I'm taking this as an implication that she won't be doing "Smoke Break" on the AMAs, in which case, bless. Time for new blood.
I want a real trashy-looking, trailer park blues line performance of 'Choctaw'. Have the McCrary Sisters and Travis Meadows with her.

I wonder if they're just trying to create buzz, or if they really want the fans to decide which song she performs. I'm assuming she'll perform whatever the next single is. My bet would be on "Heartbeat", but I'd totally be down with "Choctaw County Affair", too. I'm anxious to see how CCA would be received after a high profile performance.

I may be wrong, but I don't think Choctaw will connect with pop audience that well. I'd pick Relapse or Chaser. Leaning towards Relapse since it seems to be getting great response from even casual fans.

Although everyone seems to be leaning towards "Heartbeat" as the second single, I would be shocked if it wasn't "Renegade Runaway," since all signs seem to be pointing that way.
This easily Carrie's most eclectic album, so I'm praying they take a risk at some point in the era, but I suspect they'll go with safer options first.
The industry is a business first and foremost, but Carrie is also an artist who relishes in pushing herself artistically, and if anyone can take some risks and get away with it, it's Carrie.
As much as I would adore seeing 'Choctaw' as a single, it's obviously too soon to say. It's extremely polarizing, and most artists usually regularly perform songs that never become singles. CAA could be a single, but it also could very well be the next "Flat On The Floor," and become a live staple that's never a single.
Singles predictions: 1. Smoke Break) 2. Renegade Runaway" 3. Heartbeat 4. Church Bells or Dirty Laundry

Unfortunately, RR is probably my least favorite song on the album. I don't mind it, but I just don't love it. I completely see why it would make sense as a single, and it would probably do well. But I personally rather see it stay an album track... It's very in-your-face and I can see that being a little too much for radio, but that's just me. I know a lot of people love the song, so maybe it'd smash... Who knows!?!

RR is a guaranteed smash. It needs to be a single, and should have been the lead instead of SB.

Uhm...not the Smoke Break hate And what's the R&B influence everyone keeps referring to in CCA? The choir?

Her best album in years. Really enjoying this.
"Relapse"... has it been discussed? It's Kelly Clarkson's "Addicted" gone country. I actually started singing "Addicted" bridge during the chorus of "Relapse" the first time I heard it.

I hear ya! But they have to sell some albums, too. I think they should definitely take risks, but they should also try their best to keep radio supporting Carrie the way they have. Is there any indication that "Heartbeat" (and more so radio success) equals sales, though? Kelsea Ballerini had a #1 radio hit and has another one in the top 20, and she hasn't even sold 70k albums total. There are plenty of solo male artists out there who keep having radio hits yet have terrible album sales. "Girl Crush," meanwhile, started selling through the roof before radio even got behind it. I happen to agree. There is zero precedence for a song like Heartbeat helping a female push albums and many bros have terrible album sales. I'm more inclined to believe that Heartbeat would put Storyteller on life support than do anything wondrous for album sales.

I was actually just listening to "Heartbeat" in the car and I started thinking that it actually would be a nice single. It seems like a nice fit for the fall and winter seasons. My only issue is that it would probably prevent one of the better songs from the album from becoming a single, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

^^ I think Heartbeat will sell well as a single, but I don't see it being a song that pushes album sales.

Just curious: what kind of single pushes album sales these days?

Just curious: what kind of single pushes album sales these days? None really unless your name is Taylor Swift or Adele.

^ I would say Blown Away song definitely did, and Good Girl was likely more helpful than Smoke Break.... but someone will probably ask me for proof. I don't keep stats... so, it's just an opinion.

It's hard to pinpoint specific singles that sell albums, but for Carrie she's always had longevity in terms of album sales, so her singles must have something to do with that, no?
I mean "Blown Away" opened with 267k and is now nearing 2x platinum. Obviously Carrie does a great job of keeping busy and staying the public eye, but her singles deserve some credit when looking at her sales numbers... "Blown Away" didn't sell the way it did without successful singles supporting it. Maybe for some artists singles don't sell albums well, but for Carrie they always have, it would seem... I don't think "Smoke Break" is propelling sales as well as a lead single should, but I do wonder if a different song of Carrie's was on the radio right now if the whole 5SOS #1 battle would be leaning the other way?
But again, I can't pinpoint a specific single that sold albums (other than JTTW and BHC), but when looking at Carrie's sales trends, it would appear singles and radio airplay are a huge part of why she sells albums so well.

It's too good, and i can relate to it too much.

there's always at least one single on every album that doesn't sell like the others at least now a days a physical release isn't required to chart like it was in the old days for instance Faith Hill's 1998 duet with Tim McGraw Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me never sold enough physical singles in any given week to be on the Hot Country Singles Sales Chart though it peaked at #3 on Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart the week ending August 22nd 1998 and won an A.C.M. award for Vocal Event Of The Year In May 1999

I think "Heartbeat" could be an even bigger smash if she were to record it as an actual duet with Sam Hunt and release that version to radio. Kind of like how she did with "I Told You So" with Randy Travis, but the solo version was on the album. I'm not sure if that would help/hurt album sales though, since the duet with Sam wouldn't be on the album even though his harmony vocals are. But it would definitely make it a huge smash and radio could always play the album version as well, and I definitely think Sam's name will create even more buzz for Carrie's album since he's basically the next big star in country and really hot right now.
I don't expect it to happen, but it could be a smart move. In that case, I'd go:
1. Smoke Break --------------- 2. Heartbeat (Radio Edit ft. Sam Hunt) 3. Renegade Runaway 4. Choctaw County Affair 5. Dirty Laundry 6. Church Bells
I know we'd be lucky if we even get 5 singles, but with this new guy in charge of the label (I forget his name, not too knowledgeable on this stuff) maybe we will get 5 or 6 singles from Carrie this time around since Miranda is getting 6.
If only "Smoke Break" weren't a lead single, they could have had a perfect era with 5 singles that could've/should've went like this:
1. Renegade Runaway 2. Heartbeat (ft. Sam Hunt) 3. Choctaw County Affair 4. Dirty Laundry 5. Church Bells

I deleted Heartbeat from my computer because I don't want any part of that artist on my desktop.
If I had to pick the singles I'd go with: 1. Smoke Break 2. Renegade Runaway 3. Dirty Laundry 4. What I Knew I Always Wanted 5. Chaser

I might be in the minority, but I prefer "Smoke Break" to "Renegade Runaway." I think they should have led off with "Dirty Laundry," but maybe they wanted a more universal message.
My preference of singles: 1. Smoke Break 2. Dirty Laundry 3. Like I'll Never Love You Again 4. Choctaw County Affair 5. Heartbeat or The Girl You Think I Am

Why does everyone think there will be 5 singles? Carrie has unfortunately stopped at 4 singles from both her last albums.

Is it me or are Sam's backing vocals kind of odd? There are random words he doesn't sing (like "we'll only" in the 1st chorus).

Global charting information will start pouring in throughout the day today.
Debuts in New Zealand at 13, her highest-charting there over Blown Away, which peaked at 22. "Smoke Break" went #1 in Australia!

They'll probably go with Heartbeat as single #2. I just hope RR doesn't take the uptempo spot away from DL. RR is catchy... It's just nothing different from Carrie and would be a wasted opportunity to showcase a different sound this era.

-- 1 5 Seconds Of Summer Sounds Good Feels Good 180,386 195,150 -- 2 Carrie Underwood Storyteller 164,090 179,096
Looks like Carrie outdid her original prediction and came respectably close to 5SOS. Would love to see the final number round up to 180k... Not bad at all! And definitely puts her in a decent position for #1 next week (assuming there are no surprise releases and that she doesn't fall too far past the normal 60% second week drop). The CMAs should definitely help soften the blow, as should tour buzz (as tickets go on sale next week). Definitely very happy with the number! :)
