a purely sales-based Billboard 200. As previously announced, the Billboard 200 will shift next week to a multi-metric popularity ranking, incorporating traditional sales, on-demand audio streaming and digital track sales. A sale-based chart, named Top Album Sales will continue to exist however, both in print and on billboard.com

Shifting back to this week's Billboard 200, a cappella group Pentatonix collects its highest charting album yet (and biggest sales week ever) as That's Christmas To Me rises 8-3 with 99,000 (up 193 percent). It's their second top five album in 2014, following PTX: Vol. III (EP), which hit No. 5.

That's Christmas To Me is one of three holiday albums in new the top 10, as it is joined by Michael Buble's Christmas (13-9 with 35,000; up 34 percent) and Idina Menzel's Holiday Wishes (16-10 with 33,000 in its sixth chart week; up 39 percent). Holiday Wishes is Menzel's first top 10 album, and happens to feature a duet with Buble. As for Buble, his 2011 Christmas album is a former No. 1 (it spent five weeks atop the list in late 2011 and early 2012), and has returned to the top 10 in each successive holiday season.

The new chart's second-highest debut is owned by Nickelback's No Fixed Address, which bows at No. 4. The rock band's latest effort sold 80,000 copies in its first week, and marks their sixth top 10. The set is the group's first for Republic Records, after a long tenure with Roadrunner Records. The four-piece band's previous studio effort, 2011's Here and Now, debuted and peaked at No. 2 with 227,000 sold.

Garth Brooks' Man Against Machine falls one spot to No. 5 in its second week (62,000; down 52 percent). Pink Floyd's The Endless River dips 3-6 with 45,000 (down 74 percent) and Foo Fighters' Sonic Highways drives 2-7 with 36,000 (down 81 percent).

The third and final debut in the top 10 is rock band's In This Moment with Black Widow at No. 8. The group's Atlantic Records debut is their first top 10, and earns them a career-high sales week of 36,000. They previously topped out at No. 15 with their final release for Century Media, Blood, back in 2012 (20,000).

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" stays at No. 1, selling 302,000 downloads (down 8 percent), while Hozier's "Take Me To Church" is also a non-mover at No. 2 (176,000; though up by 34 percent).

Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!," featuring Bruno Mars, flies 18-3 with 111,000 (up 107 percent). Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" dips 3-4 with 106,000 (down 16 percent) and Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" rises 6-5 with 99,000 (up 7 percent).

Maroon 5's "Animals" descends 4-6 with 96,000 (down 22 percent), Nick Jonas' "Jealous" is stationary at No. 7 with 90,000 (up 8 percent) and Swift's "Shake It Off" drops 5-8 with 83,000 (down 11 percent).

Mr. Probz makes the top 10 for the first time, as "Waves" crashes 13-9 with 71,000 (up 17 percent).

Trainor's "Lips Are Movin," the follow-up to "All About That Bass," also hits the top 10 for the first time: 19-10 (69,000; up 34 percent).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 23) totaled 5.49 million units, up 2 percent compared with the sum last week (5.38 million) and up 4 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.29 million). Year to date album sales stand at 215.01 million, down 12 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (245.01 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 18.65 million downloads, up 5 percent compared with last week (17.72 million) and down 4 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (19.52 million). Year to date track sales are at 990.03 million, down 13 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (1.13 billion).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: One Direction's Midnight Memories arrived at No. 1 with 546,000. The previous week's No. 1, Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2, fell to No. 2 with 199,000 (though, up by 65 percent).

As of this week, Taylor Swift has sold more albums in the U.S. than any other artist who has emerged since January 2000. Swift's current album, 1989, sold 214K copies this week, which enables her to surpass Linkin Park on Nielsen SoundScan's running tally of best-selling album artists. That's impressive because Linkin Park had a six-year head-start on Swift.

Christmas in November: Three Holiday Albums in the Top 10

Christmas is still a month away, but three Christmas albums help to jolly up the top 10 on this week’s Billboard 200. Pentatonix's That’s Christmas To Me jumps from #8 to #3 in its fifth week (99K); Michael Buble’s 2011 album Christmas rebounds from #13 to #9 in its 33rd chart week (35K); and Idina Menzel's Holiday Wishes jumps from #16 to #10 in its sixth week (33K).

This is the highest chart ranking to date for Pentatonix. The a cappella vocal group may well wind up with a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist next week.

This is the fourth holiday season in a row in which Buble’s album has made the top 10. The album logged five weeks at #1 in 2011 and rebounded to #3 in 2012 and #8 in 2013. Christmas is the first holiday album to crack the top 10 in four holiday seasons. Kenny G's Miracles—The Holiday Album hit #1 in 1994 and would have returned to the top 10 in 1995 and 1996 if catalog albums had been allowed on the big chart then. Buble’s album holds at #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 17th non-consecutive week.

Buble is also featured on Menzel’s Holiday Wishes. The two stars team to sing the Oscar-winning classic, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” This is Menzel’s first top 10 album. She of course was featured on the Frozen soundtrack, which logged 13 weeks at #1 earlier this year.

Menzel’s albumis the first Christmas album by a Jewish artist to crack the top 10 since saxophonist Kenny G's Faith—A Holiday Album hit #6 in January 2000. It’s the first Christmas album by a Jewish vocalist to crack the top 10 since Neil Diamond'sThe Christmas Album hit #8 in December 1992.

Three Jewish artists have reached #1 with holiday albums. Kenny G hit #1 in 1994 with the aforementioned Miracles—The Holiday Album. “Sing Along With Mitch” leader Mitch Miller had a pair of #1 albums: 1958’s Christmas Sing-Along With Mitch and 1962’s Holiday Sing Along With Mitch. Singer Eddie Fisher, a superstar of the 1950s probably best known today as Carrie Fisher's father, topped the chart in 1953 with Christmas With Eddie Fisher.

You’ll notice that Menzel and Kenny G used the universal term “holiday” in their titles, while Diamond and Fisher went with “Christmas.” Miller had it both ways.

One Direction's FOUR debuts at #1 with first-week sales of 387K. I wrote all about this album in a blog we posted last Thursday. If you missed it, here’s a link.

Taylor Swift's 1989 dips from #1 to #2 in its fourth week (214K). 1989 this week becomes the first album to top the 2 million mark in U.S. sales in just four weeks since Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream did it in late 2009. After four weeks, 1989 has sold 2,207,000 copies. After four weeks, Boyle’s album had sold 2,461,000.

Each of Swift’s studio albums has reached 2M faster than the one before it. Red took five weeks to hit 2 million. Speak Now took six. Fearless took seven. Taylor Swift took 61.

With five weeks left in Nielsen SoundScan’s tracking year, 1989 is threatening to overtake the Frozen soundtrack as the year’s best-seller. Frozen is currently about 1 million units ahead in this calendar year (3.27 million to 2.21 million), but Swift may well close the gap. Swift had the #1 album of 2009 with Fearless. She would become only the fourth artist to have the top-selling album of a calendar year twice in the Nielsen SoundScan era. Eminem was on top in 2002 and 2010. Adele was the leader in 2011 and 2012. Justin Timberlake was on top as part of *NSYNC in 2000 and on his own in 2013.

Swift this week surpasses Linkin Park as the best-selling album artist that has debuted in the 2000s. That’s impressive because Linkin Park had a six-year head-start on the country-turned-pop megastar. I assembled a gallery of the 20 best-selling album artists that have debuted since January 2000. Nickelback's No Fixed Address debuts at #4 (80K). This is Nickelback’s sixth top 10 album, which brings them half-way to Rush's total as the Canadian band with the most top 10 albums.

Garth Brooks's Man Against Machine dips from #4 to #5 in its second week (62K). It’s #1 on Top Country Albums for the second week.

Pink Floyd's The Endless River drops from #3 to #6 in its second week (45K) … Foo Fighters's Sonic Highways drops from #2 to #7 in its second week (36K) … In This Moment'sfifth studio album, Black Widow, debuts at #8 (36K). It’s the group’s first top 10 album. Iggy Azalea's recent hit single of the same title (featuring Rita Ora) reached #3.

Frozen jumps from #18 to #13 in its 52nd week. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 42nd week.There are two other Frozen albums in this week’s top 40.Frozen: The Songs jumps from #28 to #16 in its eighth week. Frozen: Disney Karaoke Series jumps from #48 to #34 in its 32nd week.

Two other soundtracks debut in the top 20. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1 (featuring and supervised by Lorde) debuts at #18. Interstellar(featuring a Hans Zimmer score) debuts at #20.

The Art Of McCartney debuts at #27.The double-CD collection is a tribute to the pop legend. (The title is stiff and uninviting. Titles matter.)

Christmas At Downtown Abbey debuts at #44. A Christmas album linked to a diametrically different TV show was a smash last year. The Robertsons'sDuck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas, a Duck Dynasty tie-in, reached #3.

Coming Attractions: Look for Shady XV, which features Eminem, among others, to be next week’s top new entry, with sales in the 140K range. Also due: Beyoncé's Beyoncé Platinum Edition EP (about 60K), Rick Ross's Hood Billionaire (60K), Pitbull's Globalization(20K) and David Guetta's Listen (20K).

^Because it doesn't contain the score music; if it was a replica of the soundtrack, or close to it, and, say, contained some unreleased material, then it possibly could have been lumped with the original soundtrack.

Not sure with the TEA and streams added, if it will return to the top 10, though. maybe more likely on Top Album Sales.

I'm so impressed and proud of Pentatonix, truly astonishing that they've went viral!!! I've been a fan since their first performance on the Sing Off, so watching their career from the beginning is just insane to see them go this far!!!

They are very likeable and talented. It's really impressive how far they are in comparission with other winners of the sing off.
I would love they release an originals album, even if it's not all vocal (a good bunch of them play instruments or can collaborate with other people like they did in their Radioactive cover).
Radio took its time to open their door for them on the AC chart, but this year they are having less trouble to get spins than the last one.

The sales this week are pretty impressive, i hope their label really help them to reach a wider audience

It must be one of the years with less 1 million albums (i'm talking about albums released in 2014), apart of Taylor, there's no one right now, but probably with the big sales weeks ahead at least a couple more could make it

Yes i'm pretty sure he'll do, in the lonely album sales are very constant since its release.

The other albums near a million were The outsiders and Ghost stories, but they are not near the top right now so i don't know.

Maybe One Direction can go there, but i think it'll need more time
