Having already stated that Blake's current single is his best in several years and will hopefully be an enormous hit, I would certainly be downright delirious if this stellar single spent a month in the penthouse and trounced everybody on the year end charts as previous megasmashes including 'Live Like You Were Dying', 'Just To See You Smile', 'Ain't Nothin' Bout You' and '19 Something' did during their respective rampages on the chart.
Additionally, the fact that he very contritely acknowledged the mixed response to 'Looking For That Girl' via his Twitter reply which someone on this board posted right after that tune was released clearly indicates to me at least that he's going to execute more care in selecting better singles regardless of whom the culprit at Curb who wound up leaving at least two more enormous potential singles entitled 'Blank Sheet Of Paper', & 'I've Got Friends That Do' on their respective CDs as opposed to sending them to radio.
Definitely an exhilirating single anyway you slice it, and I hope he gets 3-5 weeks at #1 with this towering masterpiece. Given the deluge of new country stations nationwide over the past two years including the newly launched one in Chicago (http://www.big955chicago.com) which hit the airwaves two days ago, the format is definitely on fire, and here's hoping that one of the format's most prolific hitmakers of the past 20 years will lead the charge into even more ratings success.
Thirteen years ago this month, 'The Cowboy In Me' was the fastest-rising song on the charts enroute to a three week stay at #1 @ R&R Mediabase in a brisk 13 weeks; here's hoping that this equally superb tune at least matches that run.

Great song, first time hearing it; but I really enjoyed it and love Catherine's addition to the song. I'm not sure if she is the speed-skater or not, I'm thinking that may just be a weird coincidence that the location and last name being similar. She did however have the song "All The Pretty Little Ponies" in the movie Flicka, so that must have been her big claim to fame. Per she and Ben's wedding site, she only sings for FUN now..... wouldn't we ALL like to have a major single to radio with Tim McGraw (JUST FOR FUN)! HA HA Anyway, she works at a Chiropractor in Franklin, TN. Crazy what you can dig up on the net these days..... but there ya go, some more info on Mrs. Dunn. I still think she should have at least kept her maiden name (for artist sake), Dunn makes it too hard to track the girl down geesh Catherine and Ben Dunn's wedding page

I'm surprised they didn't go with the "safer" Overrated, but this is the hottest Tim's been in years and the risk in releasing this seems minimal. And what a great song it is, a throw back neo-traditional country in every respect. Meanwhile... was my favorite McGraw single in years (since Red Rag Top? Angry All The Time?), but Shotgun Rider grew on me so much that it actually overtook Meanwhile..., and this one tops them both by a good number. Now of course all of my optimism could be tempered if this flames out in the teens, but until that point i'll be trusting that McGraw can get this to the top.

If "Better Than I Used to Be" did as well as it did a few years ago, I can see this easily doing at least as well, more than likely better than that one did.

Hmmmmm. Well, 90s Country is what I grew up on, so if there's more of this sort where that came from, by all means bring it on! I had to listen to this one a few times to really get a feel for it. The harmonizing in the chorus really reminds me of "Bring on the Rain" (which, believe it or not, my CHR actually had in decent rotation), which gives this a bit of nostalgic value.

1. Another great choice. I'll give this album a listen when I have some free time. 2. That was based on just one listen, and I'm sure I'll love it even more eventually. 3. I really hope .indulgecountry's prediction comes true!

^ Lol. Personally, I'm not a fan of re-cycling the awful album artwork into a single cover, so one is plenty. ;)

Pretty rare to see a label send a song for adds on the same date that another one of their artists' songs goes for adds (I'm talking about Maddie & Tae's "Fly" which also goes for adds on the 26th). Then again, with A Thousand Horses' "Smoke" officially going for adds on the 20th, BMLG really didn't have a choice here. Waiting until February 2 or later would've been too long of a gap between "Shotgun Rider" and "Diamond Rings...", and also too long of a gap between "Girl In A Country Song" and "Fly".
It would've been a bad move to push back the add date for "Fly", and Tim is a big name so radio is going to want to start playing this one fairly quickly (in other words, most stations wouldn't have waited until February to add a new Tim single).

With this being the 4th single (even if they want us to forget LFTG), how much farther do y'all thing they go with this album? There's a lot of songs on the album and I still think he's got at least 2-3 more radio friendly songs that would succeed on the charts.

I think we will get one more for sure after this peaks, and then the decision to release a 6th single will probably depend on the album sales at that point, providing neither of his next 2 singles flop.

I agree. I think a fifth single (most likely "Overrated") is a pretty sure bet, and then a sixth would depend on album sales/the success of the fifth single.

Great country song. Currently, one of the biggest names in country music, Tim seems to me the more "traditional" (except "Looking for that girl"...but in my opinion was an experiment on the style Jason Aldean / Burn it down). Mama/Shotgun Rider/Diamond rings and old barstools are 3 great singles for Tim. I think Big Machine and Tim do not consider "Looking for that girl" a real first single for this current album because they have taken away it from the radio when he was still climbing in airplay.

"Diamond Rings And Old Barstools" is the most-added song on Mediabase this week with 66 adds! :)
It also debuts at #51 on Billboard.

^^^^That robust number of adds figures to result in a very lofty debut on CT 40 a week from Friday, and a top 30 debut wouldn't surprise me under any circumstances.
This definitely sounds like something that would have been right in line with all of the stellar singles and unreleased cuts from both 'Set This Circus Down' as well as 'A Place In The Sun'.

"Diamond Rings & Old Bar Stools" makes its MB debut at #46 this week.
I find it funny that Tim debuted at #51 on Billboard last week and Brad's latest debuted three spots below at #54. Tim this week debuts at #46 on MB and Brad debuts, once again, three spots below him at #49. :)

Wasn't sure if I commented on this song or not, but I'll be very happy if more songs like these keep getting released to radio, and not just from Tim.

There are a few pop and rap songs where the featured artist is so obscure that they never get a Wikipedia article or do anything of note again. In country one of the few examples I can think of is the Kimberlys collaborating with Waylon Jennings on one album then never being heard from again. I wonder if the same fate will befall Catherine Dunn?

I love the initial reaction to this. It's great to see a song like this in the top 40 (and climbing very quickly) in only its second week. Hopefully this will peak really high, and open the door for country radio to play more songs like this.

That's three great singles in a row. Again, why did he waste his talents on that atrocious Lookin' for That Girl? He's perfectly capable of having hits with quality material without having to jump on fleeting trends.

He's perfectly capable of having hits with quality material without having to jump on fleeting trends. You still need upbeat songs to sing in concerts that his fans will know. And let's face it, touring is the main way to make money these days. Yes, this song is FANTASTIC, but if you have 15 songs like this in your set list, the average concert goer is not going to want to attend. Now, with that said, I am sure Tim can have an upbeat song better than LFTG, but I still think it's a valid point why these types of songs get released.

I agree with you, but I think "Shotgun Rider" definitely fits the bill as an exciting upbeat concert style song. Seeing how it was immensely popular, I can easily imagine thousands of concert goers waiting to hear Tim sing that song every night. But this does bring up a good point that I think some of us on Pulse (myself included) tend to overlook, and it's that many single decisions are probably indeed motivated by the potential to be a popular concert staple or signature song. Many of us may clamor and want a particular ballad or slower song to be released, but in reality, most country concert goers want to see songs that require pyro and big room theatrics, hence why Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan tour so well.

"Shotgun Rider" has gone over a lot better with his fanbase and the general public, and I'm sure far more people will get excited for him to sing that than they would for "Lookin' for That Girl." The question here isn't about tempo; it's about quality. Both are pretty uptempo, but one of them is an excellent song, and the other is an absolute waste. I'm glad he's headed in a really good direction after LFTG at least, and I hope that continues.

Too early to panic yet, but the sales for this song are really lagging, especially compared to "Shotgun Rider" which started off very quickly. I know it's only been out a few weeks, but still at 163 on the Country Genre iTunes chart. In comparison, "Wild Child", which had an adds date around the same time, is already up to number 56. Now I'm still hearing "Shotgun Rider" quite a bit and I fully believe that alone is affecting the sales a bit, but still, I would like to see this one in the top 100 already, especially considering it's from such a big star.

I figured that the Chesney track would start off better in sales than this one would, but Tim is still outside the top 1000 all-genre on iTunes with this one. Only Toby Keith, Joe Nichols, and Gloriana have worse sales per spin ratios. It's still early, though, so I'm sure this will start to sell better over the next month or so, but I do think its initial reception is rather disappointing.
On a related note, the "Makin' Tracks" column in the mid-week BCU states that George Strait had this song on hold for a time but that he never cut it. I thought that was an interesting little tidbit.

This song gets better with each listen. I swear it sounds like a song that was on the charts in 2004 or 2005 - it could have fit right in with his Live Like You Were Dying album (though the song is excellent, which means Curb would have left it as an album track).
I liked "Shotgun Rider" but this one is definitely better IMO. I might like it better than "Meanwhile Back At Mama's". Catherine Dunn did a great job on backing vocals. I'm so glad that they made many forget about that embarrassment of a lead single.

This song is going fast in the ranking airplay. Not bad for a song not too radio friendly (given that "Shotgun rider" is still going well in both radio & sales).

Something I noticed when browsing the iTunes chart...this has two versions charting. At this posting, the second is at #278 (all-genre).
Now, I'm really not sure of sales amounts down at those levels...but at the very least, the combined total would certainly rank closer to #100 - would it be enough to rank inside the Top 100 as a single figure?
