Would it be OK if we waited 'til "The Fighter" peaks and/or we get some co-write titles?

Makes the wait between albums seem so much longer, but whenever I want to complain... I can't help but think of the Shania fans and then I feel guilty for being impatient.
I haven't commented yet on Carrie's move to UMG. Some thoughts: - I suddenly missed Windmills/Dudley even more. She would have had a boatload of thoughts, insight and research.
- On the business aspect and from doing contract negotiations for a living, albeit not in the field of entertainment, I expect the following at the very least: a) Carrie's own imprint and the consequent ownership of the masters & increase in control; b) increased share of the revenue; and c) increased budget for overseas distribution AND promotion-- this was a notable lapse when she was with Sony. Except for the first 2 albums, I always had difficulty buying her records here in the Philippines and there was definitely minimal, if any, promotion. One could argue that country music isn't popular in Asia but Carrie still has a sizeable following here, definitely more than other country artists who got major promotion. Toby Keith, for example, had no shortage of standees and huge posters. Note that Toby's label, Show Dog-Universal Music, is under the UMG umbrella.
- While Sony did their major part in building Carrie's superstar career, IMO Carrie's move to UMG was a great decision. UMG has the resources worldwide to do what Sony is unable to do. Also, Sony Music Nashville was never the same powerhouse that it was after Joe Galante left and while Carrie was still consistently their top earner, it felt like she was no longer their priority. More importantly, while change may be jarring, it's also exciting and as Carrie said, inspiring. I myself am super excited for what's to come. It feels like a new chapter in her career.

This sure is interesting. Some people are a bit dramatic but the EOTY/Miranda Lambert points are valid imo. Anyone here make those comments? You're famous! Haha www.billboard.com/articles/columns/country/7751414/carrie-underwood-country-radio-fans'Rabid' Fans Of Carrie Underwood, Other Country Stars Keep Radio On Tight LeashAfter news broke in March of Carrie Underwood’s move from longtime label home Arista Nashville to Capitol, her passionate fan base took to social media to renew their frequent — and, most industry insiders would say, completely unfounded — complaints about Arista parent Sony Music. Many critiques followed a similar pattern. Despite the fact that Underwood sold millions of albums while at Sony, enjoyed a lengthy string of hits (all 25 of her singles promoted to country radio reached the Billboard Country Airplay top 10) and won countless awards, including seven Grammys, a faction of her fan base is somehow convinced the label group didn’t adequately support her. "Sony really let her down since the start of the decade," one fan wrote in response to a Taste of Country story. “Hopefully she can finally win entertainer of the year at the CMA [Awards] and re-establish herself as country music’s pre-eminent star.” Another wrote, “Finally Sony can stop screwing her over in order to give its male singers the Billboard No. 1 (Carrie almost always stops at No. 2.)”( Not true: 15 of her 25 Country Airplay top 10s reached No. 1, the most by any female artist since the chart’s launch in January 1990.) One fan tweeted to country site Roughstock that Sony “did nothing to promote her or her music. She deserves a label that goes the whole mile.” Another commented on a Saving Country Music story, “Always felt like Sony hitched their wagon to Miranda [Lambert] no matter what Carrie did.” Others seemed to believe newcomer Maren Morris siphoned Sony’s attention from Underwood. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Underwood’s fans are notoriously vocal when they don’t like something relating to the artist Silverfish Media director of programming Patrick Thomas calls “their queen.” He should know. Seven years ago, in the aftermath of the devastating Nashville flood, Big D of Silverfish’s nationally syndicated Big D & Bubba Show jokingly introduced Underwood as “Carrie Underwater” when she sat down for an interview. All hell broke loose. While Thomas says Underwood herself got the “innocent” joke and took it in stride, her fans, which he calls the “Carrie army,” turned on the show. “They lit us up,” recalls Thomas, citing specific comments like one about how Big D had damaged the singer’s soul with his quip. “We had hundreds of tweets and Facebook mentions. They were full on attacking us … We were shocked. “We call them ‘People from the Internet,’ ” says Thomas of such fans. “They get lathered up easy, and they do strike.” Big D and Bubba ended up posting an apology on Facebook and sending flowers to Underwood, who in a subsequent interview with the team called her fans “protective.” WUBB Savannah, Ga., morning host Tim Leary had a similar experience after he made a poor choice of words. “I wanted to give her a great intro, so I said, ‘The next person I’m ready to introduce is just enormous,’ ” he recalls. “Carrie leaned into the mic and said, ‘Did you just call me enormous?’ [then joked,] ‘I’ve been called many things. Enormous has not been one of them. Way to make a girl feel good about herself. Think I’ll go exercise for a while now.’ “The moment that aired, Carrie’s fans flooded the station with calls,” says Leary. “I instantly became the guy that called Carrie fat. For months following that, the fans would call and bring that moment up.” And Underwood, who Leary says has a terrific sense of humor, didn’t forget either. A year later, she was on the show again, and Leary commented on “a giant hoop dress” she’d worn on the Country Music Association Awards. Underwood responded, “ ‘Are you saying I looked fat in that dress too?’ Rinse. Repeat cycle one with Carrie fans all over again.” But it’s not just Underwood’s fans who are passionate about the artists they love. Leary says fans of Love and Theft are “true die-hards” who call and tweet every time the duo has new music out. KPLX Dallas assistant PD Smokey Rivers gets barraged most by fans of the artists who populate the Texas/Red Dirt music scene. “They’re very loyal to the genre,” he says. “So when we play a couple of those artists in daytime rotation, we hear the occasional, ‘What about [another Texas artist]? How come you never play them?’ They’re nice about it, but they are a determined bunch.” WUBE/WYGY Cincinnati PD Grover Collins says that through the years, his stations have “gotten beaten up through Twitter, Facebook and request lines with any American Idol singer worked to country, to the point where I’ve told the record companies that [such fans are] doing more bad than good with their persistence.” That includes followers of Scotty McCreery, according to KRTY San Jose, Calif., PD Julie Stevens, who says they “took that stuff to a whole new level: calls, tweets, texts, and it was never-ending.” KMPS Seattle PD Kenny Jay agrees, calling McCreery’s fans “one of the more passionate groups online. It’s been a positive experience with them for us, but they are organized and will deploy when called on to vote in a song war or remind you of add day.” While he doesn’t name names, KUPL Portland, Ore., music director Danny Dwyer says, “We get a lot of fans’ P1s asking us to play the new singles from an artist or group, and if we don’t, then they get a little upset with us. Does that help us make a decision to add the record? No, but it’s a good sign that they are listening and want their star to kick ass and succeed." “Most of the rabid and persistent fans are those of the new and unknown artists,” says WQMX Akron, Ohio, assistant PD Ken Steel. “They’re trying to help break the new artists, and they really think they can be a part of that whole process. It seems like once an artist is established, those rabid fans back off bothering us radio folks a bit.” Case in point: WQMX morning host Scott Wynn has a listener who calls nearly every day requesting Chris Janson. He agrees with Steel that “most of the rabidity is for artists that are new. They may have dreams of helping make them big. Brantley Gilbert’s fans were very rabid when he first came out and they thought Jason Aldean was ‘ripping off his songs.’ ” KWJJ Portland, Ore., assistant PD/music director Savannah Jones also says she hears most often from fans of developing acts, particularly if those artists are active on social media. “It’s an interesting grass-roots thing,” she says. “Like with Brantley and Zac Brown Band in the beginning, their people find them, love them and promote them with calls, emails and face to face.” Jones thinks most fans don’t understand how record-label promotion teams work and “may hear about perceived slights through various sources and then stand behind their artist. It is the beauty of the artist/fan connection,” she adds. “Loyalty goes deep.” Stevens also sees an upside. “Fans are and can be more involved than ever today,” she says. “And the fact that artists can almost touch those fans directly should give radio cause for pause.” Leary says country fans are equally passionate about what they don’t like. “Social media goes insane, and the callers melt the phone lines down,” over those songs, he says. “The fans truly take ownership of their music. I think it is what makes the country music industry great. But whatever you do, don’t call Carrie fat.”

Well of course Billboard is going to defend Sony in this instance. It's an incredibly skewed article that takes aim at a fanbase which is, when all is said and done, harmless in comparison to the A-list stars from other genres. It's not like fans of Carrie Underwood are worse than, say, fans of Beyonce or Justin Bieber, but rare is the day you'll ever find such a deeply-researched article rooted in trying to disprove the base's disliking of label/agency treatment towards their artist. CU straddles the line of country and mainstream pop with all of her releases, but still roots herself in the former, so I'm not surprised that an article like this has gone viral across publications.
Nobody is going to deny Sony's absolutely massive pull that they've had in creating CU's career, because they've legit been at the helm of it every step of the way. But, to overlook the very blatantly capitalistic and manipulative motives that country radio has adopted over the past few years, and how it's negatively affected artists, is stupid. And yes, CU's radio run truly has been, and continues to be, absolutely incredible, but when a consistent pattern arises of the genre's only reliable female radio heavy-hitter getting blocked out of the top spot on the charts by her male counterparts (and often with songs that, sales-wise and on other commercial levels, simply haven't compared to the success that her songs have seen in these instances), whether they're on the same label as her or not, is something to raise a red flag over.
So if they want to go ahead and make an article that slams an entire fanbase for having issues with Sony's radio department when, truth be told, they have valid reason to do so (even look at Morris, who they've yet to get to #1, despite her absolutely blowing up this past year on all other points of the spectrum), then they can go for it. But it shouldn't bother fans. Again, none of 'em are actually denying that Sony's work for her career hasn't been effective; it's legitimately built her career. But it's not like her career has exactly had the same type of trajectory as it had during her first 3 records when Joe Galante was the head honcho. CEO changes and staff overhauls can effect more than just internal relationships.
Also, that "Carrie Underwater" comment really was stupid and if a DJ wants to complain about being called out by fans, then he needs to check himself. Joking about a flood that destroyed so many parts of the town and put so many people out of homes isn't anything you get to receive sympathy for.

^ Also, when I read that article, I wish even more that Dudley is still here. She would have thrown back so much stats and facts at that Phyllis Stark, that it will drown her.

Just dropping by to say that I had a dream that Carrie dropped a surprise album the Friday before the Super Bowl - at which she was the halftime show performer. UMG, make it happen.

Billboard Award nominations came out today, Carrie was not nominated... but kinda confused how that could be? Any thoughts? It's all based on sales & streaming data. "Church Bells" and "Dirty Laundry" didn't shatter much of anything. They were hits, but nothing big enough to gather BBMA noms.

Hi everyone, huge Carrie fan. :)
I have had this question on my mind for the entire 'Storyteller' era, but since I never go permitted to join this site till now I figured I'd ask.
Did her label ever plan on releasing 'What I Never Knew I Always Wanted' to pop radio? I only ask, because I remember back when 'Smoke Break' peaked, and 'Heartbeat' was starting to take off the pop/HAC radio station here (Southern Ontario, Canada) played it several times under their 'hot new song of the week' segment for about two weeks consistently, and then just was never played again. I always questioned whether this was her label trying to get some insight whether it could be a HAC success a la 'Need You Now' or 'Still the One'.

Carrie fans are always welcome here :) As for WINKIAW, or really any song, being released to Pop, Carrie and her label have never had intentions of doing much with Pop or HAC radio. Before He Cheats didn't even get pushed until radio started playing it naturally. The couple songs that she's had that went top 30 on HAC (Undo It, Last Name, maybe a couple more) weren't even promoted much. I think "Some Hearts" was the only single of hers that was actually promoted on any format other than Country/Christian. Some stations just kind of naturally play some of her more poppy material. So I highly doubt WINKIAW was ever being considered for Pop or HAC. We may see Carrie's philosophy towards Pop radio change now that she's signed an international deal with Universal, but with the Storyteller era, I highly doubt anything was going to get promoted to anything other than Country radio. Interesting theory with your station playing WINKIAW though! I wish it had been a country single over "Smoke Break" from this era.

Hey. :) That's why I found it so confusing - I was fully aware Carrie never wanted pop crossover unless it happened in a natural sense, so at the time I was asking myself "WTH?!" because the programmers would even discuss why they liked the song/how they felt it was already gonna be a classic song regarding family life. I think it was more so - I wonder if her label were testing songs against her wishes to try to build a case to why she should release it. During those two-weeks I was dead set convinced, that in Canada at least, 'WIKNIAW' was gonna become a HAC single (similar to how 'See You Again' got airplay on the pop/HAC charts here).

^It'll give Brad Paisley fodder to make fun out of Carrie Underwood for leaving Arista. I can picture Paisley rewriting the lyrics to Lucille and applying them appropriately to Underwood.

To be honest, I think it's time another pair or so hosted. It's irking seeing Brad and Carrie for the past ten years, don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of both but there are other people though
