So, Chris Stapleton co-wrote "South Side"...hmm... You can also hear him on background vocals on the song. I just find the spilt between that song and "Crash and Burn" vs the Traveller album fascinating.

Chris wants to identify as a country artist (at least that's my perception) and that's why he made country songs for his album. Should he be interested in making pop- or funk-sounding songs, that may not exactly jive with the type of artist he is. So instead of putting them on his own record, he will write those type of songs for a pop and/or funk artist who is more inclined to put those songs on their record.

I suppose it's more so the idea that artists like Stapleton are "above" this kind of material (this is me inferring and not taking direct comments) and that he has had a hand in this sort of R&B Country movement and he is a bedrock of the argument people have against the success of this music. Not taking a side, just find the duality of his role in Country music to be fascinating in that regard.

Amen to this. I was actually coming here this morning to post something on Mr. Rhett. I'll post it in the Unpopular Opinion section

Wow... such a juvenile and childish non professional review. We have several members here who would rip Thomas Rhett a new one with intelligence and pointing out flaws without sounding immature. I am used to the constant attacks on T Rhett, I don't mind. But a review like that? The guy sounds so hurt that he is spilling all crap he could think of. I am also tired of this typical "He is destroying country music!" I admit the album is not that country, it barely is, but it seems to be marketed towards the country genre, so deal with that. Hate it, but be smart about it, don't resort to name calling to defend what you consider the ideal country music.

^This. It's hard to take these bloggers seriously when they sound so juvenile. It seems like this is all just a joke to them, and sometimes I have to wonder if bloggers like the "Saving Country Music" guy are really just trolling everyone. Thomas will likely debut at #3 on the country albums chart and #5 all-genre, even though he'll sell 25-30k more than Brett Eldredge did two weeks ago with his album, which debuted at #1 country and #3 all-genre. Thomas just ran into bad timing. He's a sophomore artist competing with two country music legends, even if Rhett appeals to pop music as well as country music fans. It'd be unrealistic to expect him to hold up against George. But as sabre14 noted, people tend not to care about album chart positions like they do airplay chart positions. Units are all that really matter. Now if only the airplay charts could be talked about in the same way. It'd be great if people talked about Keith Urban's record-breaking "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16" as "being heard by 51 million people" last week instead of "peaking at #2."

Saying "Die A Happy Man" was a R&B song made the whole review lose any credibility it had. The reviewer clearly has no idea about outside genres, so them labeling something they determine to "not be country" loses any merit.

Yes, that review is much more professional. They didn't call Thomas any names, they just said his album "shouldn't be music" and "would make a deaf person cringe." That's exactly what I expect from a professional critic. But that's fine if Country Perspective just wants to preach to its own choir. I know they're never going to sway anyone "in the middle" to their side that way, which I thought was the whole point of having a blog and providing commentary on important "issues." Not to mention the rating hardly matches the commentary. The guy gave the album a "0/10" even though he said he actually liked one of the songs. And lol at the tags added to the article, especially "war." I'm honestly not bothered by this site. I find their content kind of humorous...I guess I'd describe it as "cute."

You may agree with their opinion, but there's no science used in that review to prove Tangled Up deserves a 0/10 score. They are entitled to think that and so are you, but it doesn't mean its a fact, and the same goes for the other way around.

At least Chris Stapleton gives the scrappy songs to Thomas, and keeps the good stuff for himself.

I gave it a 1/5 because of "Die A Happy Man" and "The Day You Stop Lookin' Back", but for me, this was just a mess, country or not country.

Chris Stapleton is trying to make a living for his family. As a songwriter, one hit song is worth more than 10 "good" songs. His job as a songwriter is to write enough hits to keep his publishing deal. As an Artist he does what he wants to do and doesn't need a hit song.
As for this Album, I like it pretty well. I don't think it's on the same level as Sam Hunt's but this will definitely keep Thomas Rhett relevant.

Question What did you think of the album as a whole just curious. I don't think its a very cohesive album, as many of the songs sound drastically different from each other, and I think that causes an issue when trying to listen to the album as a whole. I think its a good collection of potential singles though, as a lot of songs sound like potential big hits. I personally am not a fan of "Anthem", "South Side", "Tangled Up" or "I Feel Good". I found them all to be pretty awkward, and honestly, if I'm looking for those type of songs, I'd rather listen to artists who specialize in that type of music. I was pleasantly surprised though by the amount of country sounding songs that appear on here. After reading all the descriptions, I was expecting every song to sound eccentric, but there's quite a few good sounding country songs on here. They may have some influences from other genres, but I feel they fit the genre pretty well. "Die A Happy Man", "T-Shirt", "Learned It From The Radio", "The Day You Stop Looking Back" and "Playing With Fire" all stay pretty close to the contemporary sound IMO. I was always a fan of "Crash And Burn", and I have to admit that "Vacation" is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I wish there was a little less production in some parts ("T-Shirt" in particular), but grading out i'd give the album a 6/10, maybe 5.5/10 because a couple of the songs weren't very good at all.

lmfao at the first reviews impression that he made the album because he "hates country music so much"
like how over the top can you get

I have to say I'm getting "Come Wake Me Up" vibes from "Playing with Fire." The lyrics and themes of the two have similarities, but also the melodies kind of strike me as similar, which is a great thing since CWMU is one of my absolute favorite Rascal Flatts songs. And when Jordin Sparks comes in on the second verse, she really sounds like Jill Johnson on the duet version of CWMU to me.

I won a digital download of the album from WATZ. I liked "Crash and Burn" a lot (so sue me), so I'm curious to see what else is on it.

Excellent total, even if he didn't get the #1 slot. Haven't heard the album in full yet, but have a feeling this could be a huge era for him, even thought I'm not exactly his biggest fan.

It's not completely on-topic, but it's Thomas himself, and a record relating to his album. So cool! He broke a record of the most people playing Twister, and the thanked people or should I say, the recipents? were Thomas and his label.

Has this ever happened where the album reaches #1 on the Hot 200 but fails to reach #1 on the country album chart?

For me this is either really good, or really out there.
I love Die A Happy Man and Playing With Fire, but Vacation and I Feel Good are horrendous at best.
