Hello everyone,
I think the relationship between Latin America and country music is an interesting one and I admire a number of the Hispanic artists who sing country, both in Spanish and in English. Recent favourites include 8 Segundos and Linda Bandry. What are people's views on this subject?

Some Latin genres are described as "Latin country music." Latin folk singer "Mercedes Sosa" is one of my favorite artists. There are also some similarities that I don't like. Both country and Latin are heavily male dominated. The Latin pop market is pretty much all male. The only big female acts are Shakira, Thalia & Paulina. Look at this weeks chart. Shakira is the only female in the top 25! www.billboard.com/charts/latin-songs1) Male group ft. Shakira 2) Male 3) Male 4) Male 5) Male 6) Male 7) Male ft. Yes, although I was thinking more of what we would term 'country music' in the English-speaking world... An increasing number of Hispanics are singing the type of traditional country music that originated in the southern United States - Johnny Rodriguez, Freddy Fender and Rick Treviño have been the most obvious examples over the years, although recent additions have actually come from Mexico (8 Segundos, Sergio Abundis) and even as far away as Venezuela (Linda Bandry). As for hopes of a Hispanic artist achieving fame in modern country, those hopes perhaps lie with Sammy Arriaga, a singer of Cuban parentage: www.youtube.com/watch?v=93MYUKPX37Q
