This was the first single from his debut album, "Room for Squares," released in 2002. I don't listen to this one much anymore, but it's not bad. The chorus has a really catchy melody. It peaked at #13 on the Hot 100, and is his only song to go to top 10 at CHR/Pop, peaking at #9.

I like it, but it's not among my favorites by him.

It's okay. Most of John's better songs were never singles. He had college campus buzz going into his debut era and his most "famous" songs prior to his mainstream breakout were "Back To You," "My Stupid Mouth," and "Neon." I'd have assumed one of those three would have launched his career rather than this- especially since all DID appear on his debut- but they chose something with more mother-daughter appeal instead, which set the tone for the rest of his career.
Really shocked that he only had one top 10 at Pop (and zero on the Hot 100?). Love him, hate him, feel indifferently... but he's a good example of an artist who's hits have way more familiarity than chart peaks would lead you to believe.

This is still a favourite of mine. Great introduction to John and his career.

I remember seeing the video sometime very early on in 2002 and thinking it was a cool tune. It quickly became a favorite. But as much as I liked the song, it could never have prepared me for the impact that that album had on my life. This song and album changed what I thought pop music could be.
I didn't end up getting the album until later that summer but I listened to it every day for probably a year. As a 14/15 year old kid, songs like "Neon" and "City Love" made me look forward the things I might experience in my 20s...and did experience. Musically I felt I had never heard chords like that before...and also never that many chords and riffs in single songs before. I tried to learn "No Such Thing" on guitar but I never could hack it. Still can't. Never even attempted "Why Georgia" or "Neon."
John Mayer has turned out to be my favorite artist of all time. He did the unthinkable in challenging the Beatles for that title. His first 4 albums are all masterpieces for me and is still putting out great songs. Room For Squares is my favorite album of all time and "No Such Thing" is what started it all.
