Love me some Steve Earle. I wonder what path his career would have taken if he didn't get wrapped up in drugs/jail in the early 90s. I tend to lean more towards his 80's material than his 90's stuff, and now he seems a little weird to me, but I appreciate his musical genius. I considered "Guitar Town" one of my 10 essential albums in a previous thread on here, and I consider 1986 as a breakthrough year in country (coincendentally the year I was born also :)
Top Guitar Town Continental Trailway Blues My Old Friend The Blues Someday State Trooper (live version from Live in Austin, TX album) Sweet Little '66 Week of Living Dangerously It's All Up To You San Antonio Girl Copperhead Road Snake Oil I Feel Alright Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold (with Justin Townes Earle)
Bottom Most of his late 90's albums and current stuff. Can't get into it

You're not alone, zack. Outside of a handful of big-name country legends, Steve is among my very favorite artists. Confession: I still haven't gotten around to listening to Exit 0 or The Hard Way yet (I know), and there are a couple I haven't yet listened to enough to fully digest (e.g. I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive) so nothing from those albums on my list.
It's too hard to rank things strictly, so my faves are in alphabetical order, although I will say "Someday" is probably my favorite Steve Earle song, and one of my favorite songs period.

I would probably place that at No. 3. "Exit 0" is probably the most that Earle ever went mainstream but its still not bad. "The Hard Way" is definitely an acquired taste. Its definitely his darkest and most rocking record. Personally I feel its very underrated, and actually forgot another highlight on my list from that album with "Have Mercy". You're not alone with not hearing all his records. I haven't heard most of his 2000's stuff and the only 2010's albums I've heard are "The Low Highway" and "Terraplane".

Sometimes I can't decide if I like that album or Guitar Town better. I remember reading that Exit O was hyped up quite a bit, and that the CMAs, ACMs etc were persuading him to drop the Dukes band from the album title, so that he could be nominated for Male Vocalist and all the other awards (I guess back then they didnt have category for a band). As a big middle finger, he put the bands name in big print on the album cover LOL. Both his first 2 albums are solid top to bottom, so many good songs.

I was a pretty big fan of Steve back in the day. But like bjer127 mentioned I cant deal with his newer stuff. His voice has deteriorated to the point of unbearable to me & wraps his politics into his music more than I'm comfortable with these days. And Andy you are missing two of his best albums with Exit 0 (my fav) and The Other Kind. Top 1. I Feel Alright (not to sound corny or over dramatic , but this song kinda saved my life) 2. Sweet Little 66 3. Angry Young Man 4. Hillbilly Highway (one of the few half impressive guitar runs I can play) 5. I Ain't Ever Satisfied 6. Snake Oil 7. Continental Trailways Blues 8. The Other Kind 9. Guitar Town 10. The Rain Came Down 11. Someday 12. Dead Flowers 13. I Ain't Ever Satisfied 14. Nowhere Road 15. The Week of Living Dangerously 16. Copperhead Road 17. Esmeralda's Hollywood 18. Justice in Ontario 19. Once You Love 20. Billy Austin 21. Cadillac 22. Its All Up To You 23. West Nashville Boogie 24. Shes About A Mover 25. Sometimes She Forgets Bottom Pretty much everything after the "I Feel Alright" album.

I heard Hillbilly Highway at work last week. I prefer Steve Earle's Six Days On The Road over Sawyer Brown's. I could wear out The Essential Steve Earle until the cows come home. Country rock at its finest.
