TOP 1. Then It's Love (yet again, I go for the Linde cut... also, major props to Rowdy Yates for playing this one last night when Don was his spotlight artist!) 2. Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy 3. Tulsa Time 4. Some Broken Hearts Never Mend 5. Heartbeat in the Darkness 6. It Must Be Love (this one fits Alan Jackson's style so well that I keep forgetting Don did it first) 7. Good Ole Boys Like Me
BOTTOM 1. Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good (sounds like a six-year-old wrote it, and his syrupy voice does it no favors) 2. I Believe in You 3. You're My Best Friend 4. I'm Just a Country Boy

I'm Just a Country Boy Just for Ten Pound Hammer, I have saluted two Dennis Linde songs in my columns over the years. Both by Eddy Raven and both were chart topping hits: I'm Gonna Get You (1988) and In A Letter To You (1989). Then It's Love was the third Capitol single released off the New Moves CD. Here is the chart where it peaked: BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING JANUARY 17, 1987: 1. What Am I Gonna Do About You-Reba McEntire-MCA 2. Cry Myself To Sleep-the Judds-RCA 3. THEN IT'S LOVE-DON WILLIAMS-CAPITOL 4. Fallin' For You For Years-Conway Twitty-Warner Bros. 5. Half Past Forever Till I'm Blue In The Heart-T.G. Sheppard-Columbia 6. You Still Move Me-Dan Seals-EMI America 7. Leave Me Lonely-Gary Morris-Warner Bros. 8. The Carpenter-John Conlee-Columbia 9. Give Me Wings-Michael Johnson-RCA 10. Deep River Woman-Lionel Richie and Alabama-Motown P.S.: I had revealed this chart when saluting Richie's ONLY top ten country hit.

Not really familiar with Don but I like Tulsa Time and I love his cover of "I'll Be Here In The Morning" by Townes Van Zandt Just for Zack97, here is the chart where Tulsa Time peaked. Don Williams cut another Danny Flowers song, Back In My Younger Days (#2 in 1990). Tulsa Time hit #1 shortly after Williams won the C.M.A. Award for Male Vocalist of the Year in 1978. BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING JANUARY 6, 1979: 1. TULSA TIME-DON WILLIAMS-ABC 2. I Really Got The Feeling/Baby I'm Burning-Dolly Parton-RCA 3. Lady Lay Down-John Conlee-ABC 4. Your Love Had Taken Me That High-Conway Twitty-MCA 5. Do You Ever Fool Around-Joe Stampley-Epic 6. Why Have You Left The One You Left Me For-Crystal Gayle-United Artists 7. The Gambler-Kenny Rogers-United Artists 8. I've Done Enough Dying Today-Gatlin Brothers-Columbia 9. The Official Historian On Shirley Jean Berrell-Statler Brothers-Mercury 10. We've Come A Long Way, Baby-Loretta Lynn-MCA

I've never been a huge Don Williams fan. I love ballads but he put my love for them to a test and almost exclusively cut slow songs. Which can get a bit monotonous after awhile. He also leaned a little too folk for my tastes sometimes. I will say this though , at 76 years old , his voice has held up amazingly well.
TOP
1. "Good Ole Boys Like Me" (so well written) 2. "Maggie's Dream" (devastatingly sad song) 3. "She Never Knew Me" 4. "Tulsa Time" 5. "If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)" 6. "I'll Be Here in the Morning" Cant go wrong with this Townez tune) 7. "Rake & Rambling Man" 8. "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" (Didn't appreciate this one til LAW covered it) 9. "Amanda" (Prefer Waylons but Don's wasn't bad)
BOTTOM
1. "I'm Just a Country Boy" 2. "Love Is on a Roll"
These are the only two I actively remember hating & Im sure there are more but I really don't want to reintroduce them in my head. A big portion of his songs were just "there" with me.

I've been a Don Williams fan since I was a young boy growing up on country music in the 90's. For whatever reason Don's music caught my ear back then and I've seen him a couple of times live in concert. Don's voice is just the best...I always like to put him on when I've had a long day and need to de-stress.
1. Lay Down Beside Me 2. Good Ole Boys Like Me 3. Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good 4. If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do) 5. Love Me Over Again 6. One Good Well 7. Love Is On A Roll 8. Stay Young 9. Back In My Younger Days 10. Lord Have Mercy On A Country Boy 11. Mistakes 12. Listen to the Radio 13. I'm Just A Country Boy 14. Come Early Morning 15. True Love 16. Maybe That's All It Takes 17. Louisiana Saturday Night 18. (Turn Out the Light and) Love Me Tonight 19. Desperately 20. Nobody But You 21. Walkin' A Broken Heart 22. She Never Knew Me 23. I Recall A Gypsy Woman 24. Rake and Ramblin' Man 25. That's The Thing About Love
Favorite Albums: True Love from 1990; Flatlands from 1996; An Evening With Don Williams: Live from 1994

Louisiana Saturday Night can be found on Don Williams Greatest Hits Volume IV CD from 1985. That is his version of Mel McDaniel's first top ten from 1981 (#7). Williams turns in a decent version here. The track listing of the greatest hits CD is as follows:
1. Love Is On A Roll-1983-#1 2. That's The Thing About Love-1984-#1 3. Maggie's Dream-1984-#11 4. Louisiana Saturday Night 5. Falling In Love Again 6. Stay Young-1984-#1 7. Nobody But You-1983-#2 8. Walkin' A Broken Heart-1985-#2 9. It's Time For Love-1985-#20 10. Cup O' Tea

See, I'm not the biggest fan of his voice because of how syrupy his delivery can get. A lot of his songs, he sounds like he's trying way too hard to sound sincere. And I think the lyrics to "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" are absolute treacle no matter who would be singing them. I mean, "All that I'm asking is a little less criying / It might be hard for the devil to do / But it would be easy for you"? Like I said, it sounds like a six-year-old wrote it. And this was written by Dave Hanner of Corbin/Hanner, best known for their "Work Song".
And that's probably why I like "Then It's Love" the most. That one is unusually jaunty and bouncy for him, and those are adjectives you can't usually describe him with. Sure, some of its lyrics could be said to be syrupy too, but I think he actually sounds different enough on it to sell it — not to mention the Linde eccentricity all over it. Panel of experts? Dictionary? Encyclopedia?

One of my absolute favorite Don Williams' songs is "We've Got A Good Fire Goin'". I'm a fan of Don Williams' first Capitol single as well. Simple production and his voice carries the song. Here is the chart where Williams peaked: BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING APRIL 12, 1986: 1. She And I-Alabama-RCA 2. Cajun Moon-Ricky Skaggs-Epic 3. WE'VE GOT A GOOD FIRE GOIN'-DON WILLIAMS-CAPITOL 4. You're Something Special To Me-George Strait-MCA 5. Now And Forever You And Me-Anne Murray-Capitol 6. Once In A Blue Moon-Earl Thomas Conley-RCA 7. Feelin' The Feelin'-Bellamy Brothers-MCA 8. I Had A Beautiful Time-Merle Haggard-Epic 9. 1982-Randy Travis-Warner Bros. 10. Grandpa Tell Me 'Bout The Good Old Days-the Judds-RCA

Are all of his studio albums on CD? I would like to know if they are and where I could possibly purchase them. I just recently ordered Ronnie Milsap RCA album collection and can't wait until it arrives and would love to have all of Don Williams' albums on Cd as well. I'm talking anything that came out before his album True Love. I have everything from that one until his most recent album Reflections. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I wonder if Don Williams' JMI recordings are available that weren't rereleased on MCA. JMI was the label Don recorded his version of Amanda, later a hit for Waylon Jennings.

If the songs were on his first 2 albums, Don Williams Volume One and Don Williams Volume Two, then yes they are available on CD on Amazon. The only way I found them are like the ones they posted above which are dual album sets.

Not too familiar with Don's discography. But from the few albums I have heard and own (mostly his latter works), hete's my TOP 5:
1. Donald and June (from "True Love") 2. Old Coyote Town (from "Traces") 3. We Should Only Have Time for Love (from "Flatlands") 4. So Far, So Good (from "Currents") 5. She's a Natural (from "And So It Goes")

I am not too familiar with Don's discography, but I love his final 2 albums for RCA: "True Love" and "Currents" were gems. The small town-esque stories and the characters he created in both albums have become old friends that I love visiting every now and then. Listening to his "True Love" album now... not a dud in the album.

Kathy Mattea turned that one into a hit in 1993 (#19).

Agree "Standing Knee Deep" is such a moving song. The imagery is just so deep (pun intended)! Love this song. Somehow both Williams and Mattea did a good job, though I favor Mattea's version a tad better. From Williams' "Currents," I really like "So Far, So Good."

I couldn't have said it better...that album is like an old friend that I have revisit now and then. It's a great listen from the beginning title track all the way to the end with "Loving You's Like Coming Home." I recently read that Don Williams had to cancel all of his 2016 tour dates due to an unexpected surgery. I sure do wish him a speedy recovery!

Sad to hear as this comes on the news of a last minute surgery Don had to undergo. When I last saw him perform in Nonovember of last year I had a feeling he was probably nearing the end of his touring days. He previously semi-retired in 2006 and came back in 2010 hitting the road month after month up until recently. I got to see Don twice during those years and he sounded as good then as he did when he started.

That's a bummer about Don Williams. I've really been enjoying the career revival he's had in recent years. At least Reflections is a heck of an album to go out with. Best wishes to him in his retirement.

I'm not a big fan of his voice because his delivery tends to be way too syrupy at times. That's why I hate "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" so much: the lyrics are so rainbows and sunshine, overly cheery mush to begin with, and I literally cringe at the "It might be hard for the devil to do / But it would be easy for you" line. Did a five-year-old write that song?
That said, I find the more I listen to him, the more I find songs that work regardless. "Then It's Love" is my favorite not just because it's a Dennis Linde song, but also because it's more bouncy and jaunty instead of "Chicken Soup for the Soul with ten pounds of sugar poured in".

Surprised I have never responded to this thread. I love me some Don Williams. For years I never appreciated his work, until about 5 years ago. I have all his albums on vinyl (converted to Mp3), so I have all of his songs here to judge. It's a shame his catalog his not on itunes or Spotify. I never got the opportunity to see him live, but I remember about 2 or 3 years ago he played at Coachella (?) side stage, and supposedly really captivated the crowd. Alot of younger kids were getting into his music, which was good to hear. His last 2 albums were really strong by the way...
Top 1. Good Ole Boys Like Me : great imagery in this song. classic Bob mcDill written. 2. Tulsa Time 3. Some Broken Hearts Never Mend 4. I'm Just A Country Boy 5. I've Got A Winner In You 6. Lay Down Beside Me 7. I Believe In You : wife and I danced to this at our wedding
Bottom 1. It Must Be Love (not that I dont like it, Alan Jackson's version was superior)
