Had the Hot 100 No. 1 really been all that diva-dominated lately...?
2009 = Eminem & co., Flo Rida (with an uncredited Ke$ha), Jay Sean, Owl City, Jason Derulo, Jay-Z (with Alicia)
2010 = Taio, B.o.B, Usher, Eminem (with and without Rihanna), Bruno, Far East Movement
2011 = Bruno, Wiz, Pitbull, LMFAO, Maroon 5 (with Xtina)
2012 = LMFAO, fun., Gotye, Flo Rida, Maroon 5
2013 = M&RL, Baauer, Robin & co., Eminem (with Rihanna)
2014 = Pitbull (with Ke$ha), Pharrell, John Legend, MAGIC!
Maybe things were slightly tilted in favor of females, but it's not like men had been shut-out by any means. Some of the male acts I listed did have help from female guests, but I'd hardly call Dev, Nayer, Kimbra, etc. "pop divas."

You also have to realize that non-diva songs are going to start performing like this now. The recent dance-pop era is winding down on the Hot 100; Rihanna's new singles haven't been killing the chart like she usually does, Katy Perry's last album yielded two big hits and three duds (by her lofty standards), Gaga's last album couldn't catch fire at radio outside of "Applause", and Ke$ha has zero momentum now outside of a featured vocal on someone else's hit. Of course there's still Taylor, but music is cyclical and now we're heading into new directions. Male-driven songs are starting to dominate again. There will always be a Meghan Trainor or Lorde, but look at Blurred Lines, Happy, Uptown Funk…men are back on top for now. But other than Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars (and at a stretch - Jason Derulo) there aren't very many major pop male solo artists right now. Are you sure? two of the best selling albums of last year (and both are selling very well this year too) are from males, X and In the lonely hour. Both able to produce at least a couple of top 10 hits. Yes both have short careers, but Bruno has only two albums too |

I can only imagine what the weekly Hot 100 threads would be like enduring 14 weeks of "The Macarena". Macarena, You Light Up My Life, and Physical. The unholy trinity of Hot 100 terror. And all three of these are in the top ten biggest Hot 100 hits of all time.  You light of my life is a masterpiece compared with other long run number ones like Boom boom pow or i got a feeling |

Are you sure? two of the best selling albums of last year (and both are selling very well this year too) are from males, X and In the lonely hour. Both able to produce at least a couple of top 10 hits. Yes both have short careers, but Bruno has only two albums too Oh right, I forgot about Ed and Sam lol. But still, they're too new to really judge if they'll have any longevity yet. Bruno's been around for 5 years and has churned out a steady flow of major hits in that time period, including a song that's currently on its 14th week at #1. I'd say his credentials are enough to make him an established pop star at the moment. I mean, Ke$ha broke through in the same year, and Lady Gaga only a year before. |

Barring a surprise release, it doesn't have a lot of competition. I don't see it budging from the top of iTunes anytime soon, it's already #1 on Spotify, it has tons of room to grow on airplay, it's topping charts all over the world right now... it's going to be a monster hit. |

"Together Again" = The American Foundation for AIDS Research ("A portion of the sales") Granted, OSD and TA weren't tied to the death of one specific, recognizable individual. Maybe there's better examples for comparison? |

I think who dominates has simply changed hands over the last 2 or 3 years. It happens. And right now we're kind of between staples on the charts (unless Ariana and Selena are on their way to becoming the next superstars, please no). Plus a lot of divas and big names are between albums and eras right now and other than Taylor, Rihanna is the only one having an era but because of the songs themselves not being standard pop hits, she's not having the same kind of success. I think she easily could have though if she went with We Found Love Part 2 or something. Kudos to her for switching it up.

Rihanna's new songs aren't nearly as accessible as her past hits were. 2. The material on Katy Perry's latest effort was...questionable. 3. GaGa has arguably been over for a long while at this point. 4. Same goes for Ke$ha. That being said, you are right in that it is winding down and that male-driven songs have been the preference lately, but the women in the game (bar Taylor) have not been giving the public amazing quality music. If they were giving us really good songs it would be a lot more even right now. |

It was just generally about commemorating people who died: loves ones, family members, friends, etc., and not addressed to one specific person, so you wouldn't really expect any proceeds to be given to charities. As much as I HATE to give it credit, "All About That Bass" or.... "Uptown Funk" itself. It's not that uncommon. So you keep saying. But as the record has no spun several times in this thread, it's a universally themed tribute song from a blockbuster movie that has multi-format appeal and the proper promotion. Of course it makes sense. Those songs didn't blow up suddenly, they climbed somewhat gradually. They didn't go from #42 to #1 in a matter of a few days. Yes I know it's a tribute so I can definitely understand large first week sales. But now that the movie hype is done, I don't get how a non-pop-diva maintains a 3x lead and barely decreases in sales at all. The movie hype is not really done. On its second weekend it still earned $59M which is big for a 2nd weekend cume and it also made box office headlines with is record opening in China and earning over $800M worldwide in just 2 weeks. The movie and the song is everywhere on the Internet from social media posts to articles talking about the final scene in the movie and some even embedding the music video. The song is connecting and sticking with the audience |

You also have to realize that non-diva songs are going to start performing like this now. The recent dance-pop era is winding down on the Hot 100; Rihanna's new singles haven't been killing the chart like she usually does, Katy Perry's last album yielded two big hits and three duds (by her lofty standards), Gaga's last album couldn't catch fire at radio outside of "Applause", and Ke$ha has zero momentum now outside of a featured vocal on someone else's hit. Of course there's still Taylor, but music is cyclical and now we're heading into new directions. Male-driven songs are starting to dominate again. There will always be a Meghan Trainor or Lorde, but look at Blurred Lines, Happy, Uptown Funk…men are back on top for now. Rihanna is becoming the Kanye of pop/R&B and its working. She has turned two songs that would have never even seen the light of day into radio and commercial hits, but because they are so out there, they're not going to be massive #1s. But she is far from over. Katy's duds from PRISM were still moderately successful and the two big hits were bigger than big hits. By the way, Dark Horse is about to hit the top 100 on iTunes yet again at a discounted $.069. Gaga's album was plagued with management issues, personal drama, a lack of accessible material, and still managed to sell almost 800k units. And Kesha went from having a top 2 hit followed by 2 gold singles that reached Top 40 to a stint in rehab and a messy public break with her svengali amid allegations of sexual assault, so those things do sort of stifle the momentum of a record. |

Im amazed at how UF continues to get such minimal declines. While SYA is gaining on radio it's not smashing as hard as I thought it would be now. Clearly, radio is still fully behind/ not over UF lol. If things stay this way, next weeks charts will be super close (much more than this week). UF isn't 'gaining' (staying stagnant but it's only Tues.). SYA def isnt getting as many constant green updates. Actually, the last few have been red.
