That's a cute opening, considering the state of the industry and R&B sales.

Even though Thank You is as hookless and only slightly less meandering than Set Me Free, I like the production a lot.

Now that I have had some more time with the album, I feel like the lack of strong melodies and hooks is what's really getting to me. Mary never really suffered from that before. The production is really strong overall though and even inspired at times so I feel like that will keep me coming back to the album.

Those sales are great, imo. It is just what I expected after the wait with "Thick of It" success because I honestly felt she would have done low 100K if she would have stick with the Valentine's Day release date or late December. However, she still have the highest sales for R&B artist so far in a while now.

60k is significantly high nowadays when you only receive support from UAC radios. Mary has already arrived at the point where she sells album by her name not by the success of single...

Yeah, those numbers are what I expected. I have to say, I'm disappointed by her promo this go around. Mary used to be EVERYWHERE when she launched an album. But I guess 25 years in, that game has ran it's course.
I can't handle the one-two-three punch of "Indestructible," "Thank You," and "Survivor" right now. She's serving these laid back empowerment anthems.

These are standard numbers that R&B artists are pulling these days so i dunno why people are disappointed. At least she is bouncing back from her previous two albums.

I think those numbers are great too. She's barely done any visible promo and only has the support of UrbanAC. Maybe their plan is to have her name + publicity of the divorce sell the album the opening week and then space out her appearances to keep it afloat. That would be best.

My recent random thoughts and feelings about Mary:
Not making this any kind of stan war (because IDGAF) but I read an article today about Mary and this album where they compared her to Mariah. The comparison was basically that in this climate, Mary is the cool, relevant aunt, and Mariah is the aunt that tries too hard to be youthful and cool. I love them both, but that is a fair comparison.
At any rate, what I love the most about Mary is her natural way to stay tapped into the culture. She's a legend with a career that spans over half of her lifetime, yet she proudly exclaims that her go-to R&B acts are blasts from the past, but her favorite song of this past year is "Bad and Bougie."
She's literally the only female R&B artist that came out in the early 90s who is still around and relevant today. All of her peers who were outperforming her are either reality show stars, out of touch has-beens, or dead. And she's been herself the entire time.
Growing up, I remember hearing artists like Patti Labelle having new music being played on the same radio stations as Tupac. There was no ageism. Good music was good music. I love that Mary has been able to sustain herself long enough to be that type of artist for this generation.

I think the real issue is Mary doesn't want to continuously doing interviews talking about her disappointments. She keeps referencing her recent public moments as negative and embarrassing...including her divorce. She actually has been on the move since she dropped Thick Of It. She did the tour with Maxwell. Did press. And then went back on the grind headlining the Tom Joyner cruise, and touring Japan, Australia, and other international venues. All this while still working on an album and dealing with a divorce.

I love that Mary has been able to sustain herself long enough to be that type of artist for this generation. I agree with basically everything here, but also would add that while being herself the entire time, Mary has been successfully overcoming her career lows by redefining herself: from Mary to No More Drama; then from Love & Life to The Breakthrough and Growing Pains, her biggest era so far. And in this sense she's quite similar to Mariah ( Butterfly; Emancipation of Mimi and E=MC2). They are both still relevant (I'm not too negative about Mariah's career because every time she releases something, people will still get curious and check out). They're rare because few people could have the second and even third life that they have as artists. The problem is will there be a fourth one for them? (Or do they really need/are motivated enough to do that)

Her VH1 documentary about the making of the album was nice. Even though they bleeped it and cut away from her face so her lips couldn't be read, I wasn't expecting her to name-drop Becky! http://instagram.com/p/BTagJ9YFyX6

I'm not seeing how their recent career trajectories have been that far off from one another. They basically do the same kind of music and have the same Rap collabos. Why is Mary cool for name dropping Migos while listening to the oldies when Mariah does the same thing? She was out there singing along to The Weeknd and caught on tape. So what? Is it just the clothing

This album actually reminds me of Mariah's last. Breakup album, heavily midtempo R&B, live instruments, influence from all stages of their careers, etc.
