He’s such a gay baiter. And I thought Nick Jonas was, nah, it’s Charlie.
No thank you, he gives me the pip.

I have mixed feelings about the album. I like the consistency of it and how cohesive it is however I feel like it goes into that territory too far. It's hard to differentiate between some of the songs and there isn't really any wow factor. I personally give it a six out of 10 or something like that.

Eeeesh. The short songs are killing him here.
IMO, Charlie’s strong suit is he knows how to make a super catchy melody, and he doesn’t overcomplicate them - so even though he’s not a great lyricist, and you can just *feel* the buttons being pressed whenever we hear an “electric guitar”, usually his melodies shine. Here, everything is so short and sped up that you have almost no build up to these choruses, and they all feel smooshed one right after another and blend together. Almost none of the songs feel like you have room to breathe and sink in with you. The exception is Smells Like Me, which felt like a release. To me, that was far and away his best track on here. I don’t know who is spearheading these short tracks, but this was such a bad decision. Charlie needs to connect with audiences at this stage in his career, because radio is increasingly hesitant to play him, and he clearly wasn’t interested in taking many sonic risks with this album. And an album full of songs you can’t sink in and breathe with — it makes it a lot harder to connect. This album is about being in the throes of a bad breakup, and a ton of drama —— but he ends up undermining his genuine heartbreak and it just comes across like the heartbreak was really just a bunch of (figurative) noise. There’s catchy stuff here, but it feels like a quick dopamine hit that’s over before you get to really enjoy.
Is this full of enjoyable pop tunes? Sure. Every track is catchy. But is much of this *interesting*? No. Is this going to help him broaden his fanbase? No. Is this going to be an album that connects with a ton of people after a few months? Nah. Voicenotes remains a clearly superior album. And I’m someone that LOVED Girlfriend and really liked Light Switch. To me, this album honestly makes it seem like Charlie Puth, as an artist, just doesn’t have that much to say.

Listened to the first three songs and turned it off because I felt like I was listening to an AI approximation of a human.

And he’s claiming to be receiving so much love on Twitter about it. I wonder how much of that is true.

And he’s claiming to be receiving so much love on Twitter about it. I wonder how much of that is true. I’m sure it is true. This is a good pop album. The problem is that he Tik-Tokized not just a single or two, but the whole album. It’s just hard to see this really connecting with people in a lasting way like how Voicenotes did, because of this. And, like, what is he gonna do live? Play two minute songs? No, he’s gonna most likely stretch them out to the lengths they were supposed to be — I’d HOPE he would do that, anyway — and everyone will go “Oh, I wish we had the studio versions of them”. I just don’t understanding why depriving your artistry, your work, and your fans’ desire to immerse themselves in your work is worth a few extra streams. Besides, like I said, if you don’t give people enough of a complete experience with a song — if you hit it and quit it, so to speak — they’re not gonna care enough to listen to it over and over again. Smells Like Me is the one that has truly been on repeat, and, shocker — it’s the length of a normal song. Edit: And just to be clear, I know it sounds like I’m being slightly dramatic; I’m aware probably about half the songs are over 3 minutes. But it’s the uptempo bops that he lobotomized, and those are what he does best.

I refuse to pay money for someone who made an album on TikTok and, for someone who allegedly has perfect pitch, insists on slathering so much Auto-Tune or whatever he is using on all his vocals. Anyway, it's a cute listen. His best album, but I wish he included the droplets as Target exclusive tracks instead of...a poster, but that's on-brand, at least. That might have persuaded me to buy it. Hell, that's what sold me on Rare, but that album was fantastic without the droplets. I give it a B- because the top 6 are flawless. That's Hilarious Left And Right (I somehow managed to ignore this until the album dropped. What a song. Love the production tricks, too. I will say Charlie is a good producer.) Light Switch Loser (also a full-length song and a better one than Smells Like Me, as well) There's A First Time For Everything (This emo-fied version of Stay works really well.) Charlie Be Quiet Smells Like Me I Don't Think That I Like Her Greenland Bonus Tracks: Tears On My Piano Marks On My Neck When You're Sad I'm Sad ( wavey., I bel you just LOVE this one, sksksksks. Charlie, if ANY song should have been actually sung instead of grinded through an AI filter, it should have been this one. It's pretty, though. Reminds me of third-rate boyband ballads of the late 90's/early 2000 Nowhere: No More Drama

I agree with a lot of the sentiments in this thread that the longer songs in runtime have more time to pull you in and develop where he is wanting to go with the songs.
“Loser” is an easy standout here, it is catchy and sounds like a single to me. I also like “Teardrops on my Guitar,” I mean “Tears on my Piano.”
“Left and Right” remains fantastic and the album overall is pretty good but I won’t revisit about half of it.

I am glad others are calling out the short songs as not having as much substance as they should. I feel whenever I mention I am not a fan of the shorter song era, people act like I should just be happy with what we get. TikTok allowed more musicians to get their music out there but it also harmed the industry some as well (such as the overabundance of short songs).

I really enjoy the album and the length of the songs are perfect for what they are, bubblegum pop.
