Taylor Swift's '1989' Scores Milestone 10th Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart
Taylor Swift's 1989 album returns to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for a milestone 10th nonconsecutive week, making Swift just the second woman in history to earn two albums with at least 10 weeks atop the list.
Swift previously logged 11 weeks at No. 1 with her second album, Fearless, in 2008 and 2009. (She has two further No. 1s: Speak Now, with six weeks at No. 1, and Red, with seven weeks in the penthouse.)
Taylor Swift Shares Her Grammy Plans
1989 steps back to No. 1 (rising 2-1) with 101,000 equivalent album units earned (down 15 percent) in the week ending Feb. 1, according to Nielsen Music. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Swift follows Whitney Houston as the only woman with multiple albums with 10 weeks at No. 1. Houston managed the feat three times: with her self-titled debut (14 weeks in 1986), her second album, Whitney (11 weeks in 1987) and The Bodyguard soundtrack (20 weeks in 1992 and 1993).
In total, only seven acts have claimed more than one album with 10 weeks at No. 1: Swift, Houston, The Beatles (with four), The Kingston Trio (three), Henry Mancini (two), The Monkees (two) and Elvis Presley (three).
Katy Perry Set to Perform at Grammys: Exclusive
1989's climb back to the top was powered by 71,000 in pure album sales (down 13 percent). The set also spends a 10th week at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart. This is the first time the top selling album of the week has dipped below 100,000 copies since last September, when Lecrae's Anomaly bowed atop the chart with 88,000 sold in the week ending Sept. 14, 2014. 1989's latest sales frame is the lowest for the week's top seller since the week of July 13, 2014, when Sia's 1000 Forms of Fear launched at No. 1 with 52,000.
As for the rest of the new Billboard 200 chart's top 10, Meghan Trainor's Title is stationary at No. 3 (68,000 units; down 21 percent) while Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour climbs 9-4 (60,000 units; up 18 percent).
Below Smith is the only debut in the top 10, and it comes from another man named Smith: Ne-Yo (whose birth name is Shaffer Smith). Ne-Yo's Non-Fiction opens at No. 5 with 59,000 units, with 82 percent of its total coming from traditional album sales. Non-Fiction is Ne-Yo's sixth consecutive top 10 album in as many tries. Ne-Yo's hot streak began with his debut album, In My Own Words, which bowed at No. 1 in 2006. He followed it up with Because of You (No. 1 in 2007), Year of the Gentleman (No. 2, 2008), Libra Scale (No. 9, 2010), R.E.D. (No. 4, 2012) and now Non-Fiction (No. 5).
Spotify Predicts Sia, Pharrell Will Win Grammys
Last week's No. 1, Fall Out Boy's American Beauty/American Psycho, falls to No. 6 in its second week with 55,000 units (down 75 percent).
Mark Ronson's Uptown Special rises 10-7 with 49,000 units (up 1 percent), bolstered by TEA, which comprise 75 percent of the album's units for the week (courtesy of Uptown Special's red-hot single "Uptown Funk!" -- it sold 365,000 downloads in the latest tracking week).
Nicki Minaj's The Pinkprint dips 6-8 with 48,000 units (down 10 percent). Of its unit total for the week, 58 percent are from TEA and SEA.
Rounding out the top 10 are Maroon 5's V (11-9 with 43,000 units; down 9 percent) and the 2015 Grammy Nominees compilation album (12-10 in its second week, with 34,000 units; down 24 percent). It is the 14th Grammy Nominees album to reach the top 10.

So annoyed with this "not posting the pure sales for all albums and being bad at math so we can't trust it when they post percentages" thing.
I know Billboard is trying to send the message that pure sales figures don't matter anymore, but they clearly still do (the key milestones related to 1989 have all been based on pure sales, not consumption units).

^Paul Grein has been giving us the pure album sales the past few weeks. His sales articles are much better than Billboard's.
Each week Billboard gets shittier and shittier. Something is up!
EDIT:
Keith forgot Ed Sheeran's x which is #2 this week!
EDIT:
They added it
As for the rest of the new Billboard 200 chart's top 10, Ed Sheeran's x rises 4-2 with 74,000 units (down 2 percent)

I don't think it is reasonable to expect Billboard to give sales/streaming breakdowns of each album forever, they did do it during the transition period but going forward, it is the total units that matter for this chart, not just the sales.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6458517/katy-perry-missy-elliott-super-bowl-sales-bump Katy Perry & Missy Elliott See Super Sales Bump Thanks to Super BowlBy Keith Caulfield | February 04, 2015 8:13 PM EST Plus: Lenny Kravitz's catalog of albums & digital songs rises by 111 percent Thanks to Katy Perry's Super Bowl halftime show, both she and guest star Missy Elliott earned some sizzling sales gains. In the week ending Feb. 1 -- the day of the big game -- Perry's albums and song downloads earned a 92 percent sales gain in the United States, according to Nielsen Music. Elliot, meanwhile, tallied a whopping 996 percent rise. The 2015 Super Bowl halftime show featured nine songs performed by Perry and Elliott (along with another guest star, Lenny Kravitz). Six of Perry's hits were showcased, while Elliott performed three of her own singles. The spectacular was the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show ever, according to Nielsen, with 118.5 million viewers. Let's break down the artists' individual sales for the week: Perry sold a total of 121,000 albums and song downloads in the week ending Feb. 1. Of that figure, 21,000 were albums (up 255 percent compared to 6,000 in the week previous) and 100,000 were song downloads (up 75 percent versus 57,000 in the previous frame). Elliott sold a combined 73,000 albums and song downloads for the week. Of that figure, 2,000 were albums (up 2,546 percent compared to a negligible total in the previous week) and 71,000 were song downloads (up 978 percent versus 7,000 in the previous frame). In terms of specific albums and songs from this year's two main halftime performers, the biggest-selling album of the Feb. 1 week was Perry's most recent release, Prism. It sold 9,000 copies (up 146 percent) and climbs 85-35 on the Top Album Sales chart dated Feb. 14. Perry also re-enters the chart with her two earlier albums: Teenage Dream (No. 38 with 8,000; up 527 percent) and One of the Boys (No. 75 with 4,000; up 263 percent). On the Billboard 200 chart, which ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, Prism flies 57-28 with 16,000 album equivalent units earned in the week (up 85 percent). Teenage Dream zips 152-33 (14,000 units; up 223 percent) and One of the Boys re-enters at No. 113 (5,000 units; up 204 percent). Perry's top-selling song of the Feb. 1 week was her halftime-opening tune "Roar," which sold just over 17,000 downloads. Two of Elliott's songs actually outsold "Roar," as "Work It" shifted 21,000 downloads (up 1,861 percent) and "Get Ur Freak On" moved 19,000 downloads (up 1,625 percent). The third song Elliott performed during halftime, "Lose Control," sold 17,000 (up 1,775 percent). What about Kravitz? He had a gain in sales as well. His catalog of albums and digital songs rose by 111 percent (11,000 for the week, as compared to 5,000 the week previous). He shifted 2,000 in album sales (up 154 percent) and nearly 9,000 in song downloads (up 102 percent). All three of Elliott's halftime-performed tunes debut on the Rap Digital Songs chart. "Work It," "Get Ur Freak On" and "Lose Control" arrive at Nos. 11, 13 and 15, respectively. (Why do the songs debut on the chart, even though they are quite old? The Rap Digital Songs chart launched in January 2010, years after those songs were released and were hits.) Finally, on the latest Social 50 chart -- which ranks the most popular artists of the week across social networks -- Perry zooms 6-2. It is her highest rank on the tally since the Nov. 16, 2013-dated chart, when she also was at No. 2. Elliott does not appear on the latest Social 50 but could see a rise onto the list next week, following a full week of activity post-game. Speaking of further impact next week, both Perry and Elliott could see additional sales increases once the first week of sales have been registered after the game. Next week's charts will reflect the week ending Feb. 8.

I don't think it is reasonable to expect Billboard to give sales/streaming breakdowns of each album forever, they did do it during the transition period but going forward, it is the total units that matter for this chart, not just the sales. And I don't think it's unreasonable for us to expect Billboard to give us accurate information. It's 4 extra words per album. Typing "??,000 pure album sales" takes 10 seconds. Paul Grein has not put up his article yet. He's probably busy with The Grammys this week. It's kind of sad that a former employee of Billboard writes a better Billboard 200 article than a current Billboard employee!

Hello. I am brand new to these discussion boards. Let me first apologize if this isn't the most appropriate board, however the Billboard 200 Album Archives board hasn't seen any activity in several months. I am interesting in finding complete weekly Billboard Album charts from 1970 - 1983. I realize that there are bits and pieces of this information scattered, including Google Books, Billboard.biz, Barry Kowal, Ultimate Music Database, etc. However, I have yet to find the complete weekly charts, positions 1 - 200. I would appreciate knowing if this information is available and accessible. I have complete Billboard 200 charts from 1984 - 2014, which I am willing to share in exchange.
Thank you, Mike

I agree about Born to Die, but how is Born to Die outliving Ultraviolence, when Ultraviolence was released about 6 months ago and Born to Die is over 2 years old...it happened in other countries
Is it lack of single support for Ultraviolence while Born to Die had Summertime Sadness?

It might have come too soon and not have a special hit to boost it. Ultraviolence is better album imo but Born to Die is what Lana is all about for general public and hits seem to be timeless, just like Adele's (of course in smaller scale)
Debut albums often outlive the second ones. Ultraviolence is still doing ok-ish, charting comfortably and it was in top 100 not so long time ago.

BTD has a cult following. "Summertime Sadness" (remix) isn't what's selling the album.

I think Born to die singles are way more recognizable than Ultraviolence one, the atrocious remix of Summertime sadness had mainstream success but most of singles of that album are the first to come to mind when people think of Lana (maybe with Young and beautiful). With Ultraviolence i think there's a sense of expectatives, Ultraviolence blocket In the lonely hour from being number one, and there's a sense that it should be bigger, but in the end the album is doing well. Hopefully next time Lana will have a more radio friendly single to release and of course the label support sending it to radio, because what happened with Young and beautiful was a real waste

God, Taylor really is a sales beast, isn't she? It amazes me that, five albums in, she's more popular than ever. Who would have thought back in 2006, when her debut was released, that she'd be the biggest thing in music just years later? Crazy. Hopefully next time Lana will have a more radio friendly single to release and of course the label support sending it to radio, because what happened with Young and beautiful was a real waste Well, she did say that the next album is going to be much closer in sound to Born to Die than Ultraviolence, so that's promising in terms of commercial success. I just hope the label doesn't remix the singles for release here, à la 'Summertime Sadness' and 'Young & Beautiful'; either put out the actual song, or don't bother. There are several songs on BtD that could have done reasonably well - without remixes - had they been promoted to radio.

I don't have a problem with remixes if they respect the original spirit of the song like Missing or You're not alone in the nineties, or recently Waves or Prayer in C. When the remix ends being an accelerated version of the song, modifies the voice of the singer (hello Habits) or gives a totally different vibe is another history. It could be good for dance clubs but not for radio.
Radio sometimes is incredibly conservative with what it plays, now it seems absurd but Adele had a very similar sound during her first era and radio didn't play her songs, and i remember well people expected something similar to happen with Rolling in the deep. Now there's more variety in the sound that some years ago, and even recognizing that Lana is very far from the usual standards of songs radio play, some of them could perfectly work if they give it a try.
There was really good buzz surrounding Lana before the release of Born to die, unfortunately that SNL performance didn't give her any favours. The good thing is the album was so good that it was able to recover from that

Ten years later, I'll say they are doing great. FOUR other labels are in the Big Machine family: Valory, Republic Nashville, Dot, and Nash Icon.

Ultraviolence only spent 19 weeks in the top 100 - that's a huge underperformance compared to Born To Die which spent 136 weeks in the top 100. And the fact that Born to Die is in the top 100 now and Ultraviolence just makes me wonder, what is it about Born To Die that's causing it to outlive Ultraviolence?
I get that earlier albums can outlive later ones, but happens only years after both albums are released, Ultraviolence is still current and was just released last year, so it's weird how it disappeared so fast.
I wasn't expecting longevity like Born To Die, but it didn't even have a fraction of that longevity.
