Taylor Swift Back at No. 1 on Billboard 200, Nicki Minaj Debuts at No. 2

Taylor Swift makes an expected return to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, as her 1989 album hops up one rung, bringing its total (nonconsecutive) weeks atop the list to six.

The set shifted 375,000 equivalent units in the week ending Dec. 21 (up 16 percent), according to Nielsen Music. (The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums [TEA] and streaming equivalent albums [SEA].)


Swift also leads the Top Album Sales chart, where the set sold 331,000 copies (up 19 percent). With one week remaining in Nielsen Music’s tracking year, 1989 has now sold 3.36 million and is on the verge of overtaking the Frozen soundtrack as 2014’s top selling album. The latter has sold 3.46 million this year.

With 1989 atop the Billboard 200 for a sixth week, Swift’s total weeks at No. 1 rise to 30 (she’s had four No. 1 albums, and all have spent at least six weeks at No. 1). She now ties Mariah Carey for the second-most weeks at No. 1 among women in the chart’s 58-year history. Only Whitney Houston, with 46 leading frames, has more. (Among all acts, The Beatles have the most weeks at No.1, with a whopping 132 chart-topping weeks from 19 No. 1 albums.)

Two new albums arrive in the top 10 of the latest Billboard 200, with Nicki Minaj’s third studio effort, The Pinkprint, bowing at No. 2, and D’Angelo’s surprise release Black Messiah starting at No. 5.

The Pinkprint launches with 244,000 units, with pure album sales representing 194,000 copies of that total. The album sold better than anticipated compared to sales forecasts made shortly after it was released. On Tuesday, Dec. 16 (a day after the album hit retail), industry prognosticators suggested the album might sell between 150,000 and 160,000 in its first week. By Thursday (Dec. 18), that forecast had rose to 190,000.

Minaj’s last album, 2012’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and sold 253,000 in its debut week.

Notably, Minaj’s new album is No. 2 on the Billboard 200, but No. 3 on the Top Album Sales chart, as it was surpassed in pure album sales by Pentatonix’s holiday set That’s Christmas To Me. The latter is No. 2 on the Top Album Sales chart, with 203,000 copies (down 2 percent). However, on the multi-metric Billboard 200, it moved 214,000 equivalent album units (down 2 percent) and is steady at No. 3 — behind The Pinkprint.

Last week’s No. 1, J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive, falls to No. 4 with 135,000 units (down 64 percent). It sold 119,000 copies (down 66 percent).

D’Angelo and The Vanguard’s Black Messiah takes a bow at No. 5 with 117,000 units (a sum greatly powered by album sales 111,000). The album is the R&B singer/songwriter’s first in nearly 15 years, since Voodoo was released in January of 2000. Black Messiah is his third charting album, following his debut studio set Brown Sugar in 1995 (peaking at No. 22 the following year), and Voodoo (No. 1, in its debut frame).

As for the rest of the latest top 10… Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour rises 8-6 with 102,000 units (up 26 percent). It sold 79,000 copies (up 32 percent). One Direction’s Four is steady at No. 7 with 101,000 units (up 22 percent), with album sales comprising 88,000 (up 22 percent) of that figure. Ed Sheeran’s x owns the chart’s largest unit gain, as it steps 9-8 with 100,000 (up 35,000 — a 54 percent rise). It also sold 61,000 copies (up 69 percent). Sheeran performed on the season finale of NBC’s The Voice on Dec. 16. The show garnered 12.88 million TV viewers, according to Nielsen.

Garth Brooks’ Man Against Machine rises one slot to No. 9 with 81,000 units (up 32 percent) — all album sales, as his set’s songs are not available for individual purchase, nor is the album on streaming services.

AC/DC’s Rock or Bust closes out the top 10, slipping 5-10 with just over 76,000 units (down 19 percent). Pure album sales (76,000; down 19 percent) comprise nearly that entire figure.

Don't understand how Billboard is arriving at 3.36 for "1989" or 3.46 for "Frozen."

The best number I'd seen for "1989" ahead of this week was 3.004 million. Even if we assume that it was actually 3.0044 and this week's total is actually .3314, you don't get past 3.34 million.

And the weekly "Frozen" number would have to be well below what HDD reported for 3.46M to be accurate.

Well the 3.36M definitely looks wrong (it's listed as 3.34M in an article about Pentatonix), but Billboard seems to be sticking to 3.46M for Frozen.

The streams/TEAs are just for the Billboard 200.

Swift: 3,003,000 last week + 331,000 = 3,334,000 = very close to 3,334,000

Frozen: 3,420,000 last week + 40,000 estimate = 3,460,000 - but 40,000 seems to low this week

The streams/TEAs are just for the Billboard 200.

Let me do some adding.

SEA/TEA shouldn't be part of this, though.  It's a pure sales metric - and it comes up in the paragraph about pure sales rather than BB units.

Plus, if the SEA/TEA data were included, the numbers would be way higher than they are.

Pentatonix's 'That's Christmas To Me' Surpasses 1 Million in Sales

Pentatonix gets an early Christmas gift, as their album That’s Christmas To Me surpassed 1 million in total sales in the week ending Dec. 21. With another 203,000 sold, its cumulative total now stands at 1.02 million.

That's Christmas To Me (released through RCA Records) is just the fourth album to sell a million copies in the U.S. in 2014, following the Frozen soundtrack (3.46 million), Taylor Swift’s 1989 (3.34 million) and Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour (1.13 million).

That’s Christmas To Me continues to be the a cappella group’s best selling effort, well ahead of PTXmas, which has moved 356,000.

Also of note: That’s Christmas To Me is the first holiday album to sell a million copies in a calendar year since 2011, when both Michael Buble’s Christmas and Justin Bieber’s Under the Mistletoe managed the feat (with 2.45 million and 1.25 million, respectively).

Taylor Swift this week becomes the first artist since the Beatles with four consecutive studio albums that each logged six or more weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200. She achieves the feat with 1989, which follows Fearless (11 weeks at #1), Speak Now (six weeks), and Red (seven weeks). The Beatles logged six or more weeks at #1 with seven consecutive studio albums from Beatles ’65 (which spent its sixth week at #1 in February 1965) to Abbey Road in December 1969.

Only one other act has logged six or more weeks at #1 with four consecutive studio albums. The Kingston Trio achieved the feat with four studio albums in a row, from The Kingston Trio at Large in August 1959 to String Along in October 1960.

That makes Swift the first female artist to achieve this feat.

This is the fourth time that Swift has had the #1 album in the last week before Christmas, which is traditionally the most competitive week of the year. She also did this with Fearless in 2008, Speak Now in 2010, and Red in 2012. No other artist has done this four times since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales. Garth Brooks is runner-up: He had the #1 album in the last week before Christmas (and/or the week that includes Christmas) three times (in 1994, 1997, and 1998).

Here’s another sign of Swift’s dominance: She has had four of the last eight albums to log six or more weeks at #1. No other artist has had more than one #1 album log six weeks at #1 in this time frame. (The four other albums to spend six or more weeks at #1 in since 2008 are Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed a Dream, Eminem’s Recovery, Adele’s 21, and the Frozen soundtrack.)

Swift has spent a career total of 30 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200. Among female artists, this puts her in a tie for second place with Mariah Carey. Whitney Houston leads female artists, with 46 weeks on top.

1989 is the first album to spend six of its first eight weeks at #1 since Eminem's Recovery in 2010. (Recovery spent seven of its first nine weeks at #1, which Swift will probably match next week.)

Swift’s album moved 375K units this week (which includes 331K in actual album sales. The rest reflects on-demand streaming and digital track sales.)

Nicki Minaj's third studio album, The Pinkprint, debuts at #2. Her first two albums, Pink Friday and Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, both reached #1. You’ll notice that all three of these albums have had the word “Pink” in their titles. It’s her signature! The title of the new album is a nod to Jay Z's The Blueprint, which was released in 2001.

By debuting at #2, Minaj’s album pulls ahead of Iggy Azalea's The New Classic as the year’s highest-charting album by a female rapper. (Azalea’s album debuted and peaked at #3 in April.) Minaj’s album moved 244K units this week (which includes 194K in actual album sales).

Pentatonix's That’s Christmas to Me holds at #3 for the second week its ninth week on the chart. The album previously spent two weeks week at #2. The album moved 214K units this week (which includes 203K in actual album sales).

J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive drops from #1 to #4 in its second week. The album moved 135K units this week (which includes 119K in actual album sales).

Black Messiah by D’Angelo & The Vanguard debuts at #5. It’s D’Angelo’s third studio album; his first in nearly 15 years. D’Angelo’s last studio album, Voodoo, opened at #1 in January 2000, with first-week sales of 321K. (Here’s an indication of how long D’Angelo has been MIA: Voodoo interrupted Santana's long run at #1 with its comeback smash, Supernatural.) Black Messiah moved 117K units this week (which includes 111K in actual album sales).

Black Messiah is the latest in a long line of album titles that have expressed black pride, including James Brown's Say It Loud — I’m Black and I’m Proud (1969), Isaac Hayes's Black Moses (1971), and Aretha Franklin's Young, Gifted & Black (1972).

Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour, which has climbed as high as #2, rebounds from #8 to #6 in its 27th week. The album moved 102K units this week (which includes 79K in actual album sales). In the Lonely Hour is the only album to have sold 1 million copies in both the U.S. and the U.K. in 2014. I wrote about that in a blog that we posted on Friday. If you missed it, here’s a link.

One Direction's FOUR, which debuted at #1 last month, holds at #7 for the second week in its fifth week. The album moved 101K units this week (which includes 88K in actual album sales).

Ed Sheeran's x inches up from #9 to #8 in its 26th week. The album, which debuted at #1 in June, logs its 11th week at #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart. That’s the longest run at #1 for an album by a male artist since Meat Loaf's1993 opus Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell. Sheeran’s album moved 100K units this week (which includes 61K in actual album sales).

Garth Brooks's Man Against Machine, which debuted and peaked at #4 last month, inches up from #10 to #9 in its sixth week. The album moves back to #1 on Top Country Albums, after being displaced last week by Carrie Underwood's Greatest Hits: Decade #1. This is its fifth week on top. Brooks’s album moved 81K units this week (all sales).

AC/DC's Rock or Bust, which debuted and peaked at #3, drops from #5 to #10 in its third week. The album moved 76K units this week (nearly all of which reflects actual album sales).

Frozen just misses the top 10 in its 56th week. The album returns to #1 on Top Soundtracks. This is its 45th week on top of that chart. Either Frozen or Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 has been #1 on that chart for 56 consecutive weeks.

Michael Bublé's Christmas also just misses the top 10 in the wake of his fourth annual NBC holiday special on Dec. 17. The album is #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 21st week. Since 1991, only one holiday album has had a longer run at #1 on this chart. That’s Kenny G's Miracles: The Holiday Album, which topped the catalog chart for 27 weeks from 1995 to 1998.

Oh definitely, he has a huge core fanbase, but I think the performance is still quite impressive considering the much lower than initially expected debut, the heavy criticism of GhostTunes, and the lackluster reception of the first single.

This week also puts 1D over the 700k mark, scratch up another Platinum album for them.

So it appears Hits Daily Double *was* way off regarding Frozen. Based on where Frozen falls on the Top Album Sales chart, it sold less than 50K last week. Thus, Taylor Swift indeed is ~120K back.
