Not a fan of this one at all. I hate the way the chorus is a written: "Baby you're a little mind, you're a little mind reader." I don't like how mind-reader is interrupted there. Saying someone is a mind-reader makes sense, but saying they're a mind does not. That's really bad writing, in my opinion.
The arrangement is certainly better than "Hell Of A Night" and "Where It's At", but that's about all I can say for this one. Dustin gets another thumbs down from me.

Yep Yep was at least catchy, interestingly produced, and had a somewhat noble if unoriginal message. But both Hell of a Night and this one are both the D-list Jason Aldean wannabe crap I usually only hear from forgettable cookie cutter no-names who are independent, Canadian, or both.
I predicted half of the lyrics to this song on the first listen. Does that make me a mind reader of Mind Reader?

Wellp, y'all know I'm a fan and I of course, love the song. So I'm glad to see it's going up faster..he's starting to pick up momentum again whether he's liked here or not. He's opening for Luke yet again next year and he just started his very first headlining tour like two weeks ago. Last night he played a sold out 4,000 people show at The Fillmore in Denver, Colorado. Good for him!!

I'm glad this is off to a good start thus far. This is his best single for me since his debut and I just really, really dig this one. I love the production and the prominence of the background vocals during the chorus. It's a total earworm for me and it's becoming one of my favorite male-led singles out there right now.

I think most people on here like Dustin and all will agree that he has one of the better voices in the genre, but again, I think most just want to see him release something with more meat to it, like "Cowboys And Angels". I've enjoyed all 3 singles this era so far though, even if I'm burnt out on "Where Its At" (Seriously, I could never hear that song again and be alright).

Haha, I get what you're saying. I've said this multiple times here already and I'll say it again because it's weird. Y'all love Cowboys and Angels and out of both albums and every song he's ever recorded, that is the ONLY one that I do NOT like!! I've always skipped it, it's always my bathroom break song at his shows, etc. Guess he's just gotta cater to all the different audiences out there. No doubt being on the road with Luke the way he has been has had any influence on things..

The chorus lyric, "Baby you a little mind reader" is probably one of the worst lyrics I've heard over the past year on the radio. I know jhomes87 brought up that line earlier but I find it bad just because its lazy writing, imo. The addition of "Baby" and "little" are cringe-inducing. It's trying to play the lyric off as cool but just comes across as amateurish. The fact the lyric is also "you a little mind reader" instead of "you're a little mind reader" irritates the heck out of me. The entire song sounds like an Aldean album cut and once again, I find myself disliking a Dustin Lynch single.

This seems to have a much more relaxed production than "Hell of a Night", which was straight up "Aldean wannabe". I don't really get an Aldean vibe from this one. The lyrics are still bro clichés to the max, but I think the sound goes down much better.

The steel guitar production in this song is excellent especially in the intro/instrumental break between the first chorus and second verse (it's the same lick) and in the chorus and I really love that about this song. It sounds beautiful and really adds a nice touch. The guitar solo sounds good too. You know I'm a sucker for steel guitar and guitar solos. :)

Everyone knows how I feel about it, so I won't say it again Is this one off to a slower start? There hasn't been much buzz about it yet at all.

Is this one off to a slower start? There hasn't been much buzz about it yet at all. It's only been in the Mediabase top 50 for 12 weeks and is at #27. "Hell Of A Night" (which had a marathon journey to #1) for example was at #40 at 12 week mark, with 1/3rd the total audience. This one is doing just fine.

This one is doing just fine. I'd actually say it's doing great, considering it's out-pacing the album's 2nd single by a long shot. Still, I'm not convinced that this one will climb as high as his last 2 singles did, mostly because it's not likely to sell as well (given that it's the 3rd single from the album) and because we're at the start of a new year, which means a bunch of big new releases in the next few months. That's gonna take its toll on songs like this one as well as Michael Ray's "Real Men Love Jesus", Lee Brice's "That Don't Sound Like You", Brantley Gilbert's "Stone Cold Sober", Maddie & Tae's "Shut Up And Fish", David Nail's "Night's On Fire", Tyler Farr's "Better In Boots", etc.

Heard it on Country radio this week and very impressed! Kinda happy surprised that country radio is so supportive of these undeniably country tunes from Dustin and also the new Michael Ray song. Good to see these young guys finding success releasing songs that are more reflective of what they truly are as artists.

Good to see these young guys finding success releasing songs that are more reflective of what they truly are as artists. I don't feel like this is an undeniably country tune at all. To me it's very much a country-pop/bro-country song. It's got some steel guitar in it, but the flow of both the verses and the chorus sounds very pop-ish to me, or at least it doesn't have the same cadence/flow that I'd expect in a traditional-leaning country song. At best, I see this song as a bro-country song trying to disguise itself as a more neo-traditional type of country song (and I don't mean that as a compliment). I mean, we've got a girl and a guy driving around, the guy comments about her hair and her "little tore up jeans", he calls her a heart stealer, comments on her smile, her lips, her perfume, and then the 2nd verse ends with her whispering in his ear and he suggesting that they "take this party back to my place". Songs that merely describe the outward, physical appearance of a woman (and include riding around in a truck with the possibility of "hooking up" later) all qualify as bro-country songs to me. I know not everyone will feel the same way I do, but "Mind Reader" is definitely a bro-country song to me, or at least "bro-lite".

I'll agree with the notion of this one being bro. In fact, all three singles have been bro in both sound and lyrics. Hoping for something a little deeper from Dustin next time around, or at least something with a little more twang. I loved both "Cowboys and Angels" and "She Cranks My Tractor", the latter being obviously bro but one with an interesting plot and a very twangy sound that I enjoyed.
When I saw Dustin live last year (right in the midst of "Where it's At"'s chart run), he was excellent. However, when he started playing that song it stuck out like a sore thumb in terms of how twangy the rest of his setlist sounded. I think it was the first (and maybe only) time he used a drum pad all concert. *insert sarcastic eye roll*

I find nothing wrong with this, and while I can understand someone feeling opposite of my opinion here, it is noteworthy that marred grammar in this fashion is nothing out of the ordinary for country music, so that's why I don't see a problem with it. Eric Paslay's current single (which I do hate, but for reasons beyond the lyrics) has the hook of "Tonight we high class" and I'm sure I've heard a lot of other examples over the years of things like this, too. One thing that country music tends to do a lot of is the improper use of the double-negative, which is something I do in my own speech from time-to-time, so it also doesn't come up as an issue for me (i.e. "ain't never" to mean "have not"). This one for me is easily the most enjoyable and best release of the album for me thus far and I'm glad it's been off to a solid start. I really like this one a lot, especially because of the melody and production. It definitely feels less "bro-like" than his last two for those reasons, though I still liked his last two singles (particularly "Where It's At") a fair bit, too.

I don't care if Country music has a history/reputation of improper English -- that's not enough of a reason to overlook the lyrics in Dustin's song. The lyric "Baby you a little mind reader" sounds incredibly stupid -- just my own opinion/preference. I also hate "High Class" for reasons other than lyrics, although I don't like that "Tonight we high class" lyric, either. Unfortunately, the use of "ain't" in Country music and the everyday language has become so popular it's now almost an acceptable use of speaking. Even though I don't use "ain't" in my own conversations, I don't cringe when I hear it in a song. "Baby you a little mind reader" on the other hand is laughably bad.

Ain't had become so commonplace that it's actually legitimate word now in the dictionary, I was just saying that using "ain't never" is the problem, since technically saying the two words back-to-back would mean the opposite of what it is used for in a lot of songs. It was just an example I thought I'd bring up. To me, I think occasional bad grammar gives country music some of its charm and I don't find this one laughably bad or cringe-worthy at all, but obviously we don't agree and that's totally fine. :)

My problem isn't so much that the "Baby you a little mind reader" lyric isn't "Baby, you're a little mind reader"...my problem is that it goes "baby you a little mind, yeah baby you a little mind reader". I absolutely hate how the term mind reader is interrupted. So yeah, I don't really mind the fact that he sings "you" when it should be "you're". The part I hate is that he sings "you a little mind" and leaves out the "reader" part. It's just really lazy songwriting, in my opinion.
Nothing on Dustin's sophomore album seems genuine to me. Everything about him is giving off a totally different vibe than he did when he first came onto the scene with "Cowboys and Angels". It's like he's a completely different artist.

What about "Your Daddy's Boots," "American Prayer," or "She Wants A Cowboy?" Those aren't "bro-country" and sound more like the classical DL style!!

Might as well bump this thread, since for one, it's been dormant for a month and change. And, two, this song is top twenty now. And three, I have yet to hear it on the radio here in Nashville. And, I do listen to country radio daily. Is it listenable? Yes, I know, I can youtube it.

I'm glad this one has been doing so well. It really was a great choice for radio and it's nice to see it take off a lot faster than "Hell of a Night," which made such slow progress.

This is probably my favorite single of this album. I've got a soft side for the steel guitar and the lyrics are a little better than "Hell of a Night".
I can't imagine they go with another single from this album. I just saw Dustin open for Luke not too long ago and I think he played a new song. Of course all his songs sounded the same, you couldn't hear a word he was saying and the bass/drums were way too loud. I swear I lost some of my ability to hear that night. My thoughts after that show are that Dustin is going in the wrong direction.
I saw him live right while "Where It's At" was starting out and he was outstanding. Did some covers and some old school stuff and it was apparent when the band started with "Where It's At" that it was really out of place because it sounded like nothing else in his setlist everything else was twangy and real sounding). Well now he's made it clear which direction he is going in. His final song was the snoozer "Hell of a Night" so he obviously holds it in high regard. My tipping point was hearing pre-recorded fiddle played in the background of the wonderful "Cowboys and Angels" but then mysteriously the fiddle solo was missing. I was only slightly irritated when I saw that Chris Young isn't using a fiddle anymore but now I'm just starting to feel like the artists think we are morons.
Anyway, I'm sure this'll get to the top and we'll see a lead single that has heavy bass, dry lyrics, and no instrumental focus. I had high hope for Dustin after seeing him live the first time but man, I sure am left feeling disappointed, offended, and turned off now. But that's how a lot of artists have me feeling lately so I guess it's just the way to go.

I'm sure he'll come back around to music like "Cowboys and Angels" or at least still record some music like that. It was obvious he needed to balance that kind of sound with being more mainstream to help him keep his momentum up, but I'm pretty sure he can still get hits with songs like his debut single, especially now that he's become more established at radio. "Mind Reader" is a good example of a middle-ground/compromise of sorts imo. I'm interested to see where his career ultimately goes because I love his voice and I've liked a lot of his singles even though I've yet to be persuaded to buy either of his albums. Still, he's a certainly promising star in my eyes.

Glad to see it's Top 20. He posted about a week ago that they filmed the video so I'm assuming we'll get it soon, which should give it even more momentum. I also know he's been writing a bit but I still think we'll get another single off this album.
