"Six figure bows" is so pointlessly vague. That could mean 100k or 199k, and I don't see the use of playing coy when they're going to reveal numbers in a few hours anyway.

Nowhere does it say that all three will be close in sales... "The race will be tight" is the exact phrase. I suppose that is open to interpretation. Rather than go further with that, I deleted my post. Please continue.

^I think that is just their opinion.
We will find out in a few hours!
I think Empire might be more of a contender than 50 Shades.
It's a hot 1st Quarter!

Its (s)HITS lol and I only say that cause they always create drama and vagueness to generate more traffic. Like some have said, let's just see what's up in a few hours but don't be at all surprised if they pull their usual textbook 'solid 3 way race/ too close and soon to know etc..' and leave it at that :#.

Madonna's current iTunes ranking is irrelevant, as she had already sold 60,000 preorders as of two months ago and those are obviously not reflected in the current position.
HDD is playing coy for click bait.

Her current ranking is irrelevant? Not really. It just means she frontloaded preorders and actual first week sales are not great. Her second week is going to be brutal, IMO.

^Perhaps not, with some redemptions and benefit of appearing/performing on the Ellen show all week. Anything comfortably better than an 86.7% decline will be fine. Pre-orders are part of "actual" first-week sales. The current iTunes ranking of No. 4 is perfectly fine, with no big hit driving it.

Of course (like anyone else/a mega star) there's going to be and always be the frontloaded factor but he already has 60K+ in the bag plus whatever she sells this week digitally PLUS physical CDs and also from the ticket bundles. Not saying for sure she's getting #1 but how on earth did they not know who she was up against and what it needed to take to get her #1? Her team sucks more so than not ESP. w/ single releases, leaks etc..but for whatever the reason they've been almost flawless w/ album releases and dates. I'm sure they knew she'd easily beat Kelly Clarkson but also knew she would've lost in the UK to Noel Gallagher so they looked at the whole picture and went w/ this week.

Good points but have no freakin idea why she didn't just do the promo she's doing NEXT week *this* week . Same thing applies to the UK. She has a major interview but it's not until late Saturday (useless for 1st week sales).

Saying her first week sales aren't great is a bit perplexing as the album became available two months ago, the earliest a preorder ever went live on iTunes. Why would it be different if those initial 60,000 occurred this week?

and she had EVERY right to since the damn thing was leaking like Niagara Falls! Obviously, if it was first released this week she'd be a solid #1 on the iTunes chart this second and/or most of the week! It's all visuals not what the actual final album sales will be. The fact she's at #4 and either holding steady or rising (mixed in w/ everything else) is a very good sign. I'm sure the difference between #1-#4 isn't massive. And last I heard, Luke Bryan has no preorder sales so she should have a major advantage. Fingers crossed.

I was wrong: hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=295017YOUR NEW RELEASESIt’s another battle for #1 on our SPS chart next week as Madonna and the Empire soundtrack lock horns. We’re giving the upside today to the Empire soundtrack as this week’s episode featuring Jennifer Hudson and Mary J. Blige has yet to air and our projection is likely to increase in the next few days. Madonna should lead the album chart at 100-110k. Here are this week’s key debuts: Empire (Turn First/Columbia) 115-125k (90-100k sales) Madonna (Live Nation/Interscope) 115-125k (100-110k sales) Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville) 95-105k (85-95k sales)

Now this would be an upset. Madonna's numbers are a bit disappointing. I assumed she'd trek closer to 150k, but at the end of the day there's not much pushing this beyond her name and the leak hype. But yes, this is gonna flood the internet this week.

I had said before that the Empire soundtrack could end up challenging. It's attracting 14 million+ viewers now. The digital releases thus far haven't been faring as well as the show, but the addition of a physical component spices things up.
There could be a small amount of RH redemptions in the mix, that may not be reported until the end of week- the first batch of dates went on sale to the general public Monday, and some have reported not even receiving their email link to download as of yet.
Nonetheless, at least it's looking like a week with two titles topping 100K.

well, damn. Kelly (thankfully) just narrowly avoided losing out on a No. 1 album due to the new BB200 methodology...and now it's looking like Madonna (another artist I love) will be the new formula's first real victim (because no1 really cares about NOW being denied a No. 1 album.)
*pout* :(

Tonight's Empire will probably break a 6.0 in the 18-49 for the first time, so the soundtrack could probably soar past 150k in sales by the end of the tracking week.

HDD is playing coy for click bait. Artpop had almost as many iTunes preorders as the 20/20 Experience. That is nothing to go on.

100k for Madonna with no hit single, no huge hype (like Superbowl) and considering her long career, is far from disappointing imo. Celine and Mariah even opened with less than 100k with their last albums. And Britney? With a top 15 hit and after a successful era, her last album barely opened with 100k.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6495224/madonna-vs-empire-billboard-200-number-oneMadonna Vs. 'Empire' For No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums ChartBy Keith Caulfield | March 11, 2015 3:34 PM EDT The Queen of Pop is battling TV's hottest new series for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry forecasters say Madonna's new album, Rebel Heart, and the soundtrack to Fox TV's Empire are both aiming to shift around 125,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 15. The two sets were released on March 10. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Billboard 200's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, March 18. If Madonna opens atop the list, it will mark her ninth No. 1, stretching back to 1984's Like a Virgin. She last led the chart with her previous studio album, 2012's MDNA. (Among all women, Madonna has the second-most No. 1s, behind only Barbra Streisand, with 10.) However, if Empire bows at No. 1, it will be the first TV soundtrack to hit No. 1 since 2010, when Glee, the Music: Journey to Regionals debuted atop the tally (dated June 26, 2010). Like Empire, Glee airs on Fox (at least for two more episodes). Rebel Heart was released through Live Nation/Interscope Records, while the Empire album was issued by 20th Century Fox TV/Columbia Records. Also on tap for a big debut: Luke Bryan's latest spring break-themed album, Spring Break…Checkin' Out. It could move around 100,000 units and possibly debut at No. 3 on the chart, behind Madonna and Empire. Never miss a story. Sign up for the charts newsletter.

This is going to be a nail bitting race. Empire is hot right now, every week the ratings go up, and there's a lot of buzz around the show, the actors and the songs. And they are getting big stars in guess roles
For an album that failed (till now) to have a top 100 hit, Madonna is not doing that bad

Hopefully Madonna pulls through. Shame the "Ellen" promo isn't happening this week.
To the person who mentioned "Britney Jean": Britney did almost zilch promo that week. If she actually gave a damn for her era outside of Vegas, she could have done 150K-200K.
