Time has shown us again and again that it is more difficult for older artists to continue scoring hits on pop radio, however not impossible. Just curious, Although it's been awhile for some of these artists, do you realistically see any of these following older acts scoring at least one more decent-sized Chr/Pop hit?
Madonna Janet Jackson Mariah Carey Celine Dion Kylie Minogue Jennifer Lopez Prince Cher Michael Jackson (posthumous) Whitney Houston (posthumous) Shania Twain Mary J Blige Toni Braxton R Kelly Sheryl Crow

I could see Jennifer Lopez getting it with a feature, but no for everyone else...

I think if anyone on this list can pull it off, It'd be J-lo, Madonna, or Mariah.
Madonna...well, because she's Madonna. Never write her off.
Jennifer is still very youthful and gorgeous. I can see her having another "On The Floor" moment or being a feature.
Mariah just had a top 15 CHR hit 2 years ago with #Beautiful and seems to be the queen of comebacks..even if just for one hit. Emancipation and Touch My Body were huge, but i rememember people writing her off after follow up singles failed...then she had a hit with "Obsessed". Then again following singles failed..and she had another (though smaller) hit with #Beautiful. I think the stars can align once more for her.
To a much lesser extent, Janet...but it would have to be the right type of song with the right type of promotion.

I think any one of them really could because anything can happen. We cannot write any one of them off just yet. Remember when some thought Mariah would never ever be successful again after Glitter and Charmbracelet, but she kept at it and then "We Belong Together" became one of the biggest hits of her career. Or when Madonna had flopped with American Life, she came back with "Hung Up" and that was one of the biggest international hits of her career.
We never thought that Shaggy would ever chart on CHR/Pop again, but then "Habibi (I Need Your Love)" came out and he did.

Kylie has been pretty irrelevant in the US for over a decade, no reason for her to even be on this list.
Madonna, Mariah or/and J. Lo. And you never know what happens with Michael Jackson next.

Of those listed only Mariah & Madonna (and that's with a feature).

None of them. They're all done on CHR.
While not on pop, I can see these artists having hits on other radio formats:
Janet Jackson (Urban AC) Cher (AC) Mary J Blige (Urban AC) Toni Braxton (Urban AC) R. Kelly (Urban AC)

A number of them could, but I'd go with J.Lo and Mariah. With the right promo, a number of recent Mariah songs could have been huge, so she's still putting out contemporary hit-worthy music. J.Lo also seems to keep up with the times, and has had a number of moderate hits recently, she could do it too. The others I don't see doing much, they just haven't been keeping up as well, imo.

Define "hit". Top 40? A number of them. Top 10? None of them.

Interesting topic! The oldest person in this list by far is CHER who will be turning 70 her next birthday. Cher began recording in 1963 and first hit the Billboard Bubbling Under Chart in 1964. Last year Cher did very well on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart with I Hope You Find It. The AC chart is where nearly ALL of these older artists should be able to chart but since that chart is now only 30 entries long (instead of 40 or 50 entries as it had been not that long ago) and because those 30 slots are usually mimicking the top part of the Hot 100 it is harder for older artists to even enter the AC chart. Cher's I Hope You Find It was in the Media Base and other AC charts for 2-3 months between #31-50 before finally cracking into the Billboard AC Chart where it lingered for 20 weeks. That might not sound like much but it was a huge thing since Cher did little promo and her record label did NADA to help it. Cher also made the Billboard Bubbling Under chart with Woman's World and while that was far from a hit, just being able to hit the Bubbling Under chart as a solo artist as HER AGE was amazing!
As far as a mainstream hit on the Billboard Hot 100, the only 2 I could see pulling it off with the right song is Janet or Michael Jackson. ANY of the others could do it if they FEAT. someone HOT or if it was a duet or some type of collaboration. I mean if a hot artist like Taylor Swift or The Weeknd or Drake or Katy Perry FEAT any of these older artists or if any collaboration took place any of them could have a hit but as solos I don't think so. The easiest chart for any of them to chart on and even get to #1 is the Billboard Dance Club Play Chart. Most of the artists on this list could easily hit #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Play chart but mainstream radio is so ageist and sexist so outside of the right song by maybe Michael or Janet and even that's a reach, I doubt the others can do it SOLO.
I wish it were not like this since I really like everyone on this list.
The artists on this list who will likely TRY to have a Hot 100 hit by guesting on someone else's song or getting whoever is hot at the moment to be featured on their track are Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey. I think those 3 really will do what it takes and get younger artists to get them into the Hot 100.

Unless the climate of Top 40 changes it has really become impossible for a veteran act over 45 unless it is a feature to get a hit. It use to happen but radio has become quite youth obsessed.
