Too tired to write a review but wow..... He wasn't kidding when he said "Die a Happy Man" was the countriest song here  I liked "The Day You Stop Lookin' Back", and "Playing With Fire" but the rest?......definitely what you were most likely expecting as far as sound goes... |

"Like It's The Last Time" is pretty good and actually sounds country. That and "T-Shirt" sound like future big hits, and obviously "Die A Happy Man" as well. "Single Girl", "The Day You Stop Lookin' Back", "Playing With Fire" and "Learned It From The Radio" are all country songs too. Honestly, every single except for some of the polarizing Pop leaning songs sound like they could be a huge hit. This is going to be a HUGE album cycle for Rhett, at least with singles success.

Not really as bad as I was expecting, there's a couple I just don't like at all ("South Side" is the only major turnoff for me), but I think that the album still has a lot of Country in it. It's like R&B Country, but it's a weird mix, lyrically it's mostly not Bro- and is Country, then production wise, it has Country elements thrown into a lot of R&B sounds IMO.
I agree this will blow up for him. The singles are kinda hard to pick, but here's my attempt...
1. Crash and Burn
2. Die a Happy Man
3. Playing With Fire (Jordin Sparks)
4. Learned It From the Radio
5. Single Girl
(if they go 6 singles in, which I think is a possibilty)
6. T-Shirt or Tangled Up (depends on what Rhett wants his image to move more towards)

I'll still admit that "Crash and Burn" remains a big guilty pleasure of mine, and I'm ok admitting that lol. I also have to add "Vacation" to that guilty pleasure list..the song is so bad it's good. I'm predicting "Like It's The Last Time," "The Day You Stop Looking Back," and "Single Girl" to be singles.

I actually only liked "Crash and Burn," three of the four instant grat tracks (not "Die a Happy Man"), and the Jordin Sparks duet. The rest of the tracks were just incredibly boring, although I have no doubt this era will be huge for Thomas and could very well move him up to the A-list.
I'd really love for Thomas to beat George Strait for the #1 country album next week, but I'm not about to get my hopes up. I'm predicting Thomas will open with somewhere around 60-80k, while George may open with 100-120k. I'm pretty p'ed that George pulled this album out of nowhere. Any other week Thomas would have had no trouble securing the #1 spot, and George and his label sort of pulled a sneak attack here by announcing George's album just a few days before its release. (I'm not saying I think they did this on purpose to prevent an album that epitomizes the "destruction" of traditional country from debuting at #1, but I'm not saying they didn't either.)

I don't think MCA Nashville set up this release to spite BMLG and Thomas Rhett and ruin his chances of debuting #1. That being said, I really think that George can beat Thomas in album sales next week. In the end though, I really think not debuting at #1 on the albums chart is the end of the world. I mean, it's obvious a big goal, but I wouldn't be that bothered by it personally if I was an artist.
I've just listened to most of this album and as much as I've expressed dislike for "Crash and Burn" and "Vacation"..."South Side", is one of the worst songs I've ever heard in any genre of music recently.

You know I never thought about it that way, but if that's the case then MCA really is doing God's work  I don't see any way that George pulls 100k+ though, only the true A-listers can do that in this sales climate. I think George has a good chance of toppling Thomas, but I think 60k is a more realistic number for them both (and would still be highly impressive for no radio support whatsoever). |

So you like the songs which stretch what any definition of country is? The album certainly will annoy many people but I definitely don't think it epitomizes the destruction of anything but it certainly feels remote from Strait's Cold Beer Conversation success. |

I had been looking forward to this album until he released Vacation on iTunes. I'm not one of those people that complains when something "isn't country," but I feared the worst after hearing Vacation. I figured the whole album would be a weird, something in between genres mix. I got much more excited once I heard (and enjoyed) Die a Happy Man. Now after hearing the full album a couple times through, I'm pleasantly surprised. There's more good than there is bad.

rsmatto, my opinion of a song isn't based on which genre I believe it falls under. I like a small selection of the songs off this album simply because they're good music, regardless of whether they're "country," "pop," "rock," or whatever. I am first and foremost a country music fan, and I will always pay homage to my country roots when discussing my musical and social values, which have come from my background of listening to talented 90s artists Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Reba, etc as a kid, but occasionally I am not opposed to admitting that some really strong, quality material may not be 100% traditional country with a banjo and fiddle. And that's okay. One of the principles I have learned from my country background is diversity, which means accepting a wide range of different musical styles and sounds. To dislike a song because it stretches a definition of "country" seems close-minded and ignorant to me.

The country tracks on Tangled Up aren't bad. "Die A Happy Man", "The Day You Stopped Lookin' Back, and "Like It's The Last Time" (except for the overproduced chorus) are decent songs. The main mishaps here are when Thomas awkwardly tries some new genres. If he sticks to country, he can be a tolerable country star. 2.0/5.0

So far, the album still needs to grow a bit more on me, cause at this time, only Crash And Burn is the HUGE MONSTER track in the album. That said, I only would rank 3 songs in the not good side: South Side, Vacation and Single Girl. This last one basically cause I just can't remember what it sounds like after it finishes every time. Hopefully Thomas manages to beat George I have liked some George songs through the years, but ultimately, to me, he seems to re-write the same song over and over and just changes the title. Let's see what happens. |

HDD is projecting this to sell 72-77k (including streaming, which now counts towards an album's position on the Billbord albums chart), while George is projecting 78-82k. So the battle for #1 country album may be pretty close. Thomas does have a few advantages over George here, besides the fact that Borchetta's historically been pretty good at getting albums to sell. Thomas' album position is way more likely to get boosted by individual track sales and streaming, plus George's album is only available through iTunes and Walmart, while Tangled Up is available through all vendors. I'm not saying I expect Thomas to beat George but right now it looks like he's at least got a chance.
It looks like Fetty Wap will lead the all-genre chart next week, though, since his album is getting a major boost from streaming.

So based on HDD's early projections, Tangled Up would come in at #3 on the country albums chart behind both George Strait's Cold Beer Conversation and Don Henley's Cass County, which are projected to move 75-80k and 70-75k respectively in pure album sales. But with Tangled Up projected to sell 65-70k in pure albums, it's possible the forecasts for the three albums will converge as more information becomes available about their respective weekend sales. |

I would love to see George Strait get his 26th #1 country album. He missed out last time when his Live From AT&T Stadium CD debuted at #2 behind Tim McGraw's Sundown Heaven Town CD. Eventually, Strait outsold McGraw with that one.
