Jay Z has been calling his fans personally and thanking them for using his new music streaming service Business InsiderJay Z has been taking a unique approach to customer service for his music streaming service Tidal. Tidal executive Vania Schlogel told Business Insider that Jay Z has been personally calling people who use the site.Schlogel said that "he called some of his fans and one of them made the funniest comment. He said 'This is the best customer service call I’ve ever received!'" But it isn't just Jay Z who has been calling Tidal subscribers. Jack White and several other high-profile musicians have also been calling their fans up to talk.Musicians involved in Tidal are given their own accounts on the site which they can use to monitor who listens to their music, and to see statistics about how their albums are performing. Schlogel says that part of that system is the ability to see contact information of users so that musicians can get in touch with them directly.Jay Z has been playing a big role in the development of Tidal, which he acquired for $56 million in March. Parent company Aspiro operated two different streaming services: WiMP and Tidal, but they have been combined into a single product. Schlogel says that Jay Z is "very deeply involved, and the reason being is because this is a life project for him." She went on to say that "he works every day" on the site.

Mumford and Sons and Ben Gibbard (from Death Cab for Cutie) have spoken out against this service publicly. They better lock their doors, sprinkle holy water around their property and pray their pets and children don't disappear into the night... I'm afraid is already too late for them... The "declaration" has been signed. They will hunt them down one by one in the middle of the night....

So since Jay-Z wants to release old bullsh!t, can Alicia Keys finally give us that "Put It In a Love Song" video since she signed her blood on that contract too.

Why does Madonna get to see my phone number and billing address just because I listened to one of her songs?

All I have to say about this is that Britney Spears is not involved. Remember this when 'Pretty Girls' is released on May 5th.

This is kind of a super FLOP.
- the Tidal app peaked at No. 83 on April 7. it has already fallen out of the top 750 on the Apple App Store.
- it currently sits at No. 45 in the music app category, behind Rdio.
- Jay Z told Complex Mag that "Tidal artists haven't been "as creative as possible" in making exclusive content for the service."
- Kanye has deleted all of his Tidal tweets, and has even changed his avi back to the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy picture.

I don't stream music but I don't really get why everyone on Twitter acts like Tidal made them broke and killed their pet. The thing about that 19.99 option is that it's an option...and there is also an additional option of paying 9.99 so I don't understand how people are still working themselves into an outrage about this.

The outrage is that they marketed themselves as "a fair compensation model for artists" but they had 9 (correct me if im wrong) artists worth over a combined billion dollars as the face of the company. They don't have any exclusive content that Spotify doesn't have and their HD audio is negligible compared to other streaming services. The marketing behind this was all wrong. I wish they were a public company so I could dig into their financial statements but thank god Sprint saved their ass.

Exactly. Seems to me the only reason the company is now valued at $250M compared to the initial $56M is due to the big names attached to company as equal stakeholders. There's no way they're getting any profit, at least not at this point.

Yeah, exactly. Their marketing message is that by supporting TIDAL we're making sure Jay-Z or Madonna earn an extra cent or two per stream. Am I interested in helping the obscenely rich get richer off of my dime? Now, if they had new or struggling musicians receive a higher percentage of profit compared to what they'd receive from Spotify or compared to the multiplatinum stars on TIDAL, then maybe I'd buy the social justice angle.

This whole thing is reminding me of when most of the upper level executives were surprised that people were willing to download low-quality recordings for free versus paying for higher quality audio when Napster first popped up.
Their collective inability to acknowledge (that have to at least see this, they're not that stupid) that most people don't care about quality that much and are more than satisfied with the free spotify quality is making them look like fools. It was a bad idea to market this as any sort of optimal medium for the general public. It would have done better with an upscale launch aimed at a specific subset, who would actually care about all these exclusives they're badly hyping up, but as it stands it's offering something that is not wanted by whom they're aiming at.
