Hey, so I'm currently working on a 7 page paper for my economics class. The topic can be whatever we want, so long as it's economics related. I was hoping to tie it in with the country music industry. Does anyone have any good suggestions for topics? Any help is appreciated. I have it narrowed it down to a few topics but any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
So far I have
- How Gary Overton's earlier comments on this year of how "if you're not on country radio you don't exist" are invalid.
- The discrepancy (for lack of a better term) between digital sales and what gets to No. 1 (for example, "Girl Crush" only made it to #3 despite being arguably the biggest hit of the year while stuff like "Kiss You In The Morning" gets to #1 despite horrible sales).
- How the live show is the biggest source of revenue for artists.

I'd say those are all good ideas. Another point of discussion could be how the nature of technology is rapidly changing how music is heard, distributed, paid for, and consumed, as things like Spotify and Youtube that didn't even exist a decade ago are now wildly popular. And while this probably doesn't do you much good if your paper is due soon, How Music Got Free and The Song Machine are two excellent, recent books on this subject that could give you some info and ideas, although they're not about the country music industry specifically. I wish I could offer something more substantive, but I got nothin' since I don't know a whole lot about the inner workings of the music industry myself. Good luck. |

Important question:
What exactly is causing the decline of album sales? Is it technology, or is the catering to a younger demographic? Or something else? Thanks

I'd say it's the availability of singles. When I used to want a CD, I'd run down to Strawberrys and buy it. I guess they sold those CDs with "singles" and other little extras but why not just buy the whole album. Why would I do that now when I can buy the 2 songs I actually like from the album for a little over $2 in the comfort of my home?
Also, as the genre draws in more pop-style fans (which as we are starting to see, will ultimately cause more harm than good to the success of these artists), they have shorter attention spans. Historically, country fans tend to be artist-loyal, while pop fans historically follow trends. I love Brad Paisley and Luke Bryan so chances are I'm going to continue buying their albums for years to come. Someone trickling in from pop is going to buy "Take Your Time" and then "Kick the Dust Up" and then "Die a Happy Man" and then whatever the hell is the next flavor of the week. No loyalty most likely means no album sales (from that demographic, anyway).
That's just my view on it.
