So 9 #1's for the year then. Guess that's what Drake gets for going the exclusive route. Don't expect RiRi to be topping any charts this era either if she keeps doing that.

Oof. Makes that 'thank you for the #1 even if I don't get #1' note pretty awkward now. Why in the world did Drake not upload the MV on YouTube? Pretty sure he has some kind of exclusivity deal with Apple, and that the video will be on Youtube later (the Energy video also premiered on Apple music before he posted it on his Vevo account). Nothing wrong with that, he just should have released the video sooner so that when he finally did add it to Vevo he could have gotten some YT streaming. I find it bologna that Apple videos don't count toward streaming, though. Of course, there was no way for anyone to know that Hurricane Adele was about to make its way across the Atlantic so quickly...

I was rooting for "Hotline Bling" to be number-one this week, but I knew it wasn't going to happen when the video wasn't posted to Vevo.

Apple Music crippled (...I'm going to hell aren't I) his chances, sorry to say. I thought XXX. calling Drake stupid was a bit much but...nah he's right. It's not like Drake is just happy to have another big hit; we know he wants a #1, so he shouldn't have waited so late on the video. Now, Hello's airplay is going to catch up with its sales too fast to slip before the end of the year, probably. Not to mention Drake would have been cutting it close anyway with Sorry and Focus coming and with the assumption that The Hills would decrease in points in time for HB to take the #1. That clearly didn't happen.

How did Hello not debut? That's strange to me. Didn't it have a day or two of sales?

It did have three (?) days of radio, though, as that tracking week starts on Monday (or Sunday, I'm not sure if the Sunday update is counted for the week that the Saturday is or not)

It's not Billboard's fault, because Apple Music won't release their numbers, but it sucks knowing that Hotline Bling was easily the #1 song this week and yet it's at #2 on the Hot 100.

Lmao at all the Hotline Bling avatars in a row. Looks like Drake isn't the only one who really wanted that #1. Unless Focus can debut at #1, it looks like Hello will be #1 for the rest of the year.

Can you guys explain to me why video streams aren't counted from streaming services? Not sure what the deal is with Tidal, but from renfield75's post above, it looks like Apple Music won't release their numbers. That is so strange to me though, since Apple audio streams are counted IIRC. If you can release one why not the other?

Don't know enough about the actual formula or this threads perception of the actual formula on the whole Hotline Bling issue, but I do have this opinion:
I get that Billboard has a formula and they follow it to the letter but,
If the difference in #1 was truly the Apple Music streams, and they know that, they could make a one time adjustment (based on educated guesses as to what those streams might be) and declare the #1 based on data and educated adjustments.
To me the Hot 100's objective is to declare the most popular song of the week in the country. Not go, oops, not all the numbers are in so we have to go with the formula even though we know that if all the data were in would give a different answer.
So if they knew that, I think Billboard made the wrong decision. If they were unclear, or it was possible that even with the extra streams, The Hills was still #1, then I think Billboard made the correct decision.
In the end, it should be about what is the most popular, not about the mechanical formula. Sometimes, human involvement is necessary, if it were truly that obvious.

I just wrote this whole thing about this same topic. i wasn't gonna post it, but since you did.... lol the Apple streams/Drake situation does raise another * on reality, really. It clearly would have been #1 had the streams that did indeed occur in the tracking week had been counted... so, like when the Hot 100 policy used to require a commercial single to chart, there are several * by songs like Don't Speak that didn't do that well or chart at all... when they would have been #1 without question. i just think of radio audience and how it's estimated and not *actual*... so why can't the same be done for apple streaming based on estimates, rather than exclude ALL those points? i know it's not a great solution, but it just sucks. i'm sure one day apple will start releasing these streaming figures, rendering this era right now inaccurate. just ranting. i guess every era in music history has its own glitches and situations that cause them to be less than accurate chart positions, so why should this era be any different.

i guess it comes down to the fact that either way, it would be and asterisk situation in chart history. *Based on streaming estimates... or *Excluded because apple streaming data was unavailable.
But i do think its knowingly disregarding reality and that's messed up on some level.
Do hold Billboard or apple responsible? It's messy and debatable.

I put conditions on all of that though.
No one here knows the actual formula. No one here knows the streaming numbers. Billboard knows their formula. Billboard could probably figure out the streaming within a reasonable approximation. If there is room for doubt, I think they made the right call.

what I don't get is that I watched the video on a website with the embedded widget for apple music. i guess i figured that since it's a subscription service, you'd have to subscribe to view/listen to their content. but that's clearly not the case... so i really don't get how it's structured and/or why.
it seems like Apple doesn't release these figures because they don't want to appear super small compared to the big guys.

10/26/15 - Billboard subjectively decides that estimated Apple Music video streams will count for "Hotline Bling" despite them not being reported. "Hotline Bling" takes the #1 spot.
11/2/15 - Billboard subjectively decides that estimated Vine video streams will count for "Hit The Quan" despite them not being reported. "Hit The Quan" blocks "Hello" from #1 as a result.
Bias is real right now. And I'm #TeamTurnover so I wanted HB at #1, but Billboard essentially making up Apple Music numbers (if we don't know estimates, there's no reason that Billboard would know) for it to count sets way too dangerous of a precedent. Plus we're all ignoring the fact that Billboard would also have to make estimates for the streams of every single video on Apple Music, which is clearly logistically impossible.
