Taylor Swift's '1989' Spends a Ninth Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 ChartThere's no stopping Taylor Swift, as the superstar notches a ninth week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with her 1989 album. 1989 sold 155,000 equivalent units in the week ending Jan. 11, according to Nielsen Music (down 36 percent). The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Taylor Swift Surprised a Fan With The World's Sweetest Gift Swift also easily leads the Top Album Sales chart, which ranks the best selling albums of the week based on pure album sales. 1989 sold 111,000 copies last week (down 35 percent). The set has now sold 3.94 million, and is on the verge of becoming Swift's fifth album to sell 4 million copies. (Each of her studio efforts have exceeded four million in U.S. sales.) Back on the new Billboard 200 chart, Ed Sheeran's x continues to climb, rising one position to No. 2 with 76,000 units (down 9 percent). Regular album sales comprise 34,000 of that figure (down 13 percent). This is the highest Billboard 200 rank for the set since its second week on the chart, when it fell 1-2 on the list dated July 19, 2014. Nick Minaj's The Pinkprint slips 2-3 with 60,000 units (down 29 percent), selling 34,000 copies (down 34 percent). Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour is steady at No. 4 with 57,000 units (down 31 percent). His album shifted 30,000 in sales for the week (down 38 percent). The lone debut in the top 10 -- and the only bow in the top 30 -- starts at No. 5, as hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd enters with its first set, SremmLife. The album shifted 49,000 units in its first week, powered by 34,000 in traditional album sales. Hozier's self-titled album is a non-mover at No. 6 with 49,000 units (down 19 percent). Of its 49,000 units for the week, regular album sales total just 20,000 units (down 20 percent). J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive is also steady at No. 7, selling 45,000 units (down 24 percent). 34,000 of that figure are album sales (down 29 percent). The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack falls 5-8 with 35,000 (down 50 percent), comprised entirely of traditional album sales. Rounding out the top 10 are two stationary albums: One Direction's Four (No. 9; 32,000 units -- down 41 percent) and Ariana Grande's My Everything (No. 10; 28,000 -- down 34 percent). In terms of pure album sales, the titles sold a respective 17,000 (down 47 percent) and 7,000 (down 38 percent). www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6436693/taylor-swift-1989-ninth-week-no-1-billboard-200

Taylor just won't let up. A remarkable run that may not end anytime soon.
Also nice to see Ed returning to No. 2
Pretty bland week overall though, not much happening. One debut in the Top 30 :(

The TEA+SEA stuff is certainly making the BB200 seem less dire.

Ariana sold 7000 copies and ended up at 10? Geez... This is so unfair to older artists and soundtracks where the majority of the singles wouldn't be streamed..

I know, should have phrased it better. I meant she'll earn more weeks at No. 1, although they'll be non-consecutive.

Sadly, I think her run is about done.
January 20: Fall Out Boy - for sure #1 January 27: Fifth Harmony - most likely #1, could be close though. February 3: (Super Bowl) + Bob Dylan, Kid Ink - Maybe Katy Perry will be #1 with her performance but that could spill into next week. February 10: (Grammys) ??? - Anything goes here... February 17: (Valentine's) Imagine Dragons February 24: Kid Rock March 3: Modest Mouse??

March 10: Madonna
And anybody could announce an album coming short notice (cough *Rihanna* cough). Beyonce, J. Cole, and D'Angelo have all shown that if you have a dedicated fan base and a strong record, you can pull big numbers with no traditional promo.

Why would Katy Perry be no1 on the albums chart? Is she releasing something?

This is why older titles have different stats on this chart than their comparative listing on the BB200

I would imagine TEA/SEA for metal/rock albums are pretty low anyway, so glad they give us figures from the lower reaches of TAS.
How much have Foo Fighters sold total now?

Sadly, I think her run is about done. January 20: Fall Out Boy - for sure #1 January 27: Fifth Harmony - most likely #1, could be close though. February 3: (Super Bowl) + Bob Dylan, Kid Ink - Maybe Katy Perry will be #1 with her performance but that could spill into next week. February 10: (Grammys) ??? - Anything goes here... February 17: (Valentine's) Imagine Dragons February 24: Kid Rock March 3: Modest Mouse?? Why would Katy Perry be no1 on the albums chart? Is she releasing something? She's performing for 110 million people so retailers will probably have huge discounts on her music and there could be a rocketing of her albums in terms of streaming and/or sales for older releases that allow it to re-enter the charts. It is unlikely, but her discography will still do some damage that week.

Am I the only one that hates the new Billboard 200? It's getting more ridiculous each week. I understand the need for it due to declining album sales but there has to be some fairness to those Christian, hard rock and alternative albums that sell/stream less songs. Only the pop/rap/r-and-b/(certain) country albums seem to benefit from the new rule, and this isn't fair to the Christian and metal albums, which probably won't get a BB200 #1 in this day and age anymore. Also, the album below is NOT on the Billboard 200, which is really ridiculous considering it's in the Top Album Sales chart.
TAS 1/24
This Week Last Week Two Weeks Ago Weeks Title, Artist Peak
96 0 Re-Entry 8 Metamodern Sounds In Country Music, Sturgill Simpson 59
Meanwhile on the Billboard 200 we have these albums that sell NOTHING but clog up the chart (I'm emphasising to prove a point):
BB200 1/14
This Week Last Week Two Weeks Ago Weeks Title, Artist Peak
42 34 45 37 Talk Dirty, Jason Derulo 4 51 61 80 15 Queen Of The Clouds, Tove Lo 14 68 88 121 65 Nothing Was The Same, Drake 1 74 72 83 4 I LOVE MAKONNEN (EP), I LOVE MAKONNEN 72 85 70 82 58 Midnight Memories, One Direction 1 107 87 177 16 Don't Kill The Magic, MAGIC! 6 108 136 171 45 Trilogy, The Weeknd 4 114 138 194 97 Take Care, Drake 1 118 112 186 5 Black Star Elephant, Nico & Vinz 45 126 113 146 38 Oxymoron, ScHoolboy Q 1 133 54 96 5 Prayer, Robin Schulz 54 138 168 – 76 Halcyon, Ellie Goulding 9 145 133 165 34 Testimony, August Alsina 2 155 124 136 5 Shmurda She Wrote (EP), Bobby Shmurda 79 160 170 – 19 A.M., Chris Young 3 163 149 – 48 Bangerz, Miley Cyrus 1 164 144 – 36 Sex And Love, Enrique Iglesias 8 172 167 – 50 The 20/20 Experience (2 Of 2), Justin Timberlake 1 173 155 176 16 Talking Dreams, Echosmith 109 177 160 – 11 Gypsy Heart, Colbie Caillat 17 184 0 Re-Entry 82 Man On The Moon: The End Of Day, Kid Cudi 4 186 194 – 6 People Keep Talking, Hoodie Allen 8 191 187 – 88 The Heist, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis 2 193 178 – 20 Settle, Disclosure 36 200 162 190 71 Take Me Home, One Direction 1
As you can see, there are 25 albums on the Billboard 200 , not including catalog albums that I didn't list (usually greatest hits compilations), that could be freed for albums such as the Sturgill Simpson album mentioned earlier, Linkin Park's "The Hunting Party", Jack White's "Lazaretto" and Royal Blood's self-titled album, which are all charting on the genre album charts.
But like I said earlier, I understand the need for the change.
However, can they at least expand the Top Album Sales and Top Current Albums chart back to 200 positions to provide us the data for the TOP-SELLING albums (not the most popular albums). Or keep the old method and use the new method for a separate chart.
Really, the new Billboard 200 is unfair.

How is it unfair to genres that are naturally less popular?

I also think it's a slow period so we are going to have a lot of Catalog albums on the BB200 until album releases pick up.

How was it more fair when Ariana Grande was being streamed at insane levels and her album was at like number 90 when a Christian album that sold 20k one week and dropped off the next was #5?
