The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The album -- which was initially slated to bow on March 27 but was pushed forward to a March 16 release -- starts with 363,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 22, according to Nielsen Music. The set, which is Lamar’s second full-length major label effort, was released through Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope Records. The album’s title and original release date was only announced on March 11. To Pimp a Butterfly sold 324,000 copies in its first week -- comprising 89 percent of its overall unit total. That 324,000 launch is the second-largest sales week of 2015, behind only the debut frame of Drake’s surprise album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (495,000). Lamar’s last album, 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, debuted and peaked at No. 2, selling 241,000 copies. (It was stuck behind Taylor Swift’s also-arriving Red, which blasted in with 1.21 million.) Last week's No. 1 album, the Empire TV soundtrack, slips to No. 2 in its second week with a very light 16 percent decline to 110,000 units. Its sales also held on well, falling just 19 percent to 89,000 sold. The Fox TV series wrapped its first season on March 18. Rock band Modest Mouse debuts at No. 3 with its new album Strangers To Ourselves, as it bows with 77,000 units. Ninety-five percent of its first week is comprised of traditional album sales ( 73,000). The group's last studio album, 2007's We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, debuted at No. 1 with 129,000 sold. The Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack is steady at No. 4 with 60,000 units (down 16 percent), Taylor Swift's 1989 is also a non-mover at No. 5 with 56,000 (down 10 percent). Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late steps up one rung to No. 6 with 52,000 (down 11 percent) and Ed Sheeran's x rises 8-7 with 49,000 (down 8 percent). Marina and the Diamonds (aka solo singer Marina Diamandis) debuts at No. 8 with Froot, notching her first top 10 album. The set is her third studio effort, and it moved 46,000 units in its first week. Of that figure, 43,000 were pure album sales -- her best sales week ever. She previously visited the Billboard 200 with 2012's Electra Heart (peaking at No. 31) and 2010's The Family Jewels (No. 138). Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour descends 6-9 with 46,000 units (down 24 percent) and Maroon 5's V closes out the top 10, falling one position to No. 10 with 44,000 (down 7 percent).

www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.33107/title.hip-hop-album-sales-kendrick-lamar-empire-drakeHip Hop Album Sales: Kendrick Lamar, "Empire" & Drakeby Jay Balfour posted Wednesday March 25, 2015 at 10:00AM PDT Kendrick Lamar takes over and "Empire" falls to #2. Kendrick Lamar has taken over the chart at #1 with the surprise release of his new album To Pimp A Butterfly. The success of the TDE rapper knocked the soundtrack to Empire's first season down a spot to #2 and Drake made up some lost ground with a climb from #7 to #6. Lower down the list, both Big Sean and Nicki Minaj fell a half dozen spots each in a single week, while J. Cole bottomed out at #28, the lowest spot his 2014 Forest Hills Drive record has seen since its release. Kendrick Lamar Dominates At #1 On top of consecutive single-day stream records on Spotify, Kendrick Lamar officially has the #1 album in the country. To Pimp A Butterfly sold a total of 324,403 copies since it was released, less than the million copies TDE's Top Dawg hoped for last week. The number earns Lamar the second-best first-week sales performance of the year for a Hip Hop album. Drake pushed 494,746 units of If Youre Reading This Its Too Late within a week of his own surprise drop. Still, To Pimp A Butterfly is Lamar's most successful rollout to date. It was streamed nearly 39 million times over the past week and saw single song purchases from the album reach nearly 125,000. In late 2012, Kendrick pushed 241,000 copies of his album good kid m.A.A.d. city in its debut week and passed the million sold milestone more than six months later in 2013. Empire Soundtrack Knocked Off Top Spot Despite a 16% performance drop from the week before, the Empire soundtrack easily outsold Modest Mouse's new album, but fell to #2 at the same time. The soundtrack sold 88,971 albums over the latest sales period, bringing its total count to 198,556. The soundtrack was streamed more than 5.5 million times over the last week as well. Drake Regains Ground A month-and-a-half after its release, If Youre Reading This Its Too Late is still in the Top 10 at #6 this week. Drake's new record stuttered 11% when compared to last week's report, but still sold more than 24,000 copies, bringing its total sales up to 774,420. Despite trailing behind a handful of other albums, Drake's record is the second-best streaming performer on the chart with more than 23.5 million tallied streams. Top 10 Billboard Top 200 Rap & R&B Albums For The Week Ending 03/22/2015Note: The first number below is this week’s “total album equivalent units” count, an intersection of album sales, single sales, and streams implemented by Billboard's new rating system. A pure album sales figure is available in bold in parenthesis and information about each album's streaming count is available in brackets. #1. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't expect higher numbers for Kendrick (thought he'd be past 400k with ease with his hype), but that's not to diminish a terrific start.
Fantastic opening number for Marina as well and Modest Mouse.

No it's not, remember the industry forecasts last year (500-600k)? Drake did much better with same sales from last era.
I'm not saying Kendrick did badly obviously good numbers but I expected 150k more at least. He'll face a challenge in reaching platinum.

No it's not, remember the industry forecasts last year (500-600k)? Drake did much better with same sales from last era. I'm not saying Kendrick did badly obviously good numbers but I expected 150k more at least. He'll face a challenge in reaching platinum. I went back and checked. HITS said 400-600k. I think it's a good number considering it was released accidentally and physical copies had to be rushed to retailers which arrived later in the week.

You can believe in that but in this day and age, people will know in 10 seconds if someone as famous as Kendrick releases an album.

^It was a messy release week. You are totally forgetting everything that happened last week. His label head was pissed.
Fans went to retailers and the album was not on the shelves.
If it had come out this week as scheduled and he ended up with 324k, it would be disappointing.
Drake did 495k. Drake is huge. Kendrick is on his 2nd album. 324k is good for him. He'll be fine in the long run.

www.metalinsider.net/columns/metal-by-numbers/metal-by-numbers-325-this-is-madnessMetal By Numbers 3/25: This is madnessPosted by Matt Brown on March 25, 2015 Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week. About two weeks ago I mentioned how inclusive we are on this column. I bring this up again because I went to listen to a sample of Sleeping With Sirens’s new album out of curiosity and it sounded like someone whacked One Direction with a post-hardcore baseball bat. Not the most metal thing but, hey, there aren’t many debuts this week and we already have Falling In Reverse on here anyway. So why the hell not? Notable Debuts: Sleeping With Sirens, Madness (Epitatph) #6, 34,950 sold This doesn’t manage to outdo the band’s previous album, but it’s a top 10 debut nonetheless. Notable Sales:Kid Rock, First Kiss (Warner Bros.) #23, 12,900 sold Over 200,000 sold in week 4. AC/DC, Rock or Bust (Columbia) #67, 3,925 sold Rocking a 16% drop. Falling In Reverse, Just Like You (Epitaph) #80, 3,375 sold A 17% drop. Red, Of Beauty and Rage (Essential) #81, 3,350 sold Raging over a 32% drop. Marilyn Manson, The Pale Emperor (Loma Vista) #96, 2,975 sold Nearly at the 100,000 mark. Slipknot, .5: The Grey Chapter (Roadrunner) #104, 2,850 sold Perspective: even if life seems difficult, at least you haven’t been stabbed in the head lately (hopefully). Foo Fighters, Sonic Highways (RCA) #124, 2,500 sold Only a drop of 1%. All That Remains, The Order of Things (Razor & Tie) #128, 2,425 sold At just under 30,000 sold in four weeks, it’s not a particularly tall order. Steven Wilson, Hand. Cannot. Erase. (Kscope) #137, 2,275 sold Nearly 20,000 sold. In This Moment, Black Widow (Atlantic) #158, 1,925 sold A slight boost of 2% brings this to just under 100,000 sold. Papa Roach, F.E.A.R. (Eleven Seven) #175, 1,775 sold Not much change from last week. The Pretty Reckless, Going To Hell (Razor & Tie) #183, 1,700 sold Oh hell, this has sold over 158,000.

It’s the fourth-largest selling album of 2015, behind Taylor Swift’s 1989 (916,000), Drake’s If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late (774,000) and Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour (525,000). - Mark Knopfler, Tracker - No. 14: The veteran artist (and front man for Dire Straits) nets his highest charting solo album yet, as Tracker debuts at No. 14 with 36,000 units. That surpasses the No. 17 peak of both 2006's All the Roadrunning and 2009's Get Lucky. - Madonna, Rebel Heart - No. 21: Madonna’s Rebel Heart slips from No. 2 to No. 21 with 26,000 units (down 78 percent) in its second week. It fell by 80 percent in album sales, to 24,000 (down from 93,000). The 80 percent erosion is steep, but not terribly out-of-the-ordinary for a title that likely had a lot of pre-order sales that made it difficult to sustain a strong second week. High-debuting albums from superstars regularly see second-week declines of more than 75 percent in sales. For example, in the tracking week ending March 8, Big Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise, Kid Rock’s First Kiss and Chris Brown & Tyga’s Fan of a Fan all dropped by 75 or more in their second frame. In the past year, albums that fell sharper than Rebel Heart include: Fall Out Boy’s American Beauty/American Psycho (82 percent), Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways (81 percent) and 5 Seconds of Summer’s She Looks So Perfect EP (82 percent). - Echosmith, Talking Dreams: No. 38: The still-rising band finally graduates from the Heatseekers Albums chart, as the 2013 release breaks into the top 100 of the Billboard 200 chart, zooming from No. 101 to No. 38 -- a new peak. (Titles are removed from Heatseekers once the act reaches the top 100 of the Billboard 200.) - Soundtrack, Annie - No. 55: The musical's March 17 home video release prompts a surge for its companion soundtrack: it's up 143 percent in units (to 9,000 for the week), pushing the set to a re-entry at No. 55. Pure album sales accounted for 7,000 of that overall unit total. - Elle King, Love Stuff - No. 84: After a month's absence from the list, the album returns courtesy of promotion and discounting in the iTunes store. The set earned a 248 percent download gain, assisting its overall 6,000 unit total for the week (up 94 percent) - Soundtrack, The Sound of Music - No. 148 — Following the ABC TV special The Untold Story of The Sound of Music (which aired March 18), the soundtrack returns (up 15 percent in units and 8 percent in sales) nearly almost exactly 50 years after its chart debut (March 20, 1965). The former No. 1 -- it topped the list for two weeks in 1965 -- was recently reissued with bonus tracks. - Rush, 2112 - No. 149 — A hologram vinyl edition of the 1976 album was released on March 17, prompting the set's debut at No. 2 on Vinyl Albums (4,000 sold) and it's 649 percent sales gain (basically all from the LP release).
