Imagine Dragons Slay at No. 1 on Billboard 200 ChartThe band earns its first No. 1 album with 'Smoke + Mirrors.' Imagine Dragons earns its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as the rock band's Smoke + Mirrors debuts in the top slot. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Smoke + Mirrors was released on Feb. 17 through KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records, and moved 195,000 units in the week ending Feb. 22, according to Nielsen Music. Pure album sales comprised 89 percent (or 172,000) of that figure. That 172,000 sum is easily the group's biggest sales week yet, more than doubling their previous best -- 83,000 -- registered when their first full-length album, Night Visions, debuted and peaked at No. 2 in its first frame. So far, Night Visions has sold 2.5 million copies to date, and has never left the Billboard 200 chart since its debut 129 weeks ago. (It's only spent two weeks outside of the top 100, too.) Night Visions spawned three top 20 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: "It's Time" (peaking at No. 15), "Radioactive" (No. 3) and "Demons" (No. 6). Of those, "Radioactive" also hit No. 1 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart (spending 13 weeks atop the list). The band's new album was led by the single "I Bet My Life," which reached No. 3 on the Alternative tally. Smoke + Mirrors is the lone debut in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, as the next highest new entry is found at No. 14, where Aaron Watson's Underdog starts with 28,000 units. Last week's No. 1, Drake's surprise release If You're Reading This It's Too Late, falls to No. 2 with 187,000 units (down 65 percent). It has sold 624,000 copies since its release (equating to a little more than 10 days on sale). Meanwhile, the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack also falls one rung to No. 3 in its second week on the chart, moving 165,000 units (down 36 percent). The top three titles on the Billboard 200 are distributed by Universal Music Group Distribution for a second consecutive week -- the first time a company has done so in nearly three years. The last time it happened was on the charts dated June 2 and June 9, 2012, when Sony Music Distribution claimed the top three. Taylor Swift's 1989 climbs 5-4 with 93,000 units (down 26 percent) and Ed Sheeran's x descends 4-5 with 81,000 units (down 42 percent). Many of the titles on the chart -- like Sheeran's -- are adjusting back to normal sales patterns (and thus decline in units) following gains earned in the week previous by exposure from the Grammy Awards (Feb. 8). Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour falls 3-6 with 72,000 units (down 56 percent), Maroon 5's V is up 10-7 with 47,000 units (its highest rank since it was No. 7 on the Oct. 18, 2014-dated chart -- though it's down by 26 percent), and Meghan Trainor's Title drops 6-8 with 44,000 units (down 29 percent). After a brief dip outside of the top 10, Nicki Minaj's The Pinkprint returns to the region (12-9 with 41,000 units; down 15 percent), and Hozier's self-titled album also climbs back into the top 10 (11-10 with 40,000; down 33 percent). www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6480541/imagine-dragons-no-1-billboard-200-chart

Good to see another album debut on top, with decent numbers. Though would be welcome if Billboard reported the total album sales for the week.

www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.32706/title.hip-hop-album-sales-drake-nicki-minaj-j-cole-2Hip Hop Album Sales: Drake, Nicki Minaj, J. Coleby Jay Balfour posted Wednesday February 25, 2015 at 10:00AM PST | 3 comments Drake falls to #2 but breaks Gold in the second week since his album was released. The Billboard 200 has a new #1, as Imagine Dragons have knocked Drake's latest album down to the runner-up position. The latest sales report still brings good news for the Toronto rapper as Drake has passed the required numbers for a Gold album certification, adding on another 129,000 sales this period. At the same time, Drake's fellow Young Money superstar Nicki Minaj made her way back into the Top 10 after falling to #12 last week. Lower down the list, J. Cole holds on tight at #16, Ne-Yo sees a three-spot boost and Rae Sremmurd gain back 10 spots from last week's dip. Drake Breaks Gold, Falls To #2 After his surprise release propelled him to the top of the charts last week, Drake's If Youre Reading This Its Too Late officially broke the Gold record milestone with his latest sales report. The album, which has raised questions about Drake's current status at Cash Money, sold another 129,118 units as of Sunday (February 22). The latest numbers push Drake well over the half-a-million mark with 623,864 albums sold in a span of less than two weeks. Meanwhile, Drake's streaming numbers are far and away the highest on the charts with more than three times the streams of the closest runner-up. In the same sales period, Drake pushed more than 260,000 single song sales from the album. Nicki Minaj Reenters The Top 10 Following a single week outside of the Top 10, Nicki Minaj is back up to #9 despite putting up less impressive numbers than last week. Minaj finally saw her album push past the Gold certification last week and put up another 16,726 album sales over the most recent sales period. The new numbers bring the The Pinkprint's total to 525,748 albums sold since its release late in 2014. J. Cole Stays Steady At #16 While he seems to have fallen out of the Top 10 for good, J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive held on to its #16 spot for another week with just over 17,000 albums sold. Now with 785,477 copies of his third album out the door, Cole saw the project streamed more than 6.5 million times over the past week. nielsen.tumblr.com/Music SalesDespite a new number one debut, overall album sales are down 22% over last week’s post-Grammy week sales gains, and down 4% over the same week last year. Year-to-date album sales are flat over the same period in 2014. Physical CD sales are down 22% over last week, down 17% over the same week last year and down 7% year-to-date over 2014. Digital album sales are down 23% over last week, up 9% over the same week last year and up 4% year-to-date over 2014. Imagine Dragons’ sophomore album “Smoke + Mirrors” debuts at number one on the Top Albums chart with 172,000 units sold. It is their first chart-topping album and more than doubles their previous best one week sales total. Their 2012 debut album “Night Visions” peaked at No. 2 and leaps 68-24 in its 129th week on the chart, posting a 52% sales increase. Two other albums post sales totals over 100,000 units this week. Sia's current cd is holding up very well since it's jump after The "Elastic Heart" video and the Grammy's jump. Too bad she didn't receive more airplay for "Elastic Heart".

www.metalinsider.net/columns/metal-by-numbers/metal-by-numbers-226-the-way-of-the-crazy-fist Metal By Numbers 2/26: The way of the crazy fistPosted by Matt Brown Notable Debuts: 36 Crazyfists, Time and Trauma (Spinefarm) #80, 3,525 sold With its first studio release in five years, 36 Crazyfists has nabbed its best debut yet. Sumac, The Deal (Profound Lore) 570 sold Aaron Turner’s latest project in his post-Isis career gets its debut. Like a Storm, Awaken The Fire (Century Media) 270 sold I have no idea who these guys are but they’re classified as hard rock/alt metal and they’re on Century Media. These numbers are also early and so aren’t considered the band’s actual debut. Notable Sales:AC/DC, Rock or Bust (Columbia) #30, 8,000 sold A 45% drop with over 485,000 sold. They’ll have another in a long line of gold albums in less than three weeks. Marilyn Manson, The Pale Emperor (Loma Vista) #54, 4,975 sold A 32% drop isn’t so merry-lyn (was that too much of a stretch?). Slipknot, .5: The Grey Chapter (Roadrunner) #83, 3,450 sold A 28% drop, but this is close to the 300,000 mark. Foo Fighters, Sonic Highways (RCA) #90, 3,150 sold A 30% drop in week 15. Papa Roach, F.E.A.R. (Eleven Seven) #110, 2,675 sold I’m afraid this took a 32% drop. In This Moment, Black Widow (Atlantic) #156, 1,975 sold Over 90,000 copies sold.

It's the second-biggest selling album of 2015, behind Taylor Swift's 1989, with 753,000 copies sold. --Imagine Dragons, Night Visions - No. 20 -- The promotion and publicity generated by the arrival of the band's new album Smoke + Mirrors spurs a big 46-20 gain for their last album, Night Visions. It rises to 18,000 units for the week (up 39 percent). The album last ranked higher on the June 7, 2014-dated chart, when it was No. 15. --Stevie Wonder, The Definitive Collection - No. 40 -- Following the CBS TV special Stevie Wonder: Songs In the Key Of Life -- An All-Star Grammy Salute (which aired Feb. 16), this greatest hits set from the legend zooms back onto the chart with 11,000 units (up 205 percent). It sold nearly 7,000 copies for the week (up 260 percent). Wonder was last in the top 40 of the chart on the list dated Nov. 19, 2005, when his last studio album, A Time To Love, fell 13-30 in its third week on the chart. (It debuted at No. 5.) In addition, Songs in the Key of Life (the album name-checked in the title of the special -- and celebrated on the show) returns to the Billboard 200 at No. 48 with 10,000 units (up 223 percent). It also sold almost 7,000 copies for the week (up 223 percent as well). It's the highest rank for the album -- which spent 14 weeks at No. 1 in 1976 and 1977 -- since the Aug. 27, 1977-dated chart (when it also placed at No. 48). --Soundtrack, Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me - No. 147 -- The soundtrack to the film about Glen Campbell debuts following its exposure on the Academy Awards (which aired Feb. 22 on ABC). The album's "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" was nominated for best original song on the Oscars, and was performed on the show by Tim McGraw. The set arrives with just over 4,000 units (up from a negligible figure the week previous) and sold 3,000 copies (up again from basically nothing).
