#1 song in 1991 from Garth Brooks's No Fences album. This has always been my favorite song of his. The instrumentation and melody are amazing and match the lyrics brilliantly.

Out of all the artists to score four #1s from an album, Garth Brooks did it the fastest with his No Fences CD. Friends In Low Places was #1 in October, 1990 while The Thunder Rolls hit the top in June, 1991. In between were Unanswered Prayers and Two Of A Kind, Workin' On A Full House. Here's the chart where The Thunder Rolls was #1:
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING JUNE 22, 1991: 1. THE THUNDER ROLLS-GARTH BROOKS-CAPITOL 2. If The Devil Danced In Empty Pockets-Joe Diffie-Epic 3. We Both Walk-Lorrie Morgan-RCA 4. Don't Rock The Jukebox-Alan Jackson-Arista 5. Point Of Light-Randy Travis-Warner Bros. 6. One Hundred And Two-the Judds-RCA 7. Meet In The Middle-Diamond Rio-Arista 8. One More Payment-Clint Black-RCA 9. Lucky Moon-Oak Ridge Boys-RCA 10. In A Different Light-Doug Stone-Epic

Great, great song. Love it. It's fun to sing, too.

I once picked this song to play in a Denny's jukebox when I was a kid and when I got back to my booth, the song for some reason was absurdly loud when it came on. Everyone was upset with the staff how loud the sound system was and I slinked in my seat hoping no one knew it was me who picked the song. Lol

This brings back a lot of nostalgia. It was one of my favorites growing up. I can't say it's my favorite from him (or that I love it as much as I used to), but I still enjoy it.

One of my favourite Garth songs. This is the type of country music I miss - well written story songs.

It was originally recorded by Tanya Tucker. Her version is great, but it really is Garth's song. Her version includes that third verse that Garth's orginal doesn't, but he has since added it back in during concerts.
