'Descendants' Soundtrack Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart News /
By Keith Caulfield | August 09, 2015 3:00 PM EDT
The soundtrack to Disney Channel's Descendants debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, marking the fourth soundtrack to hit No. 1 in 2015. The set starts with 42,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 6.
It's the companion album to the TV movie of the same name, which premiered July 31 on the network.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 22-dated chart (where Descendants debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The arrival of the Descendants album atop the chart came in a very soft week for both new album releases and sales. The soundtrack's overall 42,000 unit total is the smallest weekly sum for a No. 1 album since the chart began ranking titles by equivalent units in Dec. 2014.
Further, of its 42,000 start, just 30,000 were pure album sales. (It also enters at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart.) That's the lowest sales figure for a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, or Top Album Sales, since Nielsen Music began powering the charts' rankings in 1991. It falls below the previous low, when Amos Lee's Mission Bell debuted at No. 1 with just over 40,000 sold (week ending Jan. 30, 2011).
The Billboard 200 should perk up next week, when Luke Bryan's Kill the Lights and Dr. Dre's Compton (both released on Aug. 7) are expected to post strong debuts at the top of the list.
Descendants is a fairy tale-inspired live action film about the children of some of Disney's classic villains. The movie was directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega (who also helmed the three High School Musical films).
The music-driven film earned 10.5 million total viewers in its first four days, according to Disney. That makes it the fourth biggest cable TV movie since 2007, behind three other Disney Channel films: High School Musical 2 (18.2 million), Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (13.3 million) and Teen Beach Movie (11.9 million).
Descendants is the fourth soundtrack to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2015 (following Empire, Furious 7 and Pitch Perfect 2) -- the most to lead the list since 2009. That year, four soundtracks also topped the chart: Hannah Montana: The Movie, Fabolous' Loso's Way, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Michael Jackson's This Is It.
As for the rest of the Billboard 200's new top 10, Future's former No. 1 DS2 holds at No. 2 with 37,000 units (down 30 percent) and Taylor Swift's 1989 rises 4-3 with 35,000 (down 25 percent). Ed Sheeran's X climbs 6-4 with 30,000 (down 13 percent). Sam Hunt's Montevallo ascends 9-5 with just over 27,000 (down just 1 percent). Last week's No. 1, Jill Scott's Woman, slides to No. 6 with 27,000 (down 57 percent).
Lil Dicky's Professional Rapper is the second and final debut in the top 10, arriving at No. 7 with 26,000 units (of which 22,000 are pure album sales). The comedian/rapper's set was funded by a Kickstarter campaign, which also fuels its debut sales week.
In addition, Professional Rapper enters at No. 1 on the Comedy Albums chart with the largest sales week for a comedy album in just over a year. The last to sell more in a week was when "Weird Al" Yankovic's Mandatory Fun was in its second week at No. 1 (week ending July 27, 2014; chart dated Aug. 9) with 33,000 sold.
Twenty One Pilots' Blurryface zooms 20-8 with 25,000 units (up 45 percent). The rise is owed to the vinyl LP release of the set on July 31. The LP edition sold 7,000 copies for the week, aiding the album's overall 75 percent sales gain (to 17,000 copies), and enables its No. 1 debut on the Vinyl Albums chart.
Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door reenters the top 10 on the Billboard 200, jumping back on the list at No. 9 after it was reeisued on July 31. The album, first released in 1979, shifted 24,000 units for the week (23,000 from pure album sales). In Through the Out Door originally spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1979, and was last on the chart in 1980.
Closing out the new top 10 is Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late, which moves 13-10 with 23,000 (up 6 percent).

Probably didn't help that the movie was nearly universally panned. As cheesey and over the top as the high school Musical movies were, they hit the demographic right. Descedants felt cheap and rushed.

Woo, new record for lowest pure album sales ever for a #1.
Also, for figures in case the article gets lost to the sands of time, here's the summary:
#01 - NEW - Descendants - Soundtrack - 42,000 (30,000) #02 - #02 - DS2 - Future - 37,000 (??,???) #03 - #04 - 1989 - Taylor Swift - 35,000 (??,???) #04 - #06 - X - Ed Sheeran - 30,000 (??,???) #05 - #09 - Montevallo - Sam Hunt - 27,000-27,500 (??,???) #06 - #01 - Woman - Jill Scott - 27,000 (??,???) #07 - NEW - Professional Rapper - Lil' D***y - 26,000 (22,000) #08 - #20 - Blurryface - Twenty One Pilots - 25,000 (17,000) (Vinyl: 7,000) #09 - R-E - In Through the Out Door - Led Zeppelin - 24,000 (23,000) #10 - #13 - If You're Reading This, It's Too Late - Drake - 23,000 (??,???)

Probably didn't help that the movie was nearly universally panned. As cheesey and over the top as the high school Musical movies were, they hit the demographic right. Descedants felt cheap and rushed. Confused... The TV ratings were strong, and the album markedly outsold the Teen Beach 2 soundtrack (and obliterated initial industry forecasts). The TEA+SEA boost is solid as well (and also way better than expected - as neither Hits nor Billboard initially expected this to receive any real boost from track sales). The problem with this week isn't how Descendants performed -- it's the fact that nothing else was able to perform better.

(Editor's note: Nielsen Music revised its data on Aug. 9, after our initial story was posted. The unit totals for a few titles have since changed, as have the rankings of two albums in the top 10.)
...if they're relatively aware Nielsen don't finalize until at least late Sunday, why do they keep posting early on Sunday?! Anyway:
#01 - NEW - Descendants - Soundtrack - 42,000 (30,000) #02 - #02 - DS2 - Future - 37,000 (??,???) #03 - #04 - 1989 - Taylor Swift - 35,000 (??,???) #04 - #06 - X - Ed Sheeran - 30,000 (??,???) #05 - #01 - Woman - Jill Scott - 27,000-27,500 (??,???) #06 - #09 - Montevallo - Sam Hunt - 27,000 (??,???) #07 - NEW - Professional Rapper - Lil' D***y - 26,000 (22,000) #08 - #20 - Blurryface - Twenty One Pilots - 25,000 (17,000) (Vinyl: 7,000) #09 - R-E - In Through the Out Door - Led Zeppelin - 24,000 (23,000) #10 - #13 - If You're Reading This, It's Too Late - Drake - 23,000 (??,???)
Looks like the finalization just broke the really close two; no estimates have changed otherwise.

LOL at the thread title- and that there already was a revision. So messy when BB reports historical album sales figures, as pure-album-sales info is what the albums chart was for nearly five decades, whatever the methodology. Even in spots for the archives searches, it lists some pre-Dec. 2014 titles as charting on both Top Album Sales and the Billboard 200.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6656838/drake-million-selling-album-if-youre-reading-thisDrake's 'If You're Reading This' Becomes First Million-Selling Album Released in 2015By Keith Caulfield | August 10, 2015 4:13 PM EDT The only other million-seller this year is Taylor Swift's "1989" album, which dropped in 2014. Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late becomes the first album released in 2015 to sell a million copies in the U.S., as the set sold another 8,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 7, according to Nielsen Music. Its cumulative total now stands at 1.007 million. The album was released on Feb. 12 through Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. If You're Reading This It's Too Late is the second album to sell a million copies in 2015, after Taylor Swift's 1989 (which was released in 2014). 1989 has sold 1.463 million in 2015 and 5.124 million total. If You're Reading This It's Too Late is Drake's fourth million-selling album, following Nothing Was the Same (released in 2013; 1.72 million), Take Care (2011; 2.26 million) and Thank Me Later (2010; 1.8 million).

Billboard probably re-ran the last week's chart later in the week because in my original bookkeeping Jason Aldean was #59 but this week chart says his last week's position was #60.
This is so frustrating.. I can't keep eye on the chart in daily basis just to watch if they have made corrections.

Charts are posted for this week. I will post more album chart corrections as they come in this week. For the next three Tuesdays, I have vacations or other commitments, so someone else will need to post.
FYI - ukmix posts 3-4 times the volume of charts that I do, if all else fails, you guys can copy from them, unless someone else wants to take them directly from the Billboard site

www.metalinsider.net/columns/metal-by-numbers/metal-by-numbers-appendix-2015s-biggest-selling-metal-so-farMetal by Numbers appendix: 2015’s biggest selling metal so farPosted by Bram Teitelman on August 12, 2015 If you’re a regular reader of Metal Insider (which come on now, you should be), you’re likely familiar with “Metal by Numbers,” a weekly look at album sales for hard rock and metal albums. Streaming has changed the game, so to speak, with numbers decreasing almost weekly. In a week like this one where the #1 album in the country has sold less than 30,000 copies, that’s pretty obvious. Yet people still buy music. We’re going to take a look at the biggest selling records of 2015. There isn’t a ton of metal and hard rock on here, but spoiler alert: some of them came out long before 2015. Breaking Benjamin, Dark Before Dawn (Hollywood Records) 209,000 sold Looks like their comeback is a success. They have the 37th biggest- selling album of the year so far. AC/DC, Rock or Bust (Columbia Records) 143,400 sold This is no bust. While the band sold more albums last year when it was released, that’s a solid haul, and the 63rd biggest selling album of 2015 so far. Marilyn Manson, The Pale Emperor (Loma Vista) 124,200 sold While on the low side of what Manson generally sells, it’s one of the few rock albums released in 2015 to be on this list. Halestorm, Into the Wild Life (Atlantic) 114,500 sold Lzzy Hale and friends have another success on their hands. Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti (Atlantic) 112,400 sold The re-releases of the band’s catalog is likely helping things out. AC/DC, Back in Black (Columbia) 110,000 sold This is one of the biggest selling albums of all time, and will probably keep selling as long as there are sporting events. Metallica, Master of Puppets (Blackened Recordings) 107,800 sold Interesting that this is outselling the Black Album. At least this year. Nickelback, No Fixed Address (Republic) 101,000 sold Last year’s album is the band’s lowest-selling in recent history – but they still have 2015’s 104th biggest-selling album. Foo Fighters, Sonic Highways (RCA) 87,800 sold Even though the HBO series and album were released last year, this continues to sell. Kid Rock, Devil Without a Cause (Atlantic) 86,000 sold Kid’s Atlantic debut is diamond. That’s 10 million copies. Which is likely why it’s racked up almost 100,000 in the first seven months of the year. Nickelback, Dark Horse (Roadrunner) 84,500 sold Wow, another one from Nickelback. Everyone makes fun of them, but they’re laughing all the way to the bank. Slipknot, 5: The Gray Chapter (Roadrunner) 84,000 sold This is has sold 344,000 copies so far, and now we know how many of them were sold this year. Sleeping With Sirens, Madness (Epitaph) 79,200 sold While we have no idea what this band sounds like, there’s almost 80,000 people that do. Guns N’ Roses, Greatest Hits (Interscope) 78,500 sold Turns out that to sell about 100,000 copies/year of your greatest hits album, all you have to do is come out with the best debut album ever. Nirvana, Nevermind (Interscope) 77,250 sold Whether it’s Montage of Heck residual sales, or the fact that this is the defining album of a generation, it keeps selling. Metallica, Metallica (Blackened) 77,100 sold It’s interesting that Master is consistently selling more than the this, the biggest- selling album of the SoundScan era. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin 4 (Atlantic) 75,000 sold This will always sell, but the remastered edition probably has helped out this year. Nirvana, Unplugged In New York (Interscope) 74,000 sold See above.

On the latest Billboard 200 chart (dated Aug. 22), Disney’s Descendants soundtrack opened at No. 1, marking the fourth soundtrack to lead the tally in 2015. The set moved 42,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 6, according to Nielsen Music. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the Aug. 15 chart: — One Direction, Four - No. 49 — The quartet’s fourth album has now sold 1 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. The album shifted another 4,000 copies in the week ending Aug. 6, bringing its cumulative total to just over the million mark. All four of the group’s albums have each sold more than a million. On the latest Billboard 200 chart, Four rises 78-49 in its 38th week on the list. Their best-selling effort is their first album, Up All Night, with 2.05 million sold. It is followed by Take Me Home (2.02 million) and Midnight Memories (1.51 million). Elsewhere on the charts this week, One Direction celebrated the highest debut of 2015 on the Billboard Hot 100, as their new single “Drag Me Down” bowed at No. 3. It’s the lead single from their forthcoming fifth album, due out later this year through SYCO/Columbia Records. — Joss Stone, Water for Your Soul – No. 34 — Joss Stone’s seventh album, Water for Your Soul, starts at No. 34 with 12,000 units and also charts new territory for the singer: it marks her debut on Reggae Albums with its No. 1 bow. — Buddy Guy, Born to Play Guitar - No. 60 — Veteran artist Buddy Guy nabs his 11th chart entry on the Billboard 200 with Born to Play Guitar (No. 60; 9,000 units). The set, which features guests like Joss Stone and Van Morrison, also earns the six-time Grammy Award winner his fifth No. 1 on the Blues Albums chart. — Soundtrack, Home – No. 98 — The July 28 home video release of the animated film sends its companion soundtrack back to the chart. It reenters at No. 98 with 6,000 units earned for the week (up 101 percent). Of that sum, nearly 5,000 were pure album sales (up 111 percent). — Titus Andronicus, The Most Lamentable Tragedy – No. 164 — Rock band Titus Andronicus collects its first No. 1 on a national Billboard chart, as The Most Lamentable Tragedy charges 7-1 on Heatseekers Albums. (It also bows at No. 164 on the Billboard 200.) The set, the group’s fourth studio album and Merge Records debut, vaults to the top of the Heatseekers list in its second chart week due to its irregular release date of Tuesday, July 28. It bowed on the chart from just three days of sales (July 28-30) with 2,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen Music. Then, on the new chart, it rises to No. 1 with 4,000 (up 97 percent) as it tallies its first full week at retail (July 31-Aug. 6). Merge announced The Most Lamentable Tragedy’s release date in April, and stuck by the Tuesday street date even when Friday became the standard new release day on July 10. — Dave Koz, Collaborations: 25th Anniversary Collection – No. 187 — As Dave Koz’s new album starts at No. 187 on the Billboard 200, it also gives the saxophonist a ninth No. 1 on the Contemporary Jazz Albums chart (it debuts atop the list). Koz now ties Fourplay for the second-most No. 1s in the chart’s 28-year history. Only Kenny G has more No. 1s, with 16.
