Yeah, Corb Lund is fantastic. I'm only familiar with his Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! album (which is a delight), and I definitely need to explore his work further. zack97, I happen to already have the Houndmouth and the Lone Bellow albums but haven't gotten around to them yet, but I trust your judgement as you've never steered me wrong, so I'll definitely be adding them near the top of my get-to list. I liked those songs by the Malpass Brothers and the Christian Lopez band, they are on my list as well. :)

It's the probably the most non-country thing I've heard that still somewhat resembles country (if that makes sense lol). It's way more folk-rock/Americana than anything. I know that trebor also likes it, I'm just not sure about you, given your tastes. Obviously not trying to tell you what to listen to, just want you to know what you'd be getting into :) The Lone Bellow I definitely recommend checking out. The Malpass Brothers are definitely another treat, I just wish they had included more original material in their album, but I'll be damned if they don't own every single tune and make it their own. Another one that I recommend you check out somewhere down the road is Jamie Lin Wilson. Her latest album features some fantastic songwriting!

I love lots of folk and rock-leaning stuff, so that doesn't scare me! Yeah, your recommendation and SCM's review really makes me want to check out the Malpass Brothers. Sounds like an awesome duo. I have to say, usually I'm rather lazy and venture outside my musical comfort zone only occasionally, but spending time on this board has really introduced me to a ton of good stuff. A month or two ago I didn't know anything about the music of William Clark Green, Brandi Carlile, Kathleen Edwards, etc., and now I'm a bona-fide fan. So thanks guys. :)

I mean you could categorize Houndmouth as the same genre, but both albums sound completely different, funny how the terms "Alt-Country", "Americana", "Roots"...etc are used to describe so many different things, when really, it just means "non-mainstream" lol. And hey if I'm one of those people whose turned you onto new stuff, I'm happy! :) I have you to thank for introducing me to this world of the independent scene, and more specifically, Gretchen Peters, so thanks! :)

I don't think I've mentioned it on here, but I've been really getting into Bob Dylan and Neil Young lately, who aren't country, but would probably appeal to a lot of country fans. Yeah, all the different terms and labels and subgenres in country/roots music can be really confusing! It's almost as bad as metal. You definitely are one of the people who introduced me to new stuff. And I'm glad I introduced to you to Gretchen Peters! I really need to listen to her older stuff, she's said to be one of the best. There are also many more non-mainstream artists I love I need to post about that I haven't yet, which I'll probably start doing this weekend.

His album before that was Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer, which was the first time I was exposed to his music. That album also won the Juno Roots & Traditional Album of the Year in 2006. The great thing about him is that he's been making albums for 20 years and has always made his kind of music and doesn't care about mainstream radio success. "Truck Got Stuck" is such a stupid song that somehow became a single off that album, lol.

Another group that I've discovered lately is Turnpike Troubadours. I really enjoy their stuff, such a unique and refreshing country sound. I can't wait for their new album this year!

Another artist I've been meaning to get into is Will Hoge. Can anyone tell me a good album to start with? Same here! I've heard great things about his "Number Seven" album, as well as "The Wreckage" and "Draw The Curtains". Admittedly, the only album I've heard of his is "Small Town Dreams", which, while encompassing a more mainstream friendly sound, is actually very good, and is a good example of how modern country SHOULD sound, but that's a discussion for another day.

This album is fantastic! Thanks to those who recommended it to me. After three listens, I have found this to be an excellent record from an artist with a ton of talent. Every song is a gem. There are very few debut albums I have heard that have better songwriting than this. I am officially a Kathleen Edwards fan, and will likely be listening to Back to Me soon. I finally got around to listening to Back to Me. All I can say is: Wow.

I only know one Houndmouth song but I really enjoy it. How is their album? What would I expect listening to it in terms of who it compares to musically?

And personally, I like their album a ton. Definitely will be in my top 5 for the year. It's heavily folk-rock and Americana. I don't really know what you'd compare it to, it's very retro sounding, which is one of my favorite things about it. Hope this can at least clear one of your questions up! :)

Artist: JoJo Mason Single: "It's All Good" Label: Manicdown Productions Producer: Dan Swinimer Released: June, 2015 Current Canadian Country Mediabase position: #33 JoJo Mason is a Canadian country artist from Regina, Saskatchewan. He was actually a hockey player growing up and was good enough to play Juniors in Victoria, British Columbia. After a herniated disk injury, he left hockey and by fate met writer/producer Dan Swinimer (who co-wrote "Sweet Love" off Billy Currington's Summer Forever album). JoJo had zero experience singing or writing but took both up immediately and that was only two years ago -- no seriously. I don't love this song (I like the instrumentation and vocals from Mason) but this story of how he literally began singing, writing for the first time, landing a record deal and having a single approaching the top 30 in Canada in less than two years time is incredible.

Love all 4 women you listed though I don't own any of Sarah's albums I have been meaning to buy them! Also for anybody who likes the alt-country stuff should check out Kathleen Edwards' first two albums ' Failure' and ' Back To Me'. They are among my favorite albums from the last decade and must listens imo. Her other albums are good too but those first two are much more friendly for country listeners. Other artists I like that fit into Americana/AltCountry (some I'd consider country but have seen them called alt) First Aid Kit! I just discovered them last week and have been listenting to them non-stop since. They're a great duo from Sweden of all places. My friend sent me one of their songs last week and said I should check them out. So far this is my favorite song:

Figured I would liven up this thread a bit by doing what sabre14 does and making a "Americana Random Video Of The Day". I'll span music not just from acts I've discovered this year, but also Americana stalwarts of the past. First one: Shovels and Rope- "Coping Mechanism" m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra0towhrtpA

I second that, well I honestly don't know much about this duo. Their album "Swimmin' Time" came out last year and is one of the best from last year (I unfortunately discovered it too late). They are known for their darker subject material. I find "Coping Mechanism" to be an incredibly fun song.

I'm gonna need a few more listens to digest it all, but really good stuff. I agree "Coping Mechanism" is a great song, and I was also really impressed by "Mary Ann & One Eyed Dan" and "Thresher." Great voices and very creative songwriting.

Americana Video Of The Day: Whitey Morgan- "Waitin' Round To Die" m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHhZO21SGI4This song is off of his 2015 album, 'Sonic Ranch'. This is my favorite song off of it, it tells a dark story and the instrumentation and production are fantastic. If you like whiskey soaked honky-tonk, this guy might be for you.
