I'm a total noob, but seeing as the new Adele song was just released today and the Hot 100 charts are every Mon/Tues, would it be too late to make a top 10 debut or is it still entirely possible? I wouldn't put it past it given how big of a deal that release is.

The sales/streaming tracking week starting today and ending Thursday corresponds to the 11/14 chart, so it'll most likely debut then. But because the airplay tracking week (Monday-Sunday) is out of whack with sales/streaming, Adele will actually get three days' worth of Hot 100 points from airplay for the 11/7 chart, but we'll have to see whether that's enough to debut on the Hot 100. (I think she'll probably bubble under.)

I know digital track sales have declined in recent years... but I think Adele will far exceed 300k first week. The hype, the broadness of her audience... it's unparalleled right now. Maybe it'll be stifled by a pre-order instant gratification situation with the album going up for pre-orders tomorrow... but that would be the only reason it doesn't do HUGE numbers, imo. But instant grats are still counted as single sales and not subtracted until the album release, so this shouldn't be a problem for her, should it? That policy changed last year. Effective Friday, October 10th, 2014, iTunes sales reported to Nielsen SoundScan will no longer include instant gratification tracks delivered prior to the release of an album when the consumer purchases the entire album. The purchase of the album, as an individual transaction, will be counted when the complete project has been delivered upon album release. Individual tracks purchases will still be counted at the time of purchase and returned at the time the consumer decides to “Complete My Album”.www.thatericalper.com/2014/09/18/itunes-reporting-methodology-change-impacting-nielsen-soundscan-u-s-canada/

Why??? Why does Adele have to have such instant grat thingy going on? If there's no pre-order thwart then this song is almost hopeful to break Flo Rida's record.. not impossible to get 700k digital first week..

At the end of the day, it's about album sales for both the artists and their labels. Hit singles are obviously a goal as well - who doesn't want a #1 song? But ultimately it's the album sales that trump everything.

Adele expected to sell 700,000 downloads in the first week. Is this true?

Adele expected to sell 700,000 downloads in the first week. Is this true? I can't find any articles stating a 700k debut in the USA.

it's going to be a very speculative, rumor-filled, random numbers out of the woodwork kind of week, folks. don't believe a lick of it until Billboard or HitsDD report on it.

Refresh my memory: when was the last time #5 on iTunes is below 0.100000000? (Even Shake It Off at most made the #11 below 0.10...)

I don't even think its a question of "if"... i think she's got #1 in the bag. It's easy to say that but unless she keeps this lead for a majority of the week, it's not a given, especially with The Hills and Hotline Bling being so big right now. But I'm rooting for Adele, as most of us are!

Can we just say that ADELE is the true iTunes queen? She's Justin Beiber at less than 30%, thats pretty fantastic. But um where did 700k come from?

Not to sound whatever, but I'm a chart nerd who tracks weekly Hot 100 point totals. I have many points of reference. There's no way Hotline Bling will have more points than Adele in the tracking week that started today. Not with the massive multi-format airplay it's going to have, massive sales... and then add in streaming for good measure. Slam dunk.

Because, as mentioned, Adele's single is tied to the album pre-order, it will be tough to gauge what its actual reported sales tally will be, unless a media outlet posts an actual projection, excluding instant grats.

I thought iTunes stopped showing the effect of instant grats on the pop bars, only sales from purchasing just the song affects the pop bars? I could be wrong, or it could just be a rumor, I'm not sure.
