I'll probably be the only one that feels this way but I don't like this one quite as well as Southeastern. The song I like best "Palmetto Rose" is the song that most people on twitter etc are saying they don't like. I think Isbell is a great songwriter but it's hard for me to listen to his music over and over because imo it's almost too "deep" and not easy to sing along to.

Obviously not as good as Southeastern, but the first half of this album is pretty terrific. Yeah, a few are quite deep and you have to really listen, but there are a couple (I think it was either How To Forget or The Life You Chose or both) that should be enjoyable for almost anyone. 24 Frames did a great job at mixing thise two factors while having a superb sound - just wish it was a verse longer.

From HITS:
Jason Isbell (Thirty Tigers) 35-40k, 37-42k
WOW!! :O Those are huge numbers for Isbell. Has he ever even sold 10k in a week before? Wikipedia doesn't have any chart information for any of his past albums, and the Billboard website doesn't have much on him either. It looks like Southeastern maybe got close to a top 20 peak on the Billboard 200 a couple years back?
It's just crazy to me how artists like Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, and now Jason Isbell are selling 2-4 times as much as the Kelsea Ballerinis, Canaan Smiths, A Thousand Horses, and Frankie Ballards (etc). Heck even Billy Currington and Easton Corbin came in below 25k with their most recent albums.

Hollllly, those are KILLER numbers. So glad to see that he can draw in that many sales with virtually no airplay. He deserves it.
And yet I still can't find a physical copy anywhere...

Also, this album currently has an 87/100 on Metacritic. In comparison, Kacey's Pageant Material currently holds a 78, Same Trailer Different Park had an 88, and Brandy Clark's 12 Stories scored an 89. Sturgill Simpson's Metamodern Sounds in Country Music has an 81, and Ashley Monroe's Like A Rose also scored an 89.
Those are some of the highest-ranked non-mainstream country albums on Metacritic that I can remember in recent years. As far as radio acts, Miranda Lambert consistently ranks high on Metacritic...Crazy Ex-Girlfriend holds an 85, Revolution holds an 85, Four The Record holds an 83, and Platinum holds an 86. Also, Little Big Town scored a 75 with Tornado and an 83 with Pain Killer. Eric Church is another one that does pretty well; Carolina holds a 76, Chief holds a 77, and The Outsiders holds an 82. Lee Ann Womack's The Way I'm Livin' scored an 89.
I'm sure I missed a bunch (especially ones that scored in the 70's), but I pretty much only checked the artists that I remembered scored particularly well.

Have posted an entry here: pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/5313878/threadThese are my 2 cents: Accomplished new oeuvre from Jason Isbell. Musical delight from A to Z; all winners no fillers. Serious contender to Album Of The Year. Great storytelling, intense weave of sound, imagination and true imagery. Excellent mastering of instruments without the need of extra frills. >9/10

Another question:
Why is the song "Hudson Commodore" 'explicit' when there aren't any profanities in it?

Another question: Why is the song "Hudson Commodore" 'explicit' when there aren't any profanities in it? The definition for explicit is broad and it isn't always about profanity. My guess is it's simply the depiction of substance abuse.

He had the #1 country album according to Billboard Country Update Yep, there was a significant recalculation that brought his total from shy of 40K to about 46K. Alan Jackson's total was also adjusted slightly upward (from below 45.5K to above 45.5K), but not enough to keep it at #1.

This album seems to have great legs too. Sitting at #5 iTunes all-genre compared to Alan Jackson's Angels and Alcohol at #37.

This album seems to have great legs too. Sitting at #5 iTunes all-genre compared to Alan Jackson's Angels and Alcohol at #37. Did HITS forget to provide a forecast for this album this week? They don't have it listed in their top 15, but they've got Alan Jackson selling about 20k this week and Sam Hunt in the 12-14k range. *Jill Scott (Blues Babe) 50-55k sales, 55-60k SPS *Lamb of God (Epic) 43-48k, 45-50k Future (Epic) 30-35k, 47-52k *Southpaw (Shady/Interscope) 30-35k, 35-40k *Bea Miller (SYCO/Hollywood) 24-27k, 25-28k Tyrese (Voltron) 21-24k, 24-27k Taylor Swift (Big Machine/BMLG) 21-24k, 45-50k Alan Jackson (EMI Nashville) 19-22k, 20-23k*We Came As Romans (Equal Vision) 15-18k, 16-19k Meek Mill (MMG/Atlantic) 14-16k, 27-29k Ed Sheeran (Atlantic) 14-16k, 30-35k *Hopsin (Funk Volume/Warner Bros.) 14-16k, 15-17k *Jack & Jack (Jack & Jack) 13-15k, 15-17k Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 12-14k, 13-15k Sam Hunt (MCA Nashville) 12-14k, 26-29khitsdailydouble.com/news&id=297003If Isbell is #5 on iTunes, I'd imagine he'd still be up there somewhat in the overall sales forecast? I'm not surprised that Alan Jackson is lower on iTunes (he's more likely to sell a lot of physical albums instead of digital albums), but I am surprised that Isbell isn't in the HITS top 15 forecast...it just seems like he would be.

Another question: Why is the song "Hudson Commodore" 'explicit' when there aren't any profanities in it? iTunes has corrected this and the explicit song is now "Palmetto Rose" just for one use of "bulls**t" (which I somehow didn't recall hearing).

I've listened to the album at least 5 times now and I really like it. It's no Southeastern but it's an extremely solid entry by Jason Isbell. I really like all the songs but can't get into "To A Band That I Loved."
Favorites:
"24 Frames" "Something More Than Free" "If It Takes a Lifetime" "Flagship" "Hudson Commodore"

I've only listened to this album twice so far. After the first listen, I thought it was merely "pretty good", but after the second listen, I'm blown away. An AOTY contender for sure.
There's not a track I don't like, but I'd cite "Something More Than Free", "Children of Children", "Flagship," "Speed Trap Town", "The Life You Chose", and "24 Frames" as standouts (that's more than half the album, and I expect the remainder to grow on me). "Something More Than Free" just might be my favorite Isbell song, which is saying something.

If everyone on here is a fan of Jason Isbell, then ya'll should check out Drive-By Truckers, the band he started with. They have extremely sharp lyrics with great storytelling. I feel like many would be a big fan on here. They're personally my favorite band.

Something More Than Free is now #3 on iTunes and Southeastern at #10! No surprise at all that his success with "Something More than Free" is helping out "Southeastern". Those that are just hearing of him are getting the "old sitcom feel". Jason Isbell to people who just discovered his music is something similar to a show like the "Walking Dead" was/is. Once you get into a season (or album) you realize how great it is and just have to buy/watch another.

I happened to catch most of this earlier this morning...was really great to find out more about Jason and I learned so much from this that makes me appreciate his personal journey. I especially like the line his mom mentions about his songwriting and to be careful what you talk about around him or otherwise you'll end up in one of his songs lol. The fall and rise of Jason Isbell
