It's subjective, but the truth is the comparision with The middle were inmediate, while that was not the case with i won't back down. And i don't think it was just a question of demographics because half of Sam's fans are in fact adults, most of them know Tom Petty. Of course I won't back down was a hit long time ago and that's not the case of The middle Now see, there you go again with "the truth". I've told you what the truth is. Musically, legally, practically. Keep ignoring it should you like. The comparison is more immediate literally, while it not be figuratively to you, in not recognizing it. Like I say I'm talking reality versus interpretation. It's a question of demographics in regards to the discussion not being mostly limited to dinner tables and golf courses as opposed to out there on Twitter in Instagram. Even if you've made the connection, and the relevancy in regards to the age of the songs you seem to have relented on, it doesn't seem you get why that connection means that people who enjoyed the song in the 80's aren't listening to Top 40 and discussing the similarities with Stay With Me. In any case, I have spelled it out. I'm not going to find other ways of explaining it. Enjoy your own conclusions. No such artist exists. Sorry, english is not my language so i use a lot of expressions in the way i would use them in spanish. Anyway what i wanted to say it's no matter how many notes Stay with me and I won't back down have in common (it's obvious they have a good bunch in the chorus) it's not an instant comparision. I remember perfectly I won't back down and only realize the notes in common (it's much the notes in common than anything else because the tempo and the feeling is very different) when someone posted the video in the STay with me thread. Maybe this has less in common with The middle, but that song came into my mind (and i didn't followed the charts so much back them and the song was not released in my country, so i'm not that familiar with it) when i heard this. And it's obvious i'm not the only one because the comparissions were almost inmediate when in the Sam Smith case the song was in the charts for a good while before the similarities with i won't back down appeared. In fact this was faster than the Lonely no more/Me and my broken heart comparisions.

Just for the record, I highly doubt The Middle similarities are the fault of anyone involved. I think it's too old and odd of a song for someone to consciously say "hey, let's rip that off so we can get a current hit!" I think the similarities are a coincidental or subconscious thing in this case.

I still can't sing Halo over AG or vice versa to this day. I hear the similarities in the beat/production, but I have to significantly alter the melodies to sing one over the other.

I've done it before, they are VERY similar, but what were they planning to do about it? Ryan Tedder can't sue himself.

Maybe you guys don't hear the comparisons with The Middle because that song wasn't burned into your bleeding middle school souls and pieces of it still remain painfully in tact???

Yes that is a great update. It didn't have a radio deal so that's basically just a nice solid increase that hopefully it can sustain for a while to come.

I did hear the similarities of that part the first few times I heard the song. Now that I've heard the complete song many times and expect what follows the Middle part, which is completely different than the Middle, I don't hear the similarity anymore unless I really concentrate on hearing it. Sorry, run on.

I hear the similarities, but I don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal about it. There's really nothing new under the moon after all. Just enjoy the song.

Pretty nice update! This seems to be starting off pretty well. I can't believe it never got a banner on iTunes at it's initial release!

Because apparently that seems to have become a new "it" thing to do. It was no end of annoying with Rixton last year, and it's no end of annoying now.

Because apparently that seems to have become a new "it" thing to do. It was no end of annoying with Rixton last year, and it's no end of annoying now. Well, with Rixton it was an agreement with Rob Thomas to avoid a being sued, and unlike other cases both parts talk about it on social media before the agreement. If one look for it, it's not that difficult to find similarities in most songs (of course the song needs to have similarities with a popular one or nobody cares) and people love to claim plagiarism (when in plagiarism is needed an intention to copy which is way less common than songs with similarities). Getting a vibe from other songs is not unusual and i predict people will forget that as soon as this started to get more airplay like it happened with Roar/Brave (and in that case the similarities were not a couple of lines but the whole song, of course Sara Bareilles didn't seem to care at all which make the whole discussions pointless after a while) and that songs even were on the chart at the same time

Well, with Rixton it was an agreement with Rob Thomas to avoid a suit Because the Internet trolls pretty much forced that to become necessary. Still shaking my head @ that whole debacle. As far as this song having anything to do with The Middle...I don't know, and frankly I don't care.

I think it's too old and odd of a song for someone to consciously say "hey, let's rip that off so we can get a current hit!" I think the similarities are a coincidental or subconscious thing in this case. Then what about Dear Future Husband and Runaround Sue? That's a little different since they were obviously actively trying to channel that retro doo-wop sound there, so it would make sense that they would have listened to big doo-wop hits when making it. That could have been a case of a rip-off. But this song has a completely different musical direction than The Middle in spite of the melodic similarities, and it's not like that's really a "retro" sound I could see producers wanting to play off of. Maybe I'm just making excuses though, and they did consciously rip off The Middle when making it. Who knows? We still don't know for sure if George Harrison was telling the truth about the My Sweet Lord plagiarism of He's So Fine being a "subconscious" thing.
