Anybody have any thoughts on any syndicated show in their area? Bad or good?
I bring this up because (and I've brought this up before) Taste Of Country Nights is easily the worst syndicated show I've ever heard. Their playlist is about as short as you could possibly imagine (they loved to play "Take It On Back" as much as possible when it was out, and still do). They have the same old awful bits and trivia that local FM morning shows do, and it drags on far too long - 5 hours - from 7 to Midnight.
There's been a few times that I either don't have my Sirius/XM unit for whatever the reason might be or I'm riding in someone else's car and I have no choice. WYRK let go their longtime mid-day deejay in January of 2013 and their evening deejay, took his spot. They then added Taste Of Country Nights in the night time slot and it's been there ever since. I know most listeners don't know any better and I understand I'm a unique situation when it comes to some knowledge on radio in general, but I don't know how anyone can listen to it, lol.
Back when I was a kid, there was a great hour long show that aired every week from Nashville that only played the absolute brand new releases. It was on the Olean country station, but I haven't heard it in years and doubt it's even in existence today.
Thunder Road is nostalgia but WYRK dropped the Country Music/NASCAR show at the start of 2007.

Taste Of Country Nights does not have the same feeling as someone who is from the area. I love the Saturday night request show because you get to talk to someone from WYRK.

Yeah, I'm not behind the scene of Townsquare Media, so I'm sure there's a reason why they feel it's best for the station and I doubt the ratings are down since they've kept the show on for over two years. There are numerous people though that are qualified for the job and I think it's best to have a local deejay in there for the 7-Midnight slot. Most stations have a syndicated show of some sort during the week, so perhaps there's pressure to have one. Remember, WYRK is a partner with Taste Of Country's website (you'll notice the same exact website layout for both) so I'm sure there's a mutual relationship there.

Unfortunately there's not many that usually air at that time slot. If ratings do dip, they'll switch it up but who knows when that is.

For years WMZQ in DC did Americas Country every Saturday night from 8 till midnight. All classics from 50s to 80s. In high school we always played it either around the bonfire or in someone's truck. The Dj was big don Williams fan and often opened the show with Tulsa Time. They moved it to Sunday's in 2008 and it was gone by 2010. Very sad. It was awesome to hear those songs

Taste Of Country Nights is easily the worst syndicated show I've ever heard. Ha! You have no idea how good you have it. I get The Country Club with Dee Jay Silver every Friday and Saturday night on KNIX, and KMLE airs their own show that's of the same concept - let's play uptempo country tunes and mix hip-hop beats in with every single damn song! I would kill to be able to listen to Taste Of Country Nights (which I've actually heard a bunch before, just not in this area) instead of Dee Jay Silver's show.

I will say that their layout was like that well before they added the show. I'm sure they would have added it eventually though.

Jamie beat me to it, but the country club with DJ Silver airs on Saturday nights on WBEE and its as bad as she says it is. The new country station in the area airs Bobby Bones in the morning and CMT Live with Cody Alan at night. That show you remember listening to years ago was called New Music Nashville and apparently is still going on. I havent heard it in a couple years myself.
WBEE used to be live DJs 24 hours a day during the week, but now the 7-midnight and 12am-5:30am shifts are voice tracked. Syndicated show and voice tracking are cost cutting measures that many stations across the country are doing.

WATZ has two great syndicated oldies shows: The Original Country Gold with Rowdy Yates and Rick Jackson's Country Hall of Fame. The former is a somewhat more "mainstream" classics show that has a lot of stalwarts like "Elvira", "Islands in the Stream", etc. balanced with a handful of rarities (he's played Kenny Rogers' "Buried Treasure" at least twice in two months). Rick Jackson's show is even better, because he'll come up with a theme (e.g. trucking songs, songs with colors in the title, etc.) and often has to pull out some real rarities to fit the theme. For instance, the truck driving show had "Giddyup Go", "A Tombstone Every Mile", and "Bonnie Jean (Little Sister)" among others.
Rowdy's show had an interesting history. The show had been around since the mid 90s, and I started listening to it around 2005 when it was hosted by Big John Howell. Sometime later, Rowdy Yates took over and kept things more or less the same. Then the syndicate merged with another, and Rowdy was replaced with Randy Owen. Under Rowdy's watch, the show was cut to four hours, the number of Alabama songs skyrocketed… and I stopped listening, because Randy has a very boring speaking voice, and he gave rambling anecdotes about life on the road instead of history and trivia pertaining to the songs. However, after a few months, Rowdy was able to pair up with another distributor and create The Original Country Gold, which was identical in format to his old show. Most of the affiliates who got stuck with Randy's show punted it for Rowdy's new show, and I don't know if Randy's show is even still on the air.
WATZ has a few more syndie shows. There are two one-hour shows that spotlight new music mainly: New Music Nashville, hosted by Bob Guerra, and Country's Cutting Edge, hosted by Ramblin' Ray Stevens. I haven't heard either in a while since they've both been pushed to odd hours, but I believe the former is the one that will often spotlight album cuts from a new album, and the latter is hosted by a guy who has nothing to say about new material other than "Man, I really like that song".
On Sunday nights, 9 to 11, they air The Driver Show, which is Canadian in origin. I get to hear a lot of Canadian acts that otherwise get little to no play even on WATZ, and sometimes, some truly oddball stuff. I have heard this show play songs as rare as "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex" and a STURGILL SIMPSON ALBUM CUT. I swear I didn't make that last one up.
Finally, there's also Zmax Racing Country, hosted by Paul Schadt and Cathy Martindale. They have a mostly "mainstream" playlist, but sometimes dig up something weird (they played "Let Her Cry" by Hootie and the Blowfish!). The music's fine, but I don't care about the racing interviews in between.

If it was New Music Nashville I remember listening, I believe the host (Bob Guerra) claimed to be the first to play "Skin (Sarabeth)" in early 2005. I also remember him joking how it's about time that they released it to radio as an official single later in the year.
They also interviewed Danielle Peck every week for a few weeks before she launched her debut single "I Don't." If I recall, they wanted to talk to an artist who was going through the process of releasing a debut single.

I echo sabre14 sentiment that the Taste Of Country syndicated show just sucks. I know there are worse options, however the night time DJ at WYRK was really good, and made me love listening to the radio at night, now it's just so empty. The only time I listen to WYRK these days is in the morning and that's because I like the DJ's a lot. That's something cool that radio (used) to bring to the table, a balance of good music mixed with personality. God I miss those days....hard to believe it was only like 3 years ago

In the end, the mid-day slot is better than the night shift so he had to take it. He disagrees with me often on the direction of country radio but overall he's a great guy and fun to talk to. He loves Sara Evans...like really loves her. If you request a Sara song during Noon Tunes, he'll play it, guaranteed. He enjoyed "Bottoms Up" and "That's My Kind Of Night" though.

You should put this theory to the test! But suggest something completely off-the-wall, like "Fool, I'm A Woman" or "Anywhere"

"Born To Fly", "I Could Not Ask For More", "Perfect", "Suds In The Bucket", "A Real Fine Place To Start", "Cheatin'", "A Little Bit Stronger", and "Slow Me Down" are fair game though.

Listening to Taste Of Country Nights again right now...still as awful as ever. Every song is an overplayed single that I've heard 50,000 times too many. When they're not playing songs they're talking nonsense like all-juice diets... At least my friend and I could be making fun of Dee Jay Silver's songs right now, lol.
