Well Carly Rae Jepsen failed us with I Really Like You which was hyped as the next Call Me Maybe ;) Personally, I'm also bored with the chart right now that only thing I'm looking forward right now is if UF can tie or break One Sweet Day's record. I love UF though and glad for its success, it's such a strong song, dominating in all 3 elements Other major artists like Kelly Clarkson and Madonna released singles and none of them went top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Taylor Swift's "Style" would of had a chance if it was promoted but it is a very long shot to go #1 at the moment.

If See You Again want to reach #1, they could always make a tear-jerker Paul Walker related MV. Always do wonder to sales and bring in clicks.

Am I the only one who does not wish to see "One Sweet Day" be dethrone by Uptown Funk? I mean, the latter is a great and very fun song (with a smart production) but OSD is a smooth vocal treat, with a more meaningful theme and strong lyrics, sung by arguably two of the most successful acts of the 90's (both boasting their own 10+ weeks at #1 hit)... They absolutely deserve that record. I just want a more meaningful song to reach that height. At least one that's less of a braggadocio...

If the visual is on point, See You Again could become a smash ballad because it seemed Radio is responding nicely so far.

I mean it's not like they'll have to cheat to get the record. They just got very lucky with timing and lack of real competition. And if/when Uptown Funk breaks the record it will also be very deserved. It was the most popular song for 17 weeks, that's at the very least 4 months. That means enough people tolerated that for 4 months.

When I first heard "Uptown Funk," I would have thought you were insane if you told me it would even hit #1, let alone go on to break the record for most weeks at the top of the Hot 100. "One Sweet Day" was one of those universal songs that appealed to almost everyone and almost all radio formats. "Uptown Funk" is just a tribute to early 80s funk music (which was basically ignored by pop radio back then when it was at its peak). The fact that the strongest contender to dethrone it is another old school R&B song makes the whole thing even more surprising.

"One Sweet Day" was very neutral; if you hated it you probably hated current music in general. "Uptown Funk" on the other hand is polarizing. Sure, obviously so many people love it but for every one of them there's a radio listener who's found it despicable since day one. Usually songs that are so divisive start to crash by this point, but this one keeps on going.

The funny thing is that "One Sweet Day" featured two of the biggest hitmakers of that era, and "Uptown Funk" features just one big hitmaker of the modern era. I wonder how successful "Uptown Funk" would have been had it featured someone other than Bruno Mars.

I feel like Justin (unfortunately), Pharrell, or maybe Usher could have pulled off a big hit with it but Bruno is definitely pop radio's "chosen one" in terms of bland ass male pop acts this decade. If an unknown sang "Uptown" I doubt it would have came anywhere near #1 on the chart.

Hey, what happened in iTunes? BBHMM felt to #12, GDFR jumped to #3, LMLYD over Earned It... It appears on iTunes, in kworb.net/pop/ is different

Hmmm...iTunes does its first-ever audience recalibration? ;) The Easter Basket Gift Card boost also came to mind, but BBHMM's sudden and drastic drop is pretty unusual.
On another note, I'm really surprised to see UF referred to as "divisive." While I understand that not everyone in the US adores UF (every song will have its detractors), it really doesn't strike me as a song that would make people go "Fuck this, change the station RIGHT NOW!" (unless they're just sick to death of it from overplay now.) Speaking of overplay, I don't see how a song that's supposedly so divisive would've reached an AI peak like UF did - wouldn't the callout scores have held it back? When I think of divisive hits, I think of "Gangnam Style"...or BBHMM.

One Sweet Day epitomized the sentimental schmaltz that dominated radio in the mid-90s. Uptown Funk epitomizes the retro funk/soul revival that's been steadily becoming more popular since Amy Winehouse came along. In their own way both songs are good time capsules of music trends.

Katy Perry did a remix for Last Friday Night (which also might have been discounted to 69 cents, but that might have been The One that Got Away, I don't remember), and that did not seem to taint her tying Michael Jackson's record of 5 #1's from one album. It's almost like, if Bruno is going to come close to breaking the all time record, and the single most distinguished Billboard record, of course you would expect his label to try to do something to increase his chances. It would be surprising if they didn't. Any shady tactics will probably get lost in the anals of history. Not saying that it's the right thing to do, but, what would you expect? Last Friday ended up not hitting number one when the remix was released but actually got it later

Agreed. Uptown Funk appeals across many genres and many generations. My grandparents, parents, sister, and even young brother love it and know the lyrics. It's not controversial, and it's very catchy. People are only upset because it might break a record set 19 years ago. Being a huge Bruno fan, I would love to see him and Mark break the record, but if it doesn't happen it's still incredible all the success the song has had so far.

If the record set 19 years ago was by Los Del Rio people would be cheering Bruno on. Even if the record was by Boyz II Men (oh wait it is ;) ) people would be cheering Bruno on. This is all about Mariah.

This is all about Mariah. I know you've been following the Hot 100 threads, so you've seen that there certainly ARE posters rooting for Bruno (on a very consistent basis, in fact.) If your point was just to acknowledge that Mariah Carey has a more vocal fanbase on Pulse Music Board than Boyz II Men or Los Del Rio, then...

Imho Uptown Funk only makes it look like there is no real competiion. It kept blocking TOL for 8 wks which could have spent several wks at #1 under different circmustances. It still has a massive +40% lead in streaming w/o a single video going viral last week. Callout scores also show that people just dig it. It will have ~32 million streams on YT although this week although next Friday marks 5 months since the release.
I always felt UF will be a hit but the right timing changed it into this multi format smash it became. This is Mars filler single just threw out there in between his eras, but he made it clear it's the only new music music from him for a while since he announced in lae January ha he's about o sart working on his next album although the demand for him is huge both in US and overseas. He just takes his time as he always does.

The funny thing is that "One Sweet Day" featured two of the biggest hitmakers of that era, and "Uptown Funk" features just one big hitmaker of the modern era. I wonder how successful "Uptown Funk" would have been had it featured someone other than Bruno Mars. I'd imagine, best case scenario, it would have had to build up a following rather than having a relatively easy run at radio, so, if it had hit number one at all, it would have been with far fewer weeks. But, then, I don't had imagine the record it's challenging to break would be held by "One Sweet Day" had that been a collaboration between, say, Samantha Cole and Art n' Soul. So, yes, I think we can all agree that songs' chart performances are influenced by the artists releasing them.

I think Uptown Funk probably would have hit #1 with a different singer. Perhaps it wouldn't have got as many weeks, and probably would've taken a longer time to take off, but I still think it would have got there. It's just a very good song, with really broad appeal, and whilst Mark Ronson isn't an A-List music star, he's still famous enough that this song would've got heard eventually even without Bruno imo. At the very least if it was Mark Ronson ft. unknown vocalist it would have taken off in the UK first, and then gone worldwide afterwards. It's the same with songs like Somebody That I Used to Know (or even something like Gangnam Style or Blurred Lines), once the song gains a bit of traction and a few people become aware of it, it grows in popularity exponentially, and it just becomes unstoppable.

The leading contenders have all been in the top 5 for 6 weeks or more. Their shot at #1 lies in still being around when Uptown Funk has declined enough(2 weeks minimum). Something else to come out of nowhere has a better shot(Wiz Khalifa for example, if it can hang on long enough). Easier to do with each passing week.

(but they didn't know that) Cuz when the remix started plummeting later on in the week, they freaked out and discounted it. The discount lasted thru the weekend and thru the next week.

I have family members ranging from 5 to mid 40s who absolutely love the song! *Big difference (like you said) between something like this and Blurred Lines, there is nothing controversial w/ this song. Times aint good out there in the world for a lot of people and a song like this is exactly what people need and want. It's fun, catchy as hell, amazing retro production, has different layers to it/high points etc...so I agree w/ the few others who said it- there's a 'few' on here who may like the song but just don't want it to beat you know who. Simple as that. OSD was a total mid 90s sounding song and was another case of 'perfect timing' and feat. two if the biggest acts in the world who were at their peak. So it made every bit of sense for it be as big as it was. Today, it sounds like a dated, forgettable but typical perfectly crafted ballad/love song...from the mid 90s lol. Dunno how one can truly feel OSD stood the test of time or is better than 'Fantasy' or 'WBT' (the first that come to mind)..
