Been listening to Luke's new one so haven't gotten a chance to really dig into this one, but I have listened to samples of each and this guy actually has some talent. It absolutely blows my mind that his first single was such garbage. I figured he'd be just another mildly talented boring bro but you guys should give some of these songs a listen.

I've only listened to this one time through but the song that stood out for me the first time through was "Real Men Love Jesus". Hopefully it's a single at some point. Too bad he's being overshadowed by Luke Bryan's Kill The Lights album this week.

Lol, I have to wonder how the sales for this album will look. My local Walmart had two whole rows of nothing but Luke Bryan in the new releases section and none of this. They had like 2 copies of this in the "R" section along with 1 copy of his EP. Maybe there's more to him than meets the eye (idk, I haven't listened to this) but then again, in today's country, who couldn't you say that about? Hell even Chase Rice has an actual phenomenal song. "Kiss You In The Morning" may have given this guy a No.1 hit, but it sure as hell didn't give him any buzz.

I agree with you, but unfortunately this is the type of schlock you need to serve country radio in order to get your foot in the door. Once your foot is in the door, then you can start to think about releasing a "Drink A Beer", "Girl Crush" or a "What We Ain't Got". The problem is that process can sometimes take years. If we were to get a honest interview from Michael Ray, I'd bet a $100 that he would admit this song isn't the type of material he identifies with, let alone wants to record. Chase Rice basically admitted this himself. But if you want to break into today's market, you're gonna have to record some same type of song, unless you luck out like Cam or Chris Janson and get the OTV nod. That's why I never really blame these artists as much, but instead blame radio for letting it get to this point. There definitely seems to be some more solid options on this album then the first single would imply, so hopefully Michael and his team pick something a little more real and meatier then "Kiss You In The Morning" (which I don't hate, but could care less if I never hear again).

Haven't heard this album yet, but I'd be willing to bet this does no better than Canaan Smith's opening week sales.

Michael Ray to open with 11-13k sold in first week Source Shame, because there's some legitimately good material on here. Maybe between this and the lackluster debut for Canaan Smith, the labels will start to realize that one overplayed crap song isn't enough to generate buzz for an album. Not from these current country pop fans.

Not from these current country pop fans. Yes - the current demo they're catering to (they being labels via radio) is a single-buying demo (and streaming). I think that the opening numbers for Ashley, Jason Isbell, Alan Jackson, Kacey, etc show that the core country fan is still willing to buy a full album up front. The operative word there being "country" fans. Obviously artists with established bases - Luke, Blake, Jason, etc - will continue to sell, but I think it's becoming increasingly obvious that the current demo isn't going to remain sustainable for country.

I'm one of the few who doesn't think "Kiss You in the Morning" is awful... I actually kind of like it and it grows on me the more I hear it on the radio *ducks* lol, but man I really like this guy's voice A LOT. Like, his vocals are really, really good, imo. There's some great songs on this album, and even though it isn't a mind-blowing album or anything, I do enjoy it and will probably be getting this at some point, though it's going to end up on my Christmas wishlist rather than being a direct purchase like Maddie & Tae's later this month or Ashley Monroe's or Kacey Musgraves' from the last couple months, i.e. But yeah, I'm feeling this overall, and I'm pretty excited about "Real Men Love Jesus" being the second single because I LOVE it.

I'm with you on this...I'm actually surprised at the negative reactions I've read about KYITM...I've thought all along it was a good song and a solid fit for country radio. That having been said, this is a decent enough album...not my favorite of the year...but there's enough good material on here that I should have no problem enjoying a few more singles, including RMLJ.
