When I say most Americans have already heard Thriller, I have no data to back that up, it is, like you said, an opinion based on my own perception, but I guess "most people" here would agree it's a preety popular song. I guess we might be caught up in the semantics of these terms, and can't find expressions with more accurate literal meanings to get these ideas across. When I think of "general public" and even "most people", I always think of my own parents. I doubt my mother, for example, would know or recognize anything related to Mariah Carey. My father might, because he's slightly more in tune with pop culture, especially from the 90s when I still lived at home. A lot of my mother's friends would probably be more in line with her awareness. I know they aren't representative of "average" late-50s people but I guess that's kind of the point. What is average? When people here say general public, what's the criteria? I agree it comes down to semantics but based on some of the discussions (and arguments) that have taken place here over the years, I feel like so much stake is put on this whole idea of "general public" when in reality, I doubt any record label relies on that idea anymore. It's all about demographics. So in looking at The Weeknd's popularity, awareness has spread from his core demographic to include other groups of people who previously didn't know of him. The Arcade Fire were stars or leaders of their core demographic for nearly a decade when others barely knew who they were or hadn't even heard of them before. It's kind of fascinating, when you think about it. I'm not American, so again these are just assumptions, but I assumed most people in the US would have heard about Mariah Carey or listened to some of her songs. 1. She's been around for one quarter of a century, so even if your parents are older now, they were probably part of the music-consuming public when she started. 2. She's been heavily featured on TV and magazines throughout these decades, and probably on one of the TV shows your mom is likely to watch, be it Oprah, The View, E! News, American Idol, etc. Now I know there are people in the US who don't own TV sets and never listen to music, but I assume they account for a small percentage of the population. But if you're talking about other countries then, yeah, I don't think Mariah Carey is that famous worldwide.

But if you're talking about other countries then, yeah, I don't think Mariah Carey is that famous worldwide. I'm sure most people have heard of her. But then how many people are aware of her compared to how many people would recognize her to see her or hear her? And while I'm sure my mother is just a part of a small subset of people who I doubt are familiar enough with her to know who she is, I'm also sure there are people like that scattered across the country/continent/world. I'm sure there are people who don't know who the Beatles or Elvis are either. I think we take for granted that these people do exist. But all that is probably beyond the point. I'm sure when "general public" is used on Pulse, it is referring to the slightly more specific demographic of 15-45 year olds who consume popular music, or at least have some awareness to it, at least somewhat in their lives.

Am I the only one who think CFMF will be blocked by Cheerleader? CFMF is really slowing down, and they should have released the music video now I think Can't Feel My Face has a little more time than you think. Once that video is finally released, it should pick things up in streaming and there'll be an upward effect everywhere else. Although the sooner the Weeknd releases the video, the better.

The Hot 100 was fast moving in the pre-Soundscan days. Back when #1's would regularly spend 16-20 weeks on the chart.

Of the 48 top ten entries which peaked in 2014, 25 spent at least 10 or more weeks within the top 10 (52%). Of the 27 peaking so far in 2015, 9 have spent more than ten weeks in the top 10 (33%), with only 7 songs less than 10 weeks still in the top 10. By this time in 2014, we had 28 top 10 hits, 15 of which spent 10 or more weeks in the top 10 (53%).
In 2014, 26 songs peaked within the top 5 (54%), while so far this year only 14 peaked within the top 5 (51%). By this time in 2014, we had 28 top 10 hits, 19 of which were top 5 hits (67%).
I wonder how this will look at the end of the year.

Manually submitted playlists are less accurate and can be manipulated.
As far as singles sales, we could do that today, the current top 5 on Hot 100 Singles Sales (7/25 chart)
1. Buy Me A Boat - Chris Janson (debuted at #1) 2. Raising Hell - Josh Graham 3. Sirens - Sublime With Rome 4. Livin' In A Small Town - Sixth Generation 5. Sauce - Lil' George
Anyone heard of these?

So would people rather fast moving charts that aren't accurate or accurate charts that are less exciting to watch? Because if it's the former, that's why you should make a personal chart.

I personally don't of course but I've seen complaints especially in the UK when they decided to count streaming.. But without streaming chart will lose all accuracy within months and it would had been the physical/digital situation all over again. That's how fast streaming is growing.

to be fair a lot of the whole "boring" perception could be that lots of us follow the charts a lot more than normal, so a lot of the time what's new in the top ten is already expected, so it just seems a lot more boring than it actually is

Predictions for tomorrow/this week:
-The margins between Cheerleader and Can't Feel My Face are going to tighten; Face's radio is doing better and sales are neck-to-neck; it's probably going to be #2 as long as See You Again's radio and streaming presence start their gradual crash.
-Watch Me could recover to #4, as Bad Blood is losing steam with each passing week.
-Fight Song should advance to #6 or #7, now that its radio presence is undeniable and sales remain solid.
-The Hills is a shoo-in for top ten this week, with its sales receiving a major boost. Of the two songs likely to go, I'm placing bets on Where Are U Now, as both of the past weeks had residual sales from the music video's debut inflating it.
-679, if it doesn't gain, should remain in the top 30 with extremely strong sales.
-Marvin Gaye could surge to the top half; sales have been gaining unexpectedly fast lately.

wow so Mariah blocked Rihanna's pon de replay and blocked Monica's one of them days, biggie's one more chance and shaggy's bombastic.
good to know...I still want to know which song block Mariah's anytime you need a friend from hitting top 10 (at the time I think it was her only song to not chart top 10 and it peaked at 12).

Even blocked her own "Shake It Off" Anytime You Need a Friend peaked at #12 for three weeks. Blocked from hitting top 10 by The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Stay (I Missed You) (From "Reality Bites"), Can You Feel The Love Tonight (From "The Lion King"), If You Go and Fantastic Voyage.

I still find it funny that Mariah blocked the girl who's catching up to her in #1's
