Tyrese Scores His First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart

Nearly 17 years after Tyrese made his Billboard chart debut, the singer/actor achieves his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with the arrival of Black Rose.

The set blooms at No. 1 on the chart dated Aug. 1 with 77,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 16, according to Nielsen Music. Black Rose was released July 10 on Tyrese's own Voltron Recordz label, through Capitol Music Group's independent services division Caroline.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The Aug. 1 chart will be posted in full to Billboard's Web sites on Tuesday, July 21.

The latest chart is the first Billboard 200 to use Nielsen Music's new tracking week that runs Friday through Thursday. Previously, the week ran Monday through Sunday. The change was made due to the music industry deciding to release new albums on Friday each week, instead of the traditional Tuesday.

Tyrese arrived on Billboard's charts on the Aug. 8, 1998-dated R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart with "Nobody Else." It was the first of so far 20 hits on the tally for the entertainer, who is currently on the list with the Black Rose cut "Shame." (It rose 17-13 on the most recently published chart, dated July 25.)

Black Rose is Tyrese's sixth album and third to reach the top 10. He also hit the region with 2011's Open Invitation (debut and peak at No. 9) and 2001's 2000 Watts (debut/peak at No. 10).

Tyrese also co-stars in 2015's highest-grossing film globally, Furious 7, which has earned $1.5 billion at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. It's also the fourth highest-grossing film ever, worldwide. Furious 7's soundtrack spent a week at No. 1 on the Billboard, dated April 25. (Tyrese, however, did not appear on that album.)

Back on the new Billboard 200, Taylor Swift's 1989 holds at No. 2 with 55,000 units (down 21 percent). This is the album's 38th consecutive week in the top 10 -- its entire chart run.

Meek Mill's Dreams Worth More Than Money slips to No. 3 after two frames atop the list. It moves 53,000 units.

The Kidz Bop Kids bow at No. 4 with Kidz Bop 29, shifting 38,000 units. All of the numbered Kidz Bop albums since Kidz Bop 18 have debuted in the top 10. In total, the brand has racked up 22 top 10 efforts. The new collection features kid-friendly (and kid-sung) covers of contemporary pop hits like Swift's "Style" and Wiz Khalifa's Furious 7 smash "See You Again."

Ed Sheeran's X descends 4-5 with 34,000 units (down 42 percent). The former No. 1 album is currently in its ninth straight frame in the top 10, and has never been outside of the top 30 in its 56 weeks on the list.

Pop/rock band R5 debuts at No. 6 with its second full-length album, Sometime Last Night (31,000 units). It's the highest-charting set so far for the group, which previously hit the chart with Loud (EP) (No. 69 in 2013), Louder (No. 24 in 2013) and Heart Made Up On You (EP) (No. 36 in 2014). The quintet comprises four siblings (Riker, Rocky, Ross and Rydel Lynch) along with drummer Ellington Ratliff. Ross Lynch co-stars on Disney Channel's Austin & Ally series and its Teen Beach TV movies.

Two Austin & Ally soundtracks, filled with Ross Lynch-sung tunes, have charted on the Billboard 200. In addition, both Teen Beach soundtracks -- again, boasting lots of Lynch tunes -- have reached the top 10. The first, Teen Beach Movie, hit No. 3 in 2013. Its sequel, Teen Beach 2, reached No. 10 earlier in 2015.

Rounding out the top 10 are Sam Hunt's Montevallo (5-7 with 30,000 units, down 33 percent), Meghan Trainor's Title (11-8 with 22,000 units; down 39 percent), Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late (13-9 with 20,000 units; down 35 percent) and Maroon 5's V (steady at No. 10 with 19,000 units; down 47 percent).

Tyrese debuts on the charts with "Black Rose."

Tyrese dethrones Meek Mill for the top spot on the Billboard Top 100 Chart. Meek Mill remains at #2. Nicki Minaj drops a few spots, but remains in the top 10 of Rap & R&B albums, while Kendrick Lamar drops out.

Tyrese Debuts at #1

Tyrese debuted at #1 with Black Rose. This is the singer's sixth studio album and his first to reach the top spot on the chart. The project sold 83,181 albums and saw 83,181 units of total activity. The soundtrack for Tyrese's film, Furious 7, dropped down the charts to the #44 spot, but remains in the top 10 Rap & R&B sales.

Meek Mill Loses Top Spot

Meek Mill now has the #2 album in the country with Dreams Worth More Than Money. The album sold 63,459 total units, significantly less than the six-digit figures the project saw the past two weeks.

Nicki Minaj Slides Down The Charts

Nicki Minaj's Pinkprint drops down to the #29 spot on the chart. She started The Pinkprint Tour this weekend, which features boyfriend Meek Mill.

This week’s report features Sam Hunt (pictured) at #1 and much, much more.

This week settles back down after the 11 day tracking period of sales charts to a regular 7 day chart and as such, Sam Hunt returns to #1 with Montevallo. The Gold-certified album has now scanned nearly 643k to date. At #2 is Zac Brown Band’s Jekyll+Hyde. The album has now scanned nearly 445k and will hit Gold-certification levels from the RIAA soon. At #3 is Kacey Musgraves’ Pageant Material, the album has now scanned over 89k to date while Little Big Town’s Pain Killer, an album which has scanned nearly 300k to date. Eric Church rounds out the Top 5 with The Outsiders. The album sits at #8 with sales now scanned over 1 million (it’s already certified Platinum).

Top Ten Recap

Now Country 8 sits at #6 with nearly 69k albums scanned. Landing at #7 is the Platinum-certified Just As I Am from Brantley Gilbert with sales of 867k to date. Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

This week’s edition of Metal By Numbers is an important one as it’s the first one to be posted after the record industry’s shift to new music Fridays. Plus, we have a Between The Buried And Me album in the top 10, which is pretty damn cool when you consider the kinds of albums/bands that normally make it that high. There’s also a couple of summer festival boosts, mostly from Warped Tour because, well, it’s Warped Tour.

Notable Debuts:

Between The Buried And Me, Coma Ecliptic (Metal Blade) #6, 18,525 sold

The band’s seventh studio album hits the top 10, marking its best debut yet.



Cradle of Filth, Hammer of the Witches (Nuclear Blast) #65, 3,575 sold

Cradle of Filth’s eleventh album is its highest charting yet in the US.



Phinehas, Till the End (Artery) #73, 3,300 sold

This is the third LP from this California metalcore act.



Palisades, Mind Games (Rise) #193, 1,350 sold

This electronic post-hardcore act from (where else?) New Jersey releases its second album.



For All Eternity, Metanoia (Facedown) 910 sold

The second album from this melodic Aussiecore band.



Unleash The Archers, Time Stands Still (Napalm) 320 sold

This Canadian act’s third album is its first release on a major label.

This is still raking it in despite dropping by 64%. Up to 183,000 sold.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Eric Church's 'Outsiders' Hits 1 Million Sold

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the Aug. 1 chart:

— Kidz Bop Kids, Kidz Bop 29 – No. 4 — Kidz Bop Kids debut at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with Kidz Bop 29, shifting 38,000 units (pure album sales totaled 36,000 of that sum). All of the numbered Kidz Bop albums since Kidz Bop 18 have debuted in the top 10. In total, the brand has racked up 22 top 10 efforts. The new set features kid-friendly (and kid-sung) covers of contemporary pop hits like Wiz Khalifa’s Furious 7 smash “See You Again.” Kidz Bop 29 also opens at No. 1 on the Kid Albums chart, marking the brand’s 51st No. 1.

— R5, Sometime Last Night – No. 6 — R5 logs its highest charting album yet, as their second full-length set Sometime Last Night bows at No. 6. The group features musician/actor Ross Lynch -- co-star of Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally TV series and Teen Beach musical films. In total, the combined sales of R5’s four albums (two EPs and two full-length sets), three Austin & Ally soundtracks (filled with Lynch-sung tunes) and two Teen Beach albums (again, enhanced with Lynch) stand at 1 million. In addition, Lynch has sold 1.8 million sold downloads, while R5 has moved another 919,000.

R5 recently celebrated its first airplay chart hit, as “Let’s Not Be Alone Tonight,” peaked at No. 38 on the Pop Songs list dated May 2.

— Eric Church, The Outsiders - No. 31 — The country singer celebrates his second million-selling album, as The Outsiders reaches one million sold in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. The album -- his fourth studio effort -- sold another 7,000 copies in the week ending July 16, bringing its cumulative sum to 1.007 million. Church’s biggest selling album remains his third studio set, Chief, which has moved 1.86 million since its release in 2011.

— Various Artists, 2015 Warped Tour Compilation - No. 49 — Sales of the album generated at stops of the annual tour -- this year’s trek launched in earnest on June 19 in Pomona, Calif. -- push the set’s 69 percent overall unit gain. The U.S. leg of the tour wraps Aug. 8 in Auburn, Wash.

— Years & Years, Communion – No. 47 — British pop/electronic trio Years & Years sees its debut album bow at No. 47 with 10,000 units earned. (Of that, pure album sales equaled just under 9,000 copies.) Back in their home country, the group earned a No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart with Communion, as the title debuted atop the tally. Back in June, Billboard tipped Years & Years as an act to watch for in our regular Tomorrow’s Hits feature, noting how their song “King” was beginning to take off. The track, which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists chart, has also reached the top 40 on the Pop Songs airplay chart and the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Communion also arrives at No. 1 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

It was on sale for $2 on Google a couple weeks ago, and it kept around a couple extra days that were in the next tracking week. Obviously now it's back to normal price.

Gotcha. That makes sense. I suppose an album like doesn't fall into the 'usual' catalog titles (like GH and 'true' classic albums).

Billboard published the numbers below in its July 24 bulletin. Because of the change in the chart week, comparison to last year is going to be distorted. The 2014 numbers shown are for week 28, the 2015 numbers are for week 29. Week 28 in 2015 consisted of just 4 days - Monday July 13 - Thursday July 16. Week 29 YTD sales in 2014 were 133.5m, 6% higher than this year's total.
