You'd have to go back before the Internet / Digital Song age to find songs that smashed in the US first, and then delayed everywhere else. The world is much more connected nowadays. Didn't it happen to All about that bass? That hit #1 in Australia before the US. yeah the uk charts are kind of weird since they have a release system that's pretty unique for the country I'm quite intrigued by the UK system. Why does it take so long for singles to be commercially released there? Take Black Magic, for instance. The song and video have been out for like a month, but the single will only be "released" in the middle of July. Why is that? To ensure that it debuts at #1. Or at least peak at a higher position that it would otherwise. Songs are held back 6-8 weeks (or longer in some cases) to maximize airplay exposure and pre-orders. As a consequence, the UK usually has over 30 number ones in a single year. However, streaming is starting to undermine this system..

There are songs that got big in the U.S. fairly late that never got that big elsewhere too -- like "Lights" for example. If I recall, Robyn's first few singles were big pretty much only in the U.S. and Sweden? But I can't think of songs that were global smashes that started significantly earlier in the US "Do You Know What It Takes to...Show Me Love and what it's all about, alright!" Country songs struggle WW though. "Need You Now" missed the top 10 entirely in most countries, for instance. And "Before He Cheats" literally did nothing outside of Canada and the US. Don't forget "Cruise"! Non-country example: "Earned It" hardly did anything outside the U.S.

I'm surprised Maroon 5's "This Summer" seems to have hit a brick wall...it hasn't done well in sales (for them) so maybe it was getting bad call-out scores? Maybe the excessive use of the F word was too much? It's surprising, because it seems engineered to keep their streak of top 10s alive, and it looks like it's going to peak outside the top 20 unless it gets a second wind... The song never really took off on sales, not even after the video's release. The video itself got an extremely small number of views, despite being talked about on every major publication. Apparently radio just jumped on a song that not a lot of people liked, which is funny actually if you consider how it was tailored to be the hit of the summer.

Going #1 is a HUGE deal there. Which leads to the record labels strategically planning out the release dates of the major debuts.

And I already said that Dark Horse smashed in Australia first I noticed the song was a top 10 staple on iTunes in Australia for months... Why wasn't it allowed to chart officially there? It never charted on the ARiA 100? Yet flops like Unconditionally and Birthday charted...

And I already said that Dark Horse smashed in Australia first I noticed the song was a top 10 staple on iTunes in Australia for months... Why wasn't it allowed to chart officially there? It never charted on the ARiA 100? Yet flops like Unconditionally and Birthday charted... Australia is weird because record labels can deny a song from charting if they want to. And that's what they did with most instant grats in 2013 (back when album pre-orders would send promotional singles flying up the iTunes chart on a weekly basis). "Dark Horse" was one of those initially. The song took off prematurely, but Katy's team were busy throwing every effort possible into making "Unconditionally" happen at the time. So they kept "Dark Horse" from charting to not overshadow it (I assume). When "Dark Horse" did eventually become a single in 2014... I guess they just forgot or stopped caring to allow it to chart. It's chart run on the Digital Tracks chart (the bolded part is 2013 weeks): 37-6-5-11-9-8-8-10-6-7-12-11-14-14-14-14-17-24-32-24-27-31-34-22-13-12-18-21-29-32-33-42-48-x-x-x-x-x-x-50 (I believe the video is what pushed it back up to #12 in 2014)

Ry4n pretty much said my theory re: Dark Horse in Australia. They were pushing 'Unconditionally' as the single but we effectively chose 'Dark Horse' instead. It was DH getting the lion's share of airplay and I'm pretty sure it was outselling UC as well, and that would have put DH ahead (I mean airplay isn't factored into our charts but the song getting more airplay generally is the more popular song with buyers). But the label didn't want DH to overshadow UC so it wasn't allowed to chart. This created the problem that once DH WAS a proper single, we'd already been and moved on.
I think the reason it didn't eventually chart when it was a single was because it would have had a low peak that wouldn't have reflected very well on her chart record (since we'd moved on by then) so they didn't bother.

Low sales, low streaming, yet high airplay....the answer is quite simple actually. I don't want to say it outright though.

This is a bit off topic, but what actually happened to Rather Be? I was really interested in charts then and for a long time before, but I didn't know much of the behind the scenes. I remember it was top 5 on iTunes and high on pop radio for awhile, what was it's downfall that led to it only getting a week at #10?

Low streaming (aside from Spotify) and the fact that sales peak was not quite in sync with airplay peak. Unfortunate, since it was on of my favorite songs of last year :( well at least it made top 10 which is good in itself...

Very much identical to the 90s in the US, and this was even a common practice in the US back when the digital age was starting. (I believe the effect of it can be seen in the charts runs of songs like "Hips Don't Lie," "Break It Off," and "London Bridge.") But after a while they stopped doing this in the US because they figured they were losing money, right? I'm not sure what the reason was, but I know that illegal downloading was much higher in the mid 2000s, so that probably played a big part in the decision.

Wow @ The Weeknd's song being top 20 in airplay already! :O Bad Blood back to #1 in iTunes overall (by a very small margin). Looks like BB and Cheerleader could be swapping spots a lot in the next couple weeks. Similar to what was going on with Rude and SWM a year ago.

yeah the uk charts are kind of weird since they have a release system that's pretty unique for the country Aren't the UK charts weighted heavily on sales? For some reason, I think I've heard or read that somewhere.
