I love this on first listen. It's kinda reminding me of the 90's (IDK if anyone else gets that). Welcome back my Country Queen!!

I think the only reason people are comparing it Miranda is because Carrie's style is usually different than hers, and Carrie normally doesn't release songs in that twangy vein like Miranda does. So it's just a comparison and I don't think people are "pitting them against each other" (myself included). While I don't think anyone here is doing that, 14887fan said that he saw that happening on Twitter enough to get riled up and comment on it, so it has to be happening somewhere. I personally haven't seen it for myself (don't have a Twitter), but I'd probably rather not because I too would be upset by it. I'm routinely irritated by country music fans commenting on Facebook posts enough as it is.

I heard this on the The Highway today and it does sound great on the radio -- I think it's a perfect late summer/early fall release. I'm not that caught up on the lyrics as some are but I really do think the production on the chorus is overdone, to where the melody is muffled. I'm not going to get too bothered by that though since I could make the same criticism on many songs getting released to radio these days.
I was slightly surprised to see Carrie debut at #50 on the MB rolling chart today. I was thinking a debut just outside the top 50, but 600 spins and over 3.6 million in audience was quite the day 1 debut for a mid to late afternoon release.

Ha, sabre14, I was just about to say I heard this on the radio (local terrestrial - XM car is getting an oil change) and it sounds terrific. My only nitpick is how she sings "silver platter" in the second verse. It's like half of platter is missing. (Now you'll all hate me for pointing it out, haha!)

So it's just a comparison and I don't think people are "pitting them against each other" (myself included). If you'd like links to tweets and such, I can absolutely give those to you. As I said (and indulge noted above), it was on Twitter, and it frustrated me. It reminded me of the pop music world, where women generally run the show and fans make it out as if Katy Perry is out for Lady Gaga's blood, who is out for Rihanna's blood, who is out for Nicki Minaj who is out for Taylor Swift who is out for ___________. Not to say that I haven't taken part in things like those in the past (recall the endless Kelly v. Carrie battles years ago), but gradually growing out of it and then seeing it happen in a format where there are, quite literally, two leading women was reason enough for me to get upset by it. Anyways, back to the song. Carrie & Co. teamed up with IveyCake Cupcakes and has not only sent out "Smoke Break"-themed cupcakes across Nashville to different radio stations, music affiliates (AllAccess, Bobby Bones, Sirius XM, etc.), but also made it so IveyCake is traveling all day passing out the cupcakes to anyone who wants, free of charge.

Aside from the production and 'type' of song this is I think the vocal sounds like Miranda. If I didn't know Carrie's voice, and I just heard a snatch of this, I would save it was Miranda. Her phrasing is the same and everything.

As a big Carrie and Miranda fan, it still annoys me to see the constant comparisons between them.
Both women are extremely talented (and different artists), who are a breath of fresh air to a stale genre.
I love that they both make excellent music and don't make music based on what other people expect of them, and frankly, both of them are the reason I'm still clinging to Country music by a hair.
It's really saying something when TWO females can only be at the top (among more than half a dozen males), and yet people still insist on comparing them to each other, as if one HAS to triumph the other.
It's telling that the Country listening audience is predominantly female, yet the audience is supporting few female artists, and then when two make it, the fanbases turn it into an all-out war.
It's 2015, it's just gross.
@drag27 also brought up an excellent point, which reminds me of when Carrie mentioned she was inspired by Steven Tyler during CMT Crossroads, and she carried that with her into the creation of "Good Girl."
Artist's influences and ideas rub off on each other all the time (whether subconsciously or not), and I'm sure Carrie took a few notes from Miranda when they worked together.
Anyway, I've been listening to this a lot, and I'm liking it more with each listen.
It gets a bit too bombastic my tastes before and after the bridge, but other than that, I'm loving it.
This will undoubtedly be big for Carrie, and I'm really relieved she went for something completely sonically/lyrically different for her.
I love that she's been tackling such a wide array of topics lately (SITW, LTG, and SB, among others), and the one thing I really wanted with this single was something substantial and different, and she delivered on both counts.

I'd love to see this hit #1 on iTunes, even if just for an hour! It's still gaining :)

I never thought I'd say this but the more I listen to this I am really loving this. As many other members on this forum know, I have been underwoods biggest critics because I haven't liked her recent direction but, not only is this song perfect for her style but the lyrics are so relatable to me.

How high have other Country A-Listers got on iTunes?
Luke? Blake? Miranda? FGL? Kenny? Keith? Brad (just kidding)?

This song is decent. It is not her best work by far and it is not her worst music yet. I think that she could have done better and honestly I don't really want to hear this on the radio.

Country Universe review:“Smoke Break” is so wonderfully adult and so refreshingly grounded in reality. The characters aren’t there to play out a three act tragedy or to be stand-ins for whatever caricature of small town country living is fashionable at this given moment. They’re the boring working folks who just don’t get songs written about them very often. Underwood effectively tells their truth, simply by acknowledging how difficult it is sometimes to do everything that is required and expected of you. My favorite though... I've written before that Carrie Underwood radiates humanity. But that’s just a fancy way of saying she’s got a whole lot of empathy, and as she continues to develop as a writer, she’s getting just as good at telling the everyday stories as she is at telling the grandiose epics.
She has the finest singing voice of her generation, but her greatest gift is her ability to express empathy for others through song.

I'm ashamed that I can't remember, but has Carrie ever hit #1 on the iTunes all-genre chart before?
Carrie is SOOO CLOSE to #1!!! She's at .97 of "Can't Feel My Face"... Aka: for every 100 copies CFMF sells, SB sells 97. SO CLOSE!

I doubt if this great time will match the 12-week sprint to #1 of JTTW, but it should definitely get there.

Her last update only increased by .0085... Hopefully she can pick up the pace to at least take over #1 for an update or two.. Still in the dark green though! *fingers crossed*!

Crossing my fingers for a #1 on the all-genre iTunes chart! I've never had a Carrie single have to grow on me, so it was a weird feeling. It's a solid "B-" now.

I loved it from the start, and it's still growing on me! If you haven't already, play it in the car; turn it up and jam! That did the trick for my brother, it's definitely a sing-along car jam kinda song. Edit: doesn't look like she'll make It to #1, she's starting to slip a bit as of the last update. :( oh well, SO CLOSE!

It seems some of the Carrie fan base pits her against ANY other female artist. It used to be Carrie vs. Taylor and Miranda. And now, it's back, stupidly enough.

Smoke Broke is stuck at #2 all genre. Damn, most of her lead singles are always stuck at #2, CC, GG, and now SB.

If this gets to #1 fast enough, is it possible they'd release a 2nd single before the album comes out?
