'Pitch Perfect 2' Soundtrack Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

The Pitch Perfect 2 soundtrack sings out at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as the set debuts atop the list. The album, which was released on May 12 through Universal Music Enterprises, moved 107,000 units in the week ending May 17, according to Nielsen Music.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Pitch Perfect 2 is the third soundtrack to reach No. 1 in 2015, following the companion albums from Fox TV’s Empire series and the theatrical film Furious 7. That’s the most No. 1 soundtracks in a calendar year since 2010, when three Glee albums topped the list.

Of Pitch Perfect 2’s launch, traditional album sales comprised 92,000 units, and the set also debuts at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart.

The Pitch Perfect 2 film and album follows the first movie and its corresponding soundtrack, which were released in 2012. The new film was released in theaters on May 15.

Pitch Perfect 2 earned $70.3 million at the U.S. and Canada box office in its debut weekend (May 15-17), according to Box Office Mojo -- out-grossing the entire domestic run of the first Pitch Perfect ($65 million). The first film’s soundtrack peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and has sold 1.2 million copies.

The Pitch Perfect soundtrack spawned the fluke hit single “Cups,” performed by the star of both films, Anna Kendrick. The tune peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold 2.1 million downloads.

Last week’s No. 1 album, Mumford & Sons’ Wilder Mind, slips to No. 2 in its second chart week with 58,000 units (down 77 percent). The Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack scoots 6-3 with 48,000 units (down 8 percent).

David Guetta’s Listen album zooms into the top 10, jumping from No. 30 to No. 4 -- a new peak for the album and artist -- with 43,000 units (up 198 percent), as the album was deeply discounted to 99 cents in the Google Play store during the tracking week. Listen sold 29,000 downloads (up 2,136 percent), re-entering at No. 2 on the Digital Albums chart.

The album initially debuted and peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard 200 dated Dec. 13, 2014. Guetta’s previous chart high came when his Nothing But the Beat album debuted and peaked at No. 5 on Sept. 7, 2011.

The Furious 7 soundtrack climbs 7-5 with 41,000 units (down 12 percent).

Three soundtracks -- Pitch Perfect 2, Fifty Shades of Grey and Furious 7 -- are in the top five. That’s the most soundtracks in the top five in a single week since the Sept. 8, 2007-dated chart, when High School Musical 2 was No. 1, Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus was No. 3, and Hairspray was No. 4.

Rock band Incubus is the second and final debut in the latest top 10, as its new EP Trust Fall (Side A) bows at No. 6 with 40,000 units. It’s the sixth top 10 album for the group, which last visited the top 10 in 2011 with If Not Now, When? It debuted and peaked at No. 2, selling 80,000 copies in its first week.

Rounding out the top 10… Zac Brown Band’s former No. 1, Jekyll + Hyde, slips 5-7 with 39,000 units (down 41 percent). Josh Groban’s Stages descends 2-8 with 38,000 (down 62 percent). Taylor Swift’s 1989 holds steady at No. 9 with 37,000 (and a 3 percent gain). Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour falls 8-10 with 36,000 (down 8 percent).

Streams definitely will not. YouTube is not included in SEA, only on-demand services.

Hip Hop Album Sales: Snoop Dogg, “Furious 7” & Tech N9ne

“Furious 7” finds itself in the Top 5 again, Tech N9ne’s “Special Effects” slips to #20.

Snoop Dogg’s thirteenth album, Bush debuted at #14 on the Billboard 200 this week with a little more than 27,000 albums sold in its first week. Continuing to hold strong this week is the soundtrack to Furious 7, the James Wan-directed film which features Atlanta rapper Ludacris, crooner Tyrese and Vin Diesel. Following his debut at #4 last week with his newly-released Special Effects album, Kansas City wordsmith Tech N9ne has dropped to #20.

Snoop Dogg Debuts At #14 With “Bush”

Serving as his first album since 2013’s Reincarnated, Snoop Dogg’s Bush was unable to break into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, but did manage to move over 27,000 units and obtain a streaming count just short of 3 million. In a HipHopDX review published last week, Bush, which was produced by Pharrell Williams, was described as an album that “channels the 70s party sounds of Snoop Dogg and Pharrell's youth.”

“Furious 7” Remains In The Top 10

With appearances from a who’s who of artists including Wiz Khalifa, T.I., Young Thug, Iggy Azalea, and Future, the soundtrack to Furious 7 dropped out of the Top 5 last week, but jumped back into Top 5 positioning with the release of this week’s Billboard 200. With a little less than 10,000 albums sold this week, the album clenched the #5 spot.

Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

The debuts are a bit bare bones this week (actually the charts are pretty small in general). That’s partly because of two bands I chose not to include: Incubus and Hinder. Nothing personal against Incubus, it’s just that their eligibility is questionable and the last time they were in one of our headlines it was only because the name Deftones wasn’t far behind. As for Hinder…well, I shouldn’t have to give a reason for that. I’m sure you won’t miss them and you’ve lots more to look forward to next week anyway.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the chart:

— Andy Grammer, Magazines or Novels - No. 19 — It's a new chart high for the pop singer/songwriter, as his album continues to profit (rising 35-19; up 55 percent in units; up 138 percent in traditional album sales) from the popularity of its single "Honey, I'm Good." (up 18-12 on the Billboard Hot 100).

— Ed Sheeran, 5 - No. 30 — Ed Sheeran’s new archival EP box set, 5, debuts at No. 30 on the Billboard 200, shifting 14,000 units in the week ending May 17, according to Nielsen Music. The 32-track digital set -- issued through Sheeran’s new imprint Gingerbread Man via Atlantic Records -- collects his five pre-fame independently-released EPs for their first U.S. release. They are also available individually, though none of them debut on any of Billboard’s charts (they sold a combined 2,000 copies). The box -- which sells for around $30 -- sold 6,000 in traditional album sales, enabling its No. 51 bow on Top Album Sales. Its launch on the Billboard 200 is more robust in its overall unit total (14,000), as it profits from track equivalent album (TEA) and streaming equivalent album (SEA) transactions, which power 58 percent of its unit total. (Its tracks sold 59,000 downloads in total, for example.)

— B.B. King, Live at the Regal – No. 56 — Following the death of blues great B.B. King on May 14, the sales of his albums and songs grow tremendously. In the week ending May 17, his catalog of albums saw a 1,643 percent sales gain, to 34,000 sold for the week. His biggest seller of the week is Live at the Regal, which debuts at No. 28 on Top Album Sales with 9,000 sold (up 5,257 percent) and re-enters at No. 56 on the Billboard 200 (10,000 equivalent album units). King also dots the Billboard 200 at Nos. 59 (The Complete Collection; 10,000 units) and No. 118 (Greatest Hits; 5,000 units). Not surprisingly, King owns the top nine selling blues catalog albums of the week, according to Nielsen.

Further, King’s collected songs sold 45,000 downloads for the week -- a gain of 2,514 percent. King’s top selling song is one of his most familiar: “The Thrill Is Gone.” It moved 20,000 downloads (up 2,680 percent) and leads the Blues Digital Songs chart. It’s one of 18 King songs on the 25-position tally -- the most any artist has concurrently placed on the list since it launched on Jan. 23, 2010.
