I know Will Hoge isn't necessarily a Texas Country artist but he's well know throughout the Texas scene. Does anyone have any favorite songs from Will Hoge or suggestions?
Any essential Aaron Watson songs? I'm enjoying his most recent album. I'm also listening to Granger Smith. Is anyone familiar with his music that can add suggestions?
If anyone wants to list their favorite songs by Texas country music artists, that'd be great too!

Will Hoge is amazing. His #7 album is my absolute favorite.
I love love love Wade Bowen, and also really enjoy Reckless Kelly, Mickey and the Motorcars, and Sam Riggs.

I'm still learning about Texas country myself, but I guess I know a good amount. As of now I'm more familiar with the legends and older artists than the newer guys. Here are some songs I would recommend:
Billy Joe Shaver - Low Down Freedom The Flatlanders - Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown Guy Clark - Let Him Roll Jerry Jeff Walker - Sangria Wine Joe Ely - Honky Tonk Masquerade Lyle Lovett - L.A. County Robert Earl Keen - Whenever Kindness Fails Townes Van Zandt - For the Sake of the Song

^ It's just that about 80% of it is about beer, Texas, or drinking beer in Texas.

Any essential Aaron Watson songs? I'm enjoying his most recent album. I'm also listening to Granger Smith. Is anyone familiar with his music that can add suggestions? If anyone wants to list their favorite songs by Texas country music artists, that'd be great too! Aaron Watson Off the Record (feat. Charla Corn) - it's one of my favorites of his, just an amazing break-up song. 3rd Gear & 17 - nice rocking song, perfect to jam out to while driving Blame it on Me - similar in message to Alan Jackson's "Sound You Don't Have to Love Me Anymore", very good song Good Thing Going Hey Y'all (My Contribution to Ruining Country Music Country Song! Ha!) - Just hilarious especially if you ever grew tired of Bro-Country...I mean there's too many hilarious lyrics in that song, "If you like Lynyrd Skynyrd on the radio, let me know and I'll sing you 'Free Bird'/I like Johnny Cash Grand Master Flash/I'm name droppin' like you never heard/I won't try it unless you fry it/put the Crisco in the pan/I love fresh fried red hot hush puppies/I got gravy running down my chin." Off his new album... That Look That's Why God Made Cowboys One of Your Nights Granger Smith So Much About California Don't Listen to the Radio Goodnight Moon Long Way Home Nothing to Prove Miles and Mud Tires I Am the Midnight Silverado Bench Seat If Money Didn't Matter She Was September Colorblind These are just a couple of my favorites, just dig in, go preview the albums on iTunes and you'll find some gems.

Anything is better than the songs on country radio right now. Drinking beer > bro-country in all honesty. I rather hear songs from Aaron Watson or Will Hoge that Florida Georgia Line or Thomas Rhett. I do like mainstream country as well but I have really gotten into Aaron Watson recently and think his new record is fun and serious when appropriate.

He's just awesome! :) Will create an entry in the "Discover/Share Country Artists" thread. Wade Bowen: Agree :) Great artist!

^ It's just that about 80% of it is about beer, Texas, or drinking beer in Texas. Yes , cause drinking beer hasn't been covered in mainstream country at all. That being said , I've only been able to really connect with a few Red Dirt artists & songs here and there. I tend to find a lot of it generic and bland.... and just as close to heartland rock as it is to country. I have meant to explore more Wade Bowen & Will Hoge though. I bought Randy Rogers & Wade Bowen's "Hold My Beer Vol. 1" last night and I love it !!! But I think its more classic country than Red Dirt? If there was more of this stuff (or I'm just missing it) , I would be a die hard fan of the sub genre. Cody Johnsons "A Different Day" is about as close to a perfect country record as you can get as far as I'm concerned. His "Six Strings One Dream" was really good as well but last years "Cowboy Like Me" was pretty generic and boring though.

I love a lot of singer-songwriters from Texas (see my first post in this thread), but I often find music specifically described as "Texas country" and especially "Red Dirt" to be really average and bland, like a version of mainstream country that's slightly more substantive and authentic-sounding but ultimately pretty forgettable. Maybe I just haven't been exposed to the right artists or albums yet. I'm not familiar with Cody Johnson at all, will definitely look into "A Different Day."

I'm pretty sure , we have similar tastes in music. You won't be disappointed. It's worth the price of admission for "Ocean Of Whiskey" alone.

Speaking to Cody Johnson, I found "A Different Day" (the song) to be stellar.

All right, I retract this statement somewhat. I've done some research, and it turns out that in fact I do enjoy a good deal of Texas and Red Dirt artists - I just generally haven't associated them with those terms. I guess I have difficulty keeping track of all the million subgenres country is split into. I do find some of it rather mediocre, but that's true for any area of country music. Here are some more songs Texas/Red Dirt/whatever songs that I like (mentioning different artists than in my first post): Charlie Robison - Down Again Chris Knight - Heart of Stone Cross Canadian Ragweed - Seventeen Dale Watson - Blessed or Damned Hayes Carll - Knockin' Over Whiskeys Jason Boland & The Stragglers - Lonely by Choice Ray Wylie Hubbard - If It's Not Love (We're Just Wasting Time) Ryan Bingham - Snow Falls in June Wayne Hancock - Thunderstorms and Neon Signs

Too bad they're not together anymore, I really enjoyed their output. "Sick And Tired" and "Fightin' For" were great as well.

Can't believe I haven't commented in this thread......
Obviously I'm a huge Steve Earle fan though he's really only FROM Texas instead of "texas-country"
Anyway....I've been really enjoying Aaron Watson and his new album, it's loaded with some filler but it's honestly got like 3 song of the year type of songs on it.
I need to explore Wade Bowen more as well as Randy Rogers Band though I really enjoyed their duet album a lot.
My favorite Texas discovery this year though has been William Clark Green, he's more country-rock than Texas country but his last two albums have been extremely solid and I'm really glad i found out about him!
And though he's from Texas, I also have been enjoying James McMurtry, though his sound is definitely not like the guys I mentioned above lol
