Disclosure Crosses to Rock Thanks to Lorde-Assisted 'Magnets'
By Kevin Rutherford | October 15, 2015 6:37 PM EDT
Lines continue to blur among genres as the electronic duo hits Rock Airplay chart.
Your eyes don't deceive you: Disclosure debuts on a Billboard rock chart for the first time with "Magnets," the electronic duo's collaboration with Lorde. The song is from the pair's album Caracal, which bowed atop the Oct. 17 Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
"Magnets" arrives on the Rock Airplay chart (dated Oct. 24) at No. 41 with 1.2 million audience impressions. Among its early supporters: alternative stations KNDD Seattle (33 plays in the week ending Oct. 11); KKDO Sacramento, Calif. (29); and KROQ Los Angeles (18).
KNDD assistant program director Jon Manley tells Billboard, "When you are in your office listening to 'Magnets,' and your music director is on the air talking about this cool new 'Magnets' song she heard, and you get a text from a friend asking me if I had heard of 'Magnets' -- all at the same time -- you know something is up."
Of course, Lorde adds familiarity to "Magnets" at rock, having crowned Rock Airplay and Alternative Songs for eight and seven weeks, respectively, with her 2013 breakthrough "Royals." Follow-up "Team" topped Rock Airplay for two weeks and hit No. 2 on Alternative Songs. Still, core dance acts in addition to Disclosure have crossed to the format in recent years without rock-focused guests, including Avicii ("Wake Me Up!") and Daft Punk ("Get Lucky," featuring Pharrell Williams); both tracks hit No. 5 on Rock Airplay in 2013.
"[Lorde] certainly helps, but look no further than new bands like Coleman Hell or Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats for just two examples of hits being discovered and having success simply based on the merits of the song," Manley adds.
As "Magnets" attracts a following among rock audiences, Caracal has produced multiple chart hits in its home genre, led by "Omen," featuring Sam Smith, which reached No. 5 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs in August. ("Magnets" ranks at No. 11 on the list after rising to No. 8 last week.)

I think that "lines don't continue to blur" , its more like "alternative radio just ditching rock music altogether".

Never I thought I'd ever see the Lawrence bros get on the alternative chart of all places, but good for them, hope this gets reasonably high. Lorde ain't half-bad on the track either.

This isn't an alternative song AT ALL, but I'm glad it's being shown some love somewhere. It's way too good to waste.

As mentioned before, if Depeche Mode & Portishead could get alternative hits (same as Bjork), why not Disclosure? This would perfectly fit right in with alternative radio circa 1988-92.

This is Pulse, electric guitars are more important than facts.

Considering the names on it, Pop really should just jump on this (meaning, now)...but, whatever.

Agreed. I have no idea what the holdup is with Capitol pushing it - they haven't even actually serviced it to Alternative as far as I know. Strange.

They seem so off and clueless on how to market Disclosure. They probably expected "Omen" to become a hit, and when it didn't, it probably killed their interest in promoting anything else. Because God forbid Disclosure actually get a hit here without boring ass Sam Smith...

Not to mention Sam's also on Capitol, so it made sense for them to want to push that to the fullest over something from a competing label (Lorde's on Lava/Republic - still under the UMG umbrella, but separate).

Agree that it seems the logical thing to do, though it's not hard to also call that blatant. (That said, I'm actually still shocked that that brick-walled so quickly...and I'm still wondering what's up with the complete 180 the U.S. has done on Sam this year post-Grammys, but that's a whole other story.)

Personally, I agree with Adam when he mentions that Capitol don't know how to market Disclosure in the US. It's obvious that "Magnets" has an early support on Alternative because of Lorde, but the fact that they still don't push it in this format is odd and I don't understand what are they waiting for.
As Kurt also mentioned before, it was easier for them to push "Omen" because Sam Smith belongs to their label, but I guess no one expected it to underperform before the launch of Caracal, so they didn't have any back-up plan to counteract this. "Jaded", their current UK single will be (sadly) DOA if it's pushed in the States, but there's some buzz around "Magnets" they could take into advantage and they have nothing to lose at this point.
Anyway, as a side note, I've seen that "Magnets" appears as an Island and Republic release on AllAccess, so I'm wondering if Lorde's label is planning to push it as a joint release like Interscope did with "I Need Your Love" a while ago and (sort of) "Powerful" recently because both parts could be benefitted with it.

I think that may have been a clerical error on AllAccess's end - it's since been switched to being listed under Capitol.

My joint release theory doesn't have any support and it all depends on Capitol since the very beginning. It was so good to be true

I think that "lines don't continue to blur" , its more like "alternative radio just ditching rock music altogether". I don't see a big problem with that. It's not like it's the Modern Rock chart anymore. Anyways, this is OK. Might grow on me.

This could be a possibility as well, but I'm wondering why Alternative stations are jumping on a Disclosure track now when they could have done before, despite their sound isn't too Alternative-ish.

speaking as someone who is a nearly exclusive Alternative music fan, Disclosure is probably my favorite dance-oriented artist currently making music...here in Minneapolis, their singles from Settle were played on 89.3 The Current alongside Mumford & Sons, Vampire Weekend & Arcade Fire...so i must not be the only Alt fanboy who likes their music

They should just push Nocturnal to Pop since The Weeknd is hot s**t right now. "Magnets" is the true Pop hit on the album, but I agree "Nocturnal" could lend it itself to a 1-2 punch if only the label cared.
