I'm really tempted to click on the link but i'm weird and can't listen to albums before they are released. Glad I'm not the only one! Maybe it goes back to my days growing up and all the excitement that came along with knowing you were going to the store at the end of the day to pick up a new album by your favorite artist...then unwrapping it once you had it in your hands checking out all the artwork and lyrics inside...and finally sitting down and listening to the album in its entirety at the same time. It's the little things in life that make me happy lol :) |

It's the little things in life that make me happy lol :) I'm always excited to get new albums as well, but only if I know I'm going to enjoy it. AJ is almost an auto-buy for me anyway, but for all artists I like to be able to listen to their album beforehand and then to decide if I want to spend my hard-earned money on it or not. NRP allows you to listen to the album in its entirety at the same time, and I guess, for me, it doesn't diminish the excitement (of buying an album) one bit. If anything, my excitement will only increase if I love what I hear. I'll be super excited to add it to my music collection. :) But I totally understand that everybody's different :) |

The melody of "Mexico, Tequila and Me" reminds me of 2 other songs: "Suds In The Bucket" (Sara Evans) and "When God-Fearin' Women Get The Blues" (Martina McBride). Hey, I guess that is proof that it is a good song! ;) On a side note, older Alan Jackson looks so much like older Tom Selleck on this album cover... |

I caved and listened one time through via NPR. I completely agree with tim about the entire listening process you wrote about. I am the same way, and was able to pull through for Kacey's new album, but unfortunately couldn't resist temptation for Alan's new one. Angels & Alcohol is phenomenal. If you are looking for a record which does not conform to modern day standards, and has an artist who builds on what he does best...this is it. 5/5 stars on the first listen for me. |

ok i have played the hell out of this every chance i get i think i can make my list here's how the songs rank for me and i love every track (Except 1 which is just ok) so this is hard
1. Angels & Alcohol - so damn good of a classic country song i cant stop playing this one
2. Jim And Jack And Hank - love this song what a great sing along track
3. You Never Know - this is classic AJ here i loved this song when i saw him do it live in a youtube video
4. Gone Before You Met Me - a song about being on the run in a dream what's not to love
5. Mexico, Tequila And Me - i dont know why i love this song so much i just do
6. You Can Always Come Home - classic tale of go chase your life but if things don't work out you can always come home
7. I Leave A Light On - Classic AJ Ballad
8. Flaws - yup everybody's got' em
9. The One You're Waiting For - such great writing here wish it could be higher on this list
10. When God Paints - this would be the only track i'd skip if it wasn't AJ singing it does nothin' for me

I tried to order this on Amazon the other day, but they only have the digital album available. I could've sworn they had the physical album available before...guess I'll try to find it in stores tomorrow.

Got a copy of the album today a day early. Walmart in my hometown goofed up and put it out a day early. There stupidity is my gain. Alan never disappoints!

Yeah, there's been some albums that I've been surprised to find, and others (like Alan's) where I'm thinking, "Are you kidding? Why don't you have this?!?" And no there isn't, I went to the one on Transit next to Wegmans. Kill two birds with one stone ;) Anyways, this album is awesome, between this and the new Jason Isbell, Country has two strong representatives supporting it today. I seriously love every track here except for "Flaws" which I just don't find to be AS STRONG as the other songs. The lower voice really suits Alan very well. |

I bought this on Friday at my local Walmart and the shelves were full of Alan! I've listened to this several times and love it. My top three favorites are:
1. The One You're Waiting On
2. You Never Know
3. Mexico, Tequila, and Me
The album literally has no flaws (no pun intended) but those are the ones which stand out for me thus far. I really wish I would have seen Alan on his 25th Anniversary Tour when he came through here in February.

This is a very solid album. I finally got the chance to listen to the entire album tonight and love it. Some top tracks that I'll be coming back to:
"You Can Always Come Home"
- love how the tempo changes in this; I do have to say I almost want a version of this song that continues with the beginning somberness tempo
"Angels and Alcohol"
- my favorite line is "You can't change lonely with a bottle of wine, It might ease the heartache for one short easy time." As a wino myself, I very much understand this lol.
"Gone Before You Met Me"
- just a classic Alan song
"The One You're Waiting On"
- with a line like "I'd be happy to be the one you're waiting on" this just pulls you in wanting another listen again and again
I have to say the first six months of the year were not very promising, but going into July and the rest of the year I'm liking what I'm hearing so far.

Pretty solid numbers for Alan...much better than a lot of artists that are still getting airplay. AJ's 2013 album The Bluegrass Album debuted with about 22,000, and 2012's Thirty Miles West (from which Alan saw his last two top 30 hits) sold almost 73,000 in its 1st week.
I've listened through the album a few times now, and I really like it. I don't think it's quite as good as Thirty Miles West, but there are some really good tracks on here. My favorites are "You Can Always Come Home", "Angels and Alcohol", "The One You're Waiting On", "I Leave A Light On", "When God Paints", and "Mexico, Tequila, and Me".
"The One You're Waiting On" and "When God Paints" are particularly powerful, in my opinion. Both are just beautiful songs, and country to the core.
My least favorite song is actually "Jim and Jack and Hank". I don't dislike it, but it's definitely at the bottom of the barrel on this album. I can see why they went with it as the lead single since it's one of the more radio-friendly tracks (although I'm sure UMG wasn't expecting any song to do much). However, I think "Mexico, Tequila, and Me" would have been a much better choice. I like the song a LOT better than "Jim and Jack and Hank" as well. I think it's got better lyrics and better tempo, and overall it just seems like more of a radio song. Again, it still probably wouldn't have done much -- radio has made it pretty clear that they're all but done with Alan -- but I think "Mexico, Tequila, and Me" at least has the potential to do better than "Jim and Jack and Hank" could ever hope to do.
"Mexico, Tequila, and Me" is also only 3:26 in length, whereas "Jim and Jack and Hank" is 4:38 in length.

Agree with zack97. Jason Isbell & Alan Jackso are two of this year's best (so far). Have "Angels And Alcohol" and "When God Paints" on repeat. Alan Jackson is already my #9 artist for July at my last.fm account and the album is #7 (just leaped "My Redemption" by Jason Cassidy!) |

After two listens, I can say I quite like this album. In comparison to other recent-ish Jackson albums, I'd rank it below Thirty Miles West but above Good Time and Freight Train. "When God Paints", "You Can Always Come Home", and "Gone Before You Met Me" are all stunners that earn their place in the catalog of great Jackson songs. "I Leave a Light On" is excellent and sounds like a long lost Haggard tune, and the title track and "The One You're Waiting On" earn high marks from me as well. I was unimpressed by "Jim and Jack and Hank" at first, but it's grown on me a bit. I agree with jhomes87 that "Mexico, Tequila and Me" is the better song of the same ilk though. Two songs I can do without: "You Never Know" and "Flaws" - not bad, just not particularly memorable. "Flaws" has a good message but it feels like it could have been a more interesting song. Alan in recent years has fallen into the trap of releasing bloated albums (*cough* Good Time *cough* ), so thankfully he keeps it short and sweet here. I'd give this album a strong B+ or weak A-. |
